Chedi is the name for a Buddhist temple – and even though the five star hotel The Chedi Andermatt is located in Switzerland and has a cozy chalet style, the Asian philosophy flows through the entire hotel concept: Starting from interior style, to the cuisine and the warm hospitality. But what exactly does that mean for the overall experience of your stay at The Chedi Andermatt? Find out the answer in this Hotel Review!
The Chedi Andermatt Review
As the name already implies, the five star hotel is located in the little town Andermatt in the Swiss Alps, just a short drive away from the border to Italy. During our stay we discovered that The Chedi is surrounded by one of the most scenic routes in whole Switzerland: The Furkapass with the Rhone Glacier and spectacular views – it has to be one of the most beautiful drives in whole Europe! That being said, The Chedi is not only the ideal hotel to relax but also for outdoor lovers.
We stayed at The Chedi Andermatt during the summer months which means that we definitely need to come back during the winter season to take advantage of the close location next to the ski lift!
The Rooms & Suites at The Chedi Andermatt
The Chedi has a total of 123 rooms and suites with different categories. But no matter which one you’ll choose they all have one thing in common: Each of them has a fireplace which can easily be lit up via the push of a button plus they all have either a balcony or private terrace to enjoy the fresh mountain air and view.
This has been the room at The Chedi Andermatt we stayed at and absolutely loved:
This is the „smallest category“ of The Chedi Andermatt but in fact „small“ is not the right word to describe it! The Deluxe Rooms are bigger than Executive Suites in most other hotels. The Deluxe Rooms have a living room area and a generous bathroom with a free-standing bathtub. I was literally blown away when we entered the room for the first time. The design has an extremely cozy Chalet style in combination with Asian elements like a low table and sitting area next to the fireplace. Candles and indirect light sources, which can be dimmed, make the perfect romantic atmosphere in the evening. In the morning I loved waking up the the mountain view we had from our balcony.
Other Room Categories:
If you travel with your family or as a group – or you simply want to spoil yourself – The Chedi Andermatt offers a big variety of different suites:
Entering the Deluxe Suite gave me royal vibes! Different from the Deluxe Rooms, the fireplace of the Deluxe Suites is located in the center of the room with the bedroom on the one and living area on the other side. With 100m² this suite is double the size of the (already big!) Deluxe Rooms plus they have a much bigger balcony as well. The Deluxe Suites also come as a „Grand version“ with two bed- and two bathrooms which is perfect for families
Signature Furka Suite
All together The Chedi Andermatt has three signature suites which are all unique and named after the view they offer. The Furka Suite is named after the „Furkapass“ which can be seen from almost every angle of the suite. It offers three bedroom of which the master bedroom is located on a second floor. To the master bedroom belongs a lavish bathroom with sauna, steam bath and a whirlpool. On the first floor you find the two other bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, the huge living- and dining area, a private kitchen with wine board and the big balcony. This suite is the absolute creme de la creme of The Chedi Andermatt and great for bigger families or groups.
Restaurants & Bars
Culinary highlights are an important part to pamper yourself, right? That’s why I always put a big focus on the food & bar choices a hotel has to offer. And wow – The Chedi Andermatt didn’t disappoint AT ALL!
The Restaurant – The Main Restaurant of The Chedi Andermatt
The Asian concept also flows through the dinner menu at their main restaurant called The Restaurant – which means that every dish is available as a local Swiss & an Asian version. Choose the main ingredient of your course like „Beef“, „Veggie“ (and many more options) and secondly how you would like it to be prepared. I’m a big fan of the Asian cuisines so I mostly chose these options while my husband loved to taste the Swiss recipes – it has been the best of both worlds!
The Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and you can always choose from an à la carte menu while you still haven an additional buffet for breakfast! Your food will prepared in the four open kitchens – one for starters, another one for the locals cuisine, a third one for the Asian dishes and the last one for desserts. After ordering your food you can watch the chefs cooking your meal through the glass facade.
Additionally to the main restaurant, The Chedi Andermatt has a Japanese Fine Dining restaurant in house which is only open a few days each week & weekends – so unfortunately we missed it during our stay. But the menu sounded amazing and some of my followers, who already stayed at The Chedi Andermatt before, told me that it is a MUST TRY!
The Lobby & The Courtyard
Throughout the whole day you can order coffee, snacks and proper dishes at the lobby lounge where the menu is a mix of local and Asian cuisine as well! This is a great option for lunch or a coffee during the day! When the sun is shining you will love enjoying an afternoon tea & snacks in the beautiful courtyard of The Chedi, right next to the pond.
Last but not least: The Bar
Awarded as the best hotel bar in Switzerland for several years in a row now, THE BAR of The Chedi is a must visit to try one of their signature cocktails! They all come as a – you guessed it – local and an Asian version, which makes it fun to test two or three of them! The bartenders are all experts and won several cocktail competitions, so you’re for sure in good hands and can trust their recommendations! I’m usually more of a wine instead of a cocktail drinker- but this was a complete new level!
A drive with the vintage Morgan of the Chedi Andermatt
An unforgettable experience for the summer months, which you can’t miss out on, is a road trip with the Morgan old timer. This elegant car can be rented for a a few hours to explore the Alpine scenery which lies all around The Chedi and will make you feel like you’re James Bond! Our afternoon, driving with this special car through the Alpine mountains, has been the BEST road trip ever. We’ve been exploring the surrounded mountain pass roads which offer some of the best views I’ve ever seen in Europe! Our trip along glaciers, waterfalls and mountain peaks was one for the books and an experience I will never forget!
The Cigar Library
If you like to enjoy tobacco you will be a fan of the Cigar Lounge which is located in a separate room in the lobby. It reminded me of an elegant library which invites guests to stay for a drink and a cigar after dinner. The highlight is of course the biggest collection of different cigars worldwide. Prices are starting from 8,-EUR per cigar and can go up to several 1000,- EUR for the rare ones! The Chedi is constantly expanding their collection and an explicit cigar sommelier can explain you which cigar will be the right one for your taste.
From some of the cigars they even create elixirs which will be used for special cocktails – the bar team is very creative and always tries out new things!
You don’t smoke? No worries – there is another collection which might delight you: The always changing assortment of international cheeses in a separate cheese room left me speechless. The Chedi Andermatt even has a cheese sommelier who knows exactly which cheese fits to which wine or accompanying sauce and which flavor will fit your personal „cheese preferences“ the best. I couldn’t help myself but try a few of them after dinner and it has been absolutely HEAVEN for a cheese lover such as myself!

Wellness at The Chedi Andermatt
The Spa area of The Chedi Andermatt is an absolute oasis and huge! The atmosphere is really tranquil and their treatment rooms are another level! My favorite one has been the couple treatment SUITE! Yes it is an actual suite with several rooms, a private jacuzzi, fireplace, terrace, … it has been bigger than the actual hotel suites of other accommodations we stayed at!
In the evening we loved to take a swim in the extensive indoor pool followed with a relaxing session at the Hydrotherapy spa which can be used complimentary anytime. Here you’ll find several Japanese whirlpools with different temperatures, a steam bath, sauna and ice pool. In the wintertime this is for sure the best place to warm up after a skiing session 🙂 I also loved the heated outdoor pool with mountain view which can be accesses from the Spa area as well.
Résumé of our stay at The Chedi Andermatt
Even though The Chedi Andermatt easily belongs to Top 3 Luxury Hotels in Europe we ever stayed at, the atmosphere was never snobby or „a little too much“ which is sometimes the case for other five star luxury hotels. The concept and the service has always been so warm and welcoming which gave us the feeling of being at home as soon as we stepped in The Chedi Andermatt! I can not recommend a stay at this hotel in the Swiss Alps high enough – no matter the time of year! Once you experienced „The Chedi way“ of hospitality it is hard not to feel the urge to come back again & again!
