one day at the Yellowstone national park in Wyoming - wildlife watching bisons

Yellowstone was established in 1872, making it the oldest national park in the world – and arguably the best-known park in the USA. It forms part of the Rocky Mountains and lies at an average altitude of around 2,400 metres above sea level. Its landscape is characterised by snow-capped peaks, beautiful lakes and rivers, wide valleys, rolling wooded hills and breathtaking canyons. It is also home to more than half of the world’s hot springs, and numerous wild animals have made their home here.

Although Yellowstone National Park is one of the largest in North America, covering an area of just under 9,000 square kilometres, it is still possible to explore its top highlights in a single day. In this post, I’ll share my personal tips for an unforgettable day in Yellowstone National Park.

☀️ When is the best time to visit Yellowstone National Park for a day trip?

Late May to September is generally the best time to visit Yellowstone National Park. However, as the peak season is in summer, it gets very busy during this period, with heavy traffic and occasional traffic jams.

That’s why I’d recommend September – it offers a good combination of fewer visitors, pleasant temperatures, wildlife and the first signs of autumn colours.

In the off-season, there are significantly fewer visitors, but depending on the weather, roads and facilities may still be closed or may already have closed. In winter, Yellowstone National Park is of course also very beautiful, but due to the weather conditions, many roads are closed to ordinary vehicles.

🌋 Yellowstone and its geology

Yellowstone lies on an active volcanic system and is what is known as a supervolcano. A large part of the park lies within the Yellowstone Caldera. The last major caldera eruption took place around 631,000 years ago. At present, the Yellowstone volcano only causes small earthquakes on a regular basis. Nevertheless, the crater continues to rise and fall by a few centimetres. The constant volcanic and geothermal activity gives rise to the characteristic geysers, hot springs and mud pots – for many, the highlight of Yellowstone National Park.

💦 West Thumb Geyser Basin

A 45-minute drive takes you from the East Entrance to Yellowstone Lake – the largest mountain lake in North America. Here volcanic activity is clearly evident, as the lake bed has risen by around 2.5 centimetres per year in recent years! The vast expanse of water is fringed by many smaller lakes and ponds. Together, they form a diverse habitat for numerous living creatures.

Right on the western shore of Yellowstone Lake lies the West Thumb Geyser Basin, a fascinating landscape of deep-blue, hot thermal springs. I found the combination of the geysers and the panoramic view of the lake particularly beautiful. It looks simply fantastic when the steam rises from the bubbling springs and spreads out over the lake.

Explore the basin on the West Thumb Geyser Basin Trail – a short boardwalk loop approximately 1 km / 0.6 miles long. The West Thumb Geyser Basin should definitely be on your list for a day trip through Yellowstone National Park.

💨 Old Faithful

The Old Faithful region is home to a particularly large number of geysers. Glacial moraines from the last Ice Age created cavities beneath the geyser basin – reservoirs for water. It is only because of these that geysers are possible at all. The surrounding hills consist of lava rock that is around two and a half million years old.

The park’s most famous attraction is Old Faithful, with its reliable eruptions, during which it ejects between 14,000 and 32,000 litres of water each time. It was first described in 1870. Today we know that there were also long periods during which it was inactive.

Old Faithful erupts approximately every 60-110 minutes, usually about every 90 minutes. The next expected eruption is always displayed at the Old Faithful Visitor Education Centre – a very reliable prediction with no more than +/- 10 minutes.

My tip, based on personal experience: most people wait right in the official viewing area. But if there’s still time before the next eruption, I recommend walking further along the boardwalks. We watched the eruption from the opposite side – with fewer people and a much better view! For me, Old Faithful is definitely a Yellowstone must-see!

Next, I suggest you explore the Upper Geyser Basin, an area boasting the world’s highest concentration of geothermal springs! It lies along the Firehole River and feeds it with boiling-hot water. As a result, the river’s water temperature rises by up to 30 degrees Celsius throughout the area! Bison, incidentally, know where the warm spots are and keep returning to them.

🌈 Grand Prismatic Spring

In the Midway Geyser Basin, you’ll find the Grand Prismatic Spring – the largest hot spring in Yellowstone and, for me, the most colourful spring in the entire national park. The colours shine with incredible intensity, especially during a sunny day – which is why this is a top Yellowstone highlight!

On the Midway Geyser Basin Boardwalk, which is around 1.3 km / 0.8 miles long, you’ll get a close-up view of the Grand Prismatic Spring as well as the Excelsior Geyser Crater.

My tip: for a unique view from above of this colourful natural spectacle, take the Grand Prismatic Overlook Trail – a short but relatively steep path that leads straight to a viewpoint.

🏞️ Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

Even if you’re only planning to explore Yellowstone National Park in a single day, you absolutely can’t miss the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone! This breathtaking canyon, with its steep cliffs glowing in shades ranging from intense yellow to red, is another of the park’s highlights alongside the geysers.

Of course, there are also various lookouts here from which you can enjoy fantastic views. For me, these three viewpoints are the top must-sees:

Artist Point → from here you get the famous view of the Lower Falls

Lookout Point → also a great spot for a view of the Lower Falls

Brink of Upper Falls → here you look directly down onto the Upper Falls

Incidentally, at 94 m / 308 ft high, the Lower Falls are the highest waterfalls in the national park – almost twice as high as Niagara Falls.

Here’s another little tip from me: if you only have one day in Yellowstone National Park, you don’t necessarily need to visit every viewpoint. It’s better to spend more time at one or two of them to really let those unforgettable moments sink in.

🦬 Wildlife sightings in Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park provides an ideal home for numerous animal species – including large wildlife such as bison, wapiti, bears and wolves. Bison are a particularly distinctive feature of the classic landscape, especially in the valleys. The large herds of these grazing animals ensure that the grasslands remain open and are not overtaken by the forest.

But be careful: even though these fluffy giants look very relaxed, they can run extremely fast and attack with their horns if they feel threatened. Male bison in particular often defend their territory. The rangers in the national park therefore recommend keeping a distance of at least 25 metres – or you can watch the animals safely from your car.

If, during your day in Yellowstone National Park, you’d prefer to immerse yourself in the wildness of nature, then I recommend visiting these two valleys:

Lamar Valley

The valley with the richest wildlife in Yellowstone is situated in the north-east of the national park – some refer to it as the ‘Serengeti of North America’. This is where you’re most likely to encounter and observe wildlife. These include wolves in particular, but also bison, moose and bears.

It’s best to visit early in the morning or in the late afternoon. In our experience, we were in Lamar Valley just before sunset and found it particularly beautiful at that time of day.

Of course, you should bear in mind that there’s no guarantee of spotting wildlife. You’ll need to bring plenty of patience and a calm demeanour.

Hayden Valley

Hayden Valley is also an excellent spot for wildlife. Here too, with a bit of luck, you can spot bison, moose, bears or wolves in their natural habitat. You can stop wherever permitted along the road. Remember, however, to keep a safe distance from the animals – not just to protect yourself.

Towards the North Entrance

Another little tip from me: we saw lots of bears, particularly on the drive towards the North Entrance. One even came right up to our car. It was an unforgettable moment – the sort of thing that probably only happens once in a lifetime.

🗺️ Important for ‘1 Day in Yellowstone’

As already mentioned, Yellowstone National Park is very large, covering an area of 8,900 km² / 2.2 million acres – which is more than 2.600x the size of Central Park in NYC! So it’s impossible to visit all the regions and their highlights in a single day. You shouldn’t put yourself under any pressure; instead, think in advance about what you’d like to see and plan your own personalised itinerary. It’s better to allow yourself more time to immerse yourself in the beauty of nature and enjoy it.

Here’s my suggestion for your route starting from Creekside Lodge / East Entrance:

West Thumb → Hayden Valley → Grand Canyon → Old Faithful/Upper Geyser Basin → Grand Prismatic

If wildlife is your priority, you could add Lamar Valley and leave out other stops instead.

🗓️ If you have more than one day to spare …

Here are a few more suggestions for places well worth visiting if you’d like to spend more than just one day in Yellowstone National Park:

  • Norris Geyser Basin – hundreds of hot springs, geysers and mud pots in a variety of colours lend the landscape a mystical atmosphere → Steamboat Geyser
  • Mammoth Hot Springs – beautiful sinter terraces → Lower Terraces / Upper Terrace Drive
  • Mount Washburn – one of the most striking mountains in Yellowstone, with lovely walking trails and fantastic views
  • Tower Fall – an easily accessible viewpoint from the car park
  • Yellowstone Lake / Lake Butte Overlook
  • Fountain Paint Pot – colourful mud pots, as well as hot springs and geysers
  • Firehole Lake Drive – a road offering fantastic views in the Lower Geyser Basin
  • Biscuit Basin – you shouldn’t plan to visit this at the moment, as it is closed (as of October 2026)
