How do you imagine yourself the Maldives? Do you see a tropical island before your inner eyes which is covered with palm trees and has a nearby sandbank? And what about endless blue waters with no other boat in sight? Well this is exactly how I would describe the Residence Maldives Dhigurah! It’s the biggest and one of the most tropical islands we ever stayed at and gave us the real “lonely island” vibe! But there are more reason why we enjoyed our stay at the Residence Maldives so much – Find out in this hotel review what they are!
The Residence Maldives Dhigurah
LOCATION & TRANSFER
Far in the South of the Maldives at the Gaafu Alifu Atoll, the nature is still untouched with many uninhabited islands and vivid reefs which are home of countless fish, sharks, turtles and dolphins. This is where the Residence Maldives is located. The Residence Dhigurah is located right in the middle of this paradise!
At the International airport Velana in Male we got welcomed by the Residence staff and escorted to the lounge where we waited for our domestic flight to the small airport in the South of the Maldives called Kooddoo. The flight just takes around 40 mins plus another 10-15 mins speedboat transfer to the resort. But after arriving at the Residence you’ll realize that ist has been worth the long journey: The island is simply beautiful, quiet and very lush!
During our stay we had the chance to test both of their villa categories: A Beach Villa and a WaterVilla. What we really loved is that every single villa of the Residence Dhigurah has a private pool. And not just a small plunge pool – we’re speaking of a big pool which is great for swimming & relaxing!
The luxury level and standard is very similar for all villa categories – so the choice for your best suitable villa only depends on the question if you prefer to stay at the beach or over the lagoon and if you’re traveling as a family or just as a couple.
Sunset Beach Pool Villa
We stayed the first nights in a Beach Villa on the sunset side of the island and absolutely loved it! Even so it’s the “smallest” room category of the resort it’s still very spacious and luxurious with a total size of 150 m² including the private verandah with ocean access and the pool.
You enter the villa to a little lounge with the bathroom on the right and the bedroom on the left hand side. The spacious bathroom with a bathtub and rain shower is completely indoors but has access to an outdoor shower which has been my preferred place for a morning shower!
The centerpiece of the light and big bedroom is the huge bed which is directly facing the verandah and the beach behind it. This private area is the perfect place to relax in sunbeds, the big pool or in a hammock which is hanging between two palm trees. The private outdoor area is perfectly protecting your privacy thanks to the many tropical plants which grow all around the villa. Only a small path between the palm trees leads to the ocean.
Sunrise Water Pool Villa
For those who love to have the blue water all around them and uninterrupted ocean views the water villas are the perfect choice. The interior is very similar to the beach villas with a big bathroom where you’ll find an indoor and outdoor shower plus a bathtub.
Thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows the bedroom is filled with much light during the day and offers great views over the blue lagoon in almost every direction.
The terrace with two sun loungers is perfect to relax and tan while taking a refreshing dip in your pool or directly in the lagoon. P.S. Of course you can’t leave the Maldives without having at least on floating breakfast – the private infinity pool is the right place for it and naturally a great photo option! 😉
The Concept of the Residence Dhigurah
A stay at the Residence Dhigurah means indulging in nature and enjoying the best of what the Maldives have to offer. While constructing the hotel they barely chopped any plants of the tropical vegetation as possible to keep the natural jungly vibe.
The resort is actually the second Residence property in the Maldives and only opened up two years ago. It is connected to the first Residence Falhumaafushi (opened in 2012) via a 1km (0.62 miles) long jetty which can either be crossed by bicycle or buggy. Thanks to this connection guests can enjoy all amenities like the different restaurants, pools, spa, etc of both resorts during their stay! But now comes my favorite part:
Right between both Residence islands and in the middle of the jetty you will find a sandbank with soft white sand and some hammocks surrounded by clear shallow water. Thanks to the connecting jetty you can easily reach the sandbank with you bicycle without the need of a boat! A little staircase leads down to the beach to enjoy this piece of paradise! It is the ideal place to watch the sunset and to see how the sky and the ocean are turning into a orange and golden sea!
Snorkeling & Water Activities
Snorkeling in the South of the Maldives is great! You’ll see a variety of colorful reef fish and other maritime life like turtles. The best spot to go in the water is either from the Beach villas (sunset side) or better directly from the water sports jetty where a staircase leads into the lagoon. Snorkeling equipment can be rented for free during the stay and you can join a guided snorkeling session which is the best way to discover the house reef.
As much as I love being underwater, my favorite activity during our stay has been the sunset dolphin cruise with a traditional Maldivian Dhoni boat! The area is famous for being home of several dolphin pods and only a few minutes after starting our tour we already got greeted by the first ones! The dolphins love to play in the waves of the boat and come really close to the front to jump out of the water! What an unforgettable experience!
At a calm spot we went to the roof of the boat, got a glass of champagne and watched the changing sunset colors while countless wild dolphins have been all around us! This was one of my absolute favorite moments in the Maldives which I will never forget!
In case the weather might be a little rainy or you might need a break from the “busy island life” 😉 the Spa of the Residence Dhigurah is the right place to get pampered! It actually is the only Spa by Clarins in the Maldives so all products are from the renowned French brand. Nestled in a tropical garden right by the water this place will bring you in “Zen Mode” as soon as you set foot in it! I especially loved that the treatment rooms are over the lagoon with a terrace to sit and enjoy the views and calm sound of the ocean after your massage.
In the center of the island you’ll find one of the biggest gardens we’ve seen so far in the Maldives, called the Earth Basket. Due to the location far in the south the resort naturally relies a lot on food deliveries just like all island resorts. But in the garden they grow many vegetables, fruits, herbs and spices on their own which then will be used in the restaurants. You can even book a cooking class where you’ll pick different ingredients fresh from the garden to create your own meal together with the chef.
Working out in the middle of the jungle: Thats exactly the feeling you’ll have when visiting the gym of the Residence Dhigurah. It is equipped with different cardio and strength machines and you can even book your private fitness coaching. Yoga Fans will enjoy the sunrise classes in the yoga pavilion in the Spa Area! Another great way to stay fit during your stay is doing a bicycle tour around the 3km long island. It is a great way to discover the resort and be active!
Breakfast & Restaurants
The Residence Dhigurah has a variety of different restaurants and the best part: You can even use all restaurants of the other Residence property too – so you’ll have a variety of dinner choices!
Pool Bar & Beach Club Café Del Sol
This restaurant is located right at the main pool of the resort and we came here every day to enjoy lunch with some refreshing drinks! The menu has many Mediterranean choices and incredible desserts while the prices are very decent for the Maldives. During the day the Café Del Sol is the best place to be lazy and in the evening to enjoy some cocktails when they turn part of the beach club in an open air dancing floor with a live DJ! I absolutely loved that!
Cantonese Cuisine is one of our absolute favorite ones so we’ve been really excited when we found out that the Li Bai restaurant of the Residence Dhigurah is specialized in traditional Chinese food. Unfortunately they don’t have our all time favorite dish crispy Peking duck but many other amazing things like Dim Sum or stir fried beef tenderloin which both have been amazing!
The Dining Room
For the biggest variety of choices on the menu you have to come to the main restaurant Dining Room. It is not only open for lunch and dinner with International & Asian specialties but also serves the breakfast on a big buffet. The Dining Room is an open restaurant right at the beach which makes a very laidback setting!
Overwater Restaurant Falhumaa
We had our last and favorite dinner during our stay at the overwater restaurant Falhumaa which is located on the other Residence property. We got picked up from our room by buggy and drove all the way over the connecting jetty to reach this special restaurant over the lagoon. They have many tables right at water where many sharks and sting rays swim around which get attracted by the light. The Falhumaa is an amazing setting for a very romantic dinner with a mouthwatering fine dining menu. They have mostly seafood but also great meat or vegetarian options! Since we both don’t eat fish we tried the Beef Tenderloin and it has been absolutely amazing!
The perfect stay at the Maldives can be found at the Residence Dhigurah! We had a great and unforgettable time in the South of the Maldives and couldn’t imagine a better place to immerse in nature, recharge the batteries and enjoy absolute privacy and calmness than at this resort! The Residence has their main focus on couples but is also great for families or when traveling with friends for a relaxing vacation. I highly recommend the Residence Dhigurah for an authentic Maldives experience on an island where you can either have much to explore or simply do nothing at all! 🙂
We had a sponsored stay at the Residence Resort.
