Luxury meets art, sustainability and innovation! That’s what describes the brand new resort Patina Maldives which only opened in June 2021. The resort has the most incredible water villas and is part of the so called Fari Islands, which includes the Ritz-Carlton Maldives and soon the Capella Maldives! Read in this Hotel Review what makes the Patina Maldives to one of the most exclusive resorts!
LOCATION & TRANSFER
Located in the North Male atoll the Patina Maldives is just a 35-40 mins speed boat ride away from the International airport Velana. But at the same time the resort has a very quiet location which gives you the feeling of being hours and hours away from the next civilization which is perfect to relax! What we love about resorts which are not that far away from the airport is that you don’t have to check in and wait for another sea plane transfer after the long international flight. Instead we got directly picked up after immigration and escorted to the private Fari Islands boat.
As already mentioned above the Patina is part of “Fari Islands” which is a collection of different high end luxury resorts which are connected by boat. But read more about this unique concept below.
Before I will tell you more about the unique new resort let me introduce you to the incredible villas at the Patina. No matter if they are located at the beach or over the water – they will definitely leave you speechless with their minimal but yet elegant and luxurious design…
Sunset Water Pool Villa
Designed to perfection with natural materials, an eco friendly concept and lots of space and privacy the water villas seem to float over the lagoon. Thanks to the panoramic floor-to-ceiling window facade they become one with the ocean. Especially during sunset the atmosphere is absolutely breathtaking!
The Interior of the Villa is a one room concept which is your working, living and sleeping area all at once. The interior is rustic and minimalistic with the finest quality material and lots of luxurious details. A sliding door leads to the bathroom which is just as modern and beautiful as the rest of your villa.
The floor-to-ceiling windows can be opened completely to connect the inside of the villa with your private terrace. The outdoor area was actually my favorite part thanks to the big pool over the lagoon and a free standing bathtub with ocean view! Details like a hammock and relaxing sun beds make it to the perfect place to relax all day long. I loved the fact that half of the terrace is roofed so you can still sit outside during a short tropical rain shower or hide from the strong midday sun.
The Patina offers a wide variety of room categories. Such as multi bedroom villas for bigger groups or families or studios in the lush heart of the island. But no matter the category – all of them have the same interior design and offer a maximum of luxury, sustainability and relaxation.
The Concept of the Patina Maldives
As a new concept in the Maldives, Fari Islands connects three different luxury resorts: The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, the soon opening Capella and of course the Patina with the Fari Marina Village. The idea is that once inter-island traveling will be easier again, guests from all three resort can get together and socialize at Fari Marina village and use the different restaurants and facilities. A shuttle boat will connect the different islands as soon as the Covid regulations are lifted.
Fari Marina Village includes not only different bars and restaurants but also shops, the water sports center, a beach club with pool and the key art piece “Skyspace”.
What makes the Patina special is that you will find art pieces all around the resort. From the villas to the spa area and multiple art installation on the island. The key art piece is called “Skyspace” by the renowned Californian artist James Turrell. You can step into it to become one with the installation and feel the deep connection with art and the space. In the center of the art piece is a window which looks like a canvas and is facing the sky. So each time you come to it, the “Skyspace” will have a completely different mood depending on the weather and the time of the day.
The Patina is trying to only have a positive impact on nature and people. All planted trees are rescued from other islands where they needed to be removed – you will even find a huge banyan tree at the beach club pool which got saved from a construction site. All buildings are made of natural and renewable materials, the power is harvested from the sun and the drinking water preserved and filtered on the island itself. Many ingredients at the restaurants – especially the vegan signature restaurant Roots – come straight from the organic garden on the island and you won’t find any single use plastic.
Another amazing fact is that children get in contact with the nature at the kids club and can even participate at a free scuba diving session to explore the reef. Even though the Fari Islands are manmade you can still find a great reef right in front of the sunset water villas which will be protected at all costs!
Beside art and nature, well-being is a big part of the hotel concept. The Spa of the Patina connects all these aspects. It’s a huge area and as soon as you step into it you will instantly feel very calm. The treatment rooms are located in private suites surrounded by nature and the relaxing area is designed like a minimalist zen garden. A highlight are the innovative treatment methods like flotation or red-light therapy or the romantic couple hammam beds.
The Pool & Beach
Beside the relaxing Beach Club Pool, you can find an even bigger one at the main area. This is where most of the restaurants, the bar and the lobby are located as well. Nestled at a long Beach stripe with countless palm trees the pool overlooks the turquoise lagoon with several cabanas, sun beds and hanging chairs. As typical for the Maldives you will find a sandy beach all around the island to let you easily find a private space to enjoy the sunshine and the warm water of the Indian Ocean.
Breakfast & Restaurants
Just like the whole resort, the restaurants of the Patina are innovative and have a very high standard. Thanks to the Fari Island concept you will find a wide variety of cuisines and restaurants to choose from during your stay. For the near future they are even planning to open food trucks at the Fari Marina Village for a quick snack.
These have been our favorite restaurant:
The Signature Restaurant of the Patina is called Roots and has a frequently changing and completely plant-based menu! Patrick and I both eat meat but love to try something new. That’s why we have been very excited to try it! And let me tell you that it didn’t disappoint us at all! In fact it has been our favorite and most tasteful dinner during our stay – I highly recommend you to give it a try!
The Fari Beach Club
What is the ideal place to relax during the day turns into a great location to socialize and dine in the evening. The Fari Beach Club serves delicate tapas and extraordinary cocktails in a very laid-back atmosphere. You can even enjoy a multi coursed menu created by the Michelin starred chef Nick Bril.
I’m usually not the biggest breakfast person, but here at the Patina I enjoyed every minute of it! They have one of the best buffets and à la carte options I ever experienced at a hotel. Even though the buffet is already lavish with countless homemade and fresh options they have an additional menu to order hot and cold dishes, fresh juices and much more! We turned our breakfast more into a brunch each morning to enjoy it to the fullest! Make sure to try their homemade pastries and tartlets during your stay and my absolute favorite: The dragon fruit bowl!
The Patina is a completely new brand and their first resort here in the Maldives sets a new standards for ultra luxury resorts in combination with sustainability. The atmosphere is very exclusive but at the same time laid-back and guests can always choose between socializing and meeting same minded-people or to hide away in their private sanctuary villas and enjoy nothing but privacy and nature. Thanks to the different room categories it’s the ideal resort for couples but also families or friends.
