Andalusia is probably Spain’s best-known region, yet it is full of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. The name alone exudes a sense of freedom and wanderlust. Andalusia is characterised by endless landscapes, mesmerizing beaches, enchanting nature and its typical white villages – combined with well-developed roads and manageable distances. This makes it ideal for a road trip. You can expect the perfect mix of city, nature and relaxation.

In my post, I would like to present a possible route for your tour of Andalusia, accompanied, as always, by my personal tips. The focus of this route is on conscious travel and enjoyment. My aim was not to ‘tick off’ as many highlights as possible, but to allow enough time for relaxation and to immerse yourself in the Andalusian way of life. A wonderful, unforgettable experience!

As usual, I have marked all the highlights and spots for you on a map of Andalusia.

How many days should you plan for your Andalusia road trip?

To visit the most beautiful places in Andalusia at a leisurely pace, you should plan at least 7 days for your road trip – or even better, a few days more.

Possible itinerary:

• 2 days in Seville – explore the famous and beautiful capital of Andalusia
• 2-3 days inland – Discover nature and visit some of the authentic Pueblos Blancos (white villages)
• 2 days Costa del Sol – Relax on the beach and stroll through the villages

You should definitely not plan less time than this, otherwise your trip through Andalusia could quickly become stressful!

When is the best time to go on your Andalusia road trip?

Andalusia is in the south of Spain, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.

Outside of Seville, it can be quiet even during the summer holidays, as the region is still an insider tip in Spain, but the heat can be very unpleasant for a tour of Andalusia. Therefore, I recommend spring (April – June) or autumn (September – October). It is simply the best time to travel to Andalusia, with ideal weather.

The ideal route for your Andalusia road trip

Start: Seville (2 days)

The Andalusian capital Seville is the ideal starting point for your round trip, and not just for logistical reasons. Seville offers you a grand welcome to the Andalusian way of life, with lots of history and delicious tapas. Be sure to plan 2 full days!

You’ll love exploring the historic old town and sampling your way through the countless tapas bars. In the evening, at sunset, make yourself comfortable in one of the rooftop bars and enjoy the fantastic view with a delicious drink.

My Tip: I recommend picking up your rental car at the end of your stay in Seville, as the city is easy to explore on foot.

Querencia de Sevilla, Autograph Collection

A beautiful hotel in the heart of Seville, perfectly located for strolls through the old town and featuring a stunning rooftop terrace with a pool and bar offering unique views over the city.

Pueblos Blancos – The White Villages (at least 2 days)

The Pueblos Blancos are probably the most striking image of Andalusia. The route, which connects a total of 19 white villages, winds its way through the mountainous landscape. It is simply an indescribable feeling to see the cute villages sparkling from afar. A sight that is an absolute must during your Andalusia road trip!

In addition to their whitewashed houses, all the villages are characterised by their Moorish roots. Narrow streets and small squares invite you to stroll around. You will often find the remains of Moorish castles. The colourful floral decorations attached to many houses are super pretty and shine cheerfully against the white walls.

However, I find their mostly spectacular location on steep mountain slopes or rocky outcrops most impressive. They offer fantastic views of the countryside and the sea.

Travel time: Without stops – which I definitely do not recommend – the route takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Please note: Some of the roads are very narrow, so you should drive carefully. This also allows you to enjoy the view much better.

My recommended stops:

First things first: every one of these villages is worth a visit! All of the ones we explored were incredibly charming and peaceful. It felt like we had them all to ourselves. You simply have to see their charm for yourself. Here is just a small selection of my highlights:

• Arcos de la Frontera – one of the most famous pueblos blancos, perched on a rock with cliffs on both sides offering spectacular views of the region

• Zahara de la Sierra – located on a mountain with a turquoise reservoir, also known for its olive groves

• Setenil de las Bodegas – built in a gorge & unique because its houses were built into the surrounding rocks. You should definitely check it out!

Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park (1-2 days)

The breathtaking Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park should definitely be on your itinerary when travelling through Andalusia. It is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and one of the rainiest regions in Spain, which is reflected in its lush green landscape with deep gorges. A true paradise for hiking and climbing!

Recommended activities:

Go on a short hike or simply enjoy a scenic drive. You can take your time and visit the many great viewpoints in the nature park.

If you want to take more time and experience a little more action, why not take the opportunity to go on a canyoning tour? I had a lot of fun doing this, although you should be prepared to get wet from time to time. But that’s easy to accept, because you don’t get an adventure like this every day.

Another item on my bucket list is the Vía Ferrata El Caimán (Via Ferrata is the name given to various spectacular climbing routes in Spain). It features numerous bridges and impressive passages. However, you should be in good physical condition and have a little courage. Please note: only undertake this tour with a guide!

A highlight in Andalusia: Ronda (1-2 days)

My favourite town in Andalusia is Ronda – perched on a rocky plateau, with a beautiful 120-metre-deep canyon (El Tajo Gorge) spanned by a bridge that is more than 200 years old. Simply spectacular! The white houses, some of which seem to cling to the edge of the precipice, are also typical here. I highly recommend planning a visit in Ronda during your Andalusia road trip.

A popular viewpoint offers a magnificent view of the striking Puente Nuevo bridge, which spans the gorge with a small waterfall below. I have marked the spot on my map. It is an absolute highlight in Ronda! The path is a bit strenuous to walk, especially the way back, which is quite steep, but it is well maintained. The best time to visit is late in the afternoon or shortly before sunset, when the bridge is illuminated by the sun.

Ronda has also magically attracted many artists and writers. No wonder, because the town is truly enchanting. Let yourself be seduced and stroll leisurely through the pretty old town with its small cafés and shops. It’s hard to imagine a more relaxing way to enjoy your holiday.

Olive oil experience

Not far from Ronda is the La Almazara olive oil mill. It is part of LA Organic and produces high-quality organic olive oil. The facility houses a restaurant with a museum and is set in a picturesque backdrop of olive groves, vineyards and lavender fields. From the restaurant, which has been designed in a striking and very special way, you can enjoy fantastic views of the endless expanse of the Andalusian landscape.

During a guided tour, you will gain an insight into olive oil production and, of course, you can also taste the olive oil. Important: you should book the tour and tasting in advance.

Optional: Ubrique

If you have time and feel like it, you can make a short stop in Ubrique on your way to the coast. The village is also one of the Pueblos Blancos and boasts a colourful church on the main square. It is also known for its traditional leather production. It’s hard to believe that Spain’s main suppliers of the highest quality leather, which is sourced by world-renowned designers, are located here.

Ubrique is optional for your Andalusia road trip, but not a must-see.

Costa del Sol (at least 2 days)

What would a trip through Spain without a detour to one of its sun-kissed coasts? With at least 300 days of sunshine per year, the Costa del Sol lives up to its name and is the perfect place to relax and end your Andalusia road trip. The key question is whether you prefer a quieter or livelier atmosphere.

Quieter: The towns of Nerja and Estepona are located at the outer points of the Costa del Sol and exude a relaxed holiday atmosphere on beautiful beaches. Nerja is also famous for its coastal promenade, which runs along a rocky outcrop with breathtaking views of the sea and the surrounding mountains. Estepona charms visitors with its lovely, flower-filled old town.

Livelier: Marbella is not only more busy, but also more luxurious. Glamour, marinas, boutiques, a beautiful old town with dreamy alleys against a picturesque mountain backdrop characterise the city. Perhaps you would like to immerse yourself in this very special atmosphere and stroll through Marbella among the “rich and beautiful”. Of course, you will also find fantastic beaches for sunbathing and swimming here.

Activities:

• Beach walks
• Sunsets
• Beach clubs

Extra tip: I recommend visiting one of the numerous wineries on the Costa del Sol. It’s simply wonderful to stroll through the vineyards and enjoy delicious Spanish wine in the sun. For me, this is definitely a must-do during a Andalusia road trip.

Practical tips for your Andalusia road trip

Car hire

It is much more practical to rent a smaller car, as your Andalusia road trip will often take you along narrow roads.

Parking in old towns is usually difficult, so it is best to park just outside.

Timing

• Start early to avoid the crowds.
• Be aware of the midday heat in summer and always carry enough water with you.
• Avoid weekends for the more popular destinations such as Ronda or Seville.

Planning

Of course, you can also plan your road trip in the opposite direction. In this case, you could start on the Costa del Sol and then drive towards Seville.

In any case, plan your trip so that you can enjoy a stress-free time. So: don’t make too many stops, but really focus on quality instead of quantity. The journey itself is something very special and part of your experience. Just enjoy the dreamy landscapes, the sun and the Spanish way of life.

Why should a road trip through Andalusia be on your bucket list for Spain?

Andalusia has so much to offer – spectacular mountain landscapes, enchanting nature, white beaches and villages, magnificent Moorish buildings… The list could go on and on, considering that Andalusia is also the land of flamenco, sherry and horses. A trip through this incomparable region is simply amazing! You can expect a perfect balance between nature, authentic villages, relaxation by the sea, city strolls and excellent cuisine. And all this without having to travel long distances.

Who doesn’t immediately think of Seville thinking about the famous opera ‘Carmen’? It’s no coincidence that the composer chose the city’s impressive backdrop as the setting for his work. Seville is not only the capital of Andalusia in Spain, but also the cultural heart of the region. For centuries, this has been shown in its Moorish heritage, combined with the Spanish way of life, tapas and flamenco.

The compact city is ideal for an intensive and exciting city break, as Seville’s sights are almost seamlessly strung together – architectural masterpieces from all eras. How many days should you plan for Seville?

Three to four days are ideal to see all of Seville’s sights at a leisurely pace and still having enough time for tapas and rooftop bars.

If you only have a weekend, it is of course possible to explore the city in two days, but this requires a tight schedule.

Spending more time in a beautiful place is always worthwhile, and Seville is definitely one of those destinations. The city is often referred to as the capital of flamenco. So where else could you experience it more consciously than here?

When is the best time to visit Seville?

The ideal months are March to May and September to October, as the temperatures are pleasant and perfect for sightseeing. Evenings are not too cool to stroll through the city.

Summers are correspondingly hot (often over 35 °C). If you are planning your trip to Seville at this time, it is advisable to schedule all activities in the morning or evening.

Winters here are quite mild and you will encounter fewer tourists – so it’s also a great travel period if you want to explore Seville in peace.

Must-see sights in Seville

Plaza de España – Seville’s most iconic square

It’s hard to imagine visiting Seville without strolling across the legendary Plaza de España at least once. It feels almost magical to experience this impressive square up close and not just look at it in a photo. Seville owes its monumental semicircular architecture to the great architect Aníbal González Álvarez-Ossorio in the run-up to the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition. Framed by a beautiful park and surrounded by a 515-metre-long canal, the Plaza de España is one of the most spectacular monuments in Europe and, of course, one of Seville’s most popular sights.

An absolute classic: hire a rowing boat and enjoy a trip along the canal – past the majestic buildings and under the bridges – pure romance! Important: only cash payments are accepted for the boats, so make sure to pack some Euros. We paid €10 for a trip.

Real Alcázar de Sevilla – the most beautiful place in the city

As early as 913, the Moors laid the foundation stone for the royal palace – Real Alcázar de Sevilla. Over the centuries, it served as a residence for many rulers. Each of them expanded the huge complex, leaving behind traces of their culture and architectural style. As a result, the palace is a fascinating blend of Moorish, Gothic and Renaissance architecture. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and is the oldest royal palace in Europe still in use today – when the Spanish king comes to Seville, he resides here.

The best way to see it is on foot. The palace gardens are also breathtakingly beautiful and extensive, so you can easily lose yourself in them.

Game of Thrones fans take note: The palace – and especially the gardens – served as the filming location for the water gardens of Dorne.

Of course, the Real Alcázar de Sevilla is one of, if not THE top attraction in Seville and therefore an absolute must-see! Due to its popularity, many visitors flock here every day, so it is advisable to book tickets in advance.

Catedral de Sevilla

Another highlight in Seville is the Cathedral of Santa María de la Sede, whose construction began in the early 15th century. After St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican and St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, it is the third largest church and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A main attraction inside is the tomb of Christopher Columbus, who found his final resting place here.

The Giralda – formerly a minaret and now the cathedral’s bell tower – is THE landmark of Seville. The way up is easy thanks to 35 ramps (instead of stairs) and offers a spectacular view over the rooftops of the city.

Metropol Parasol (‘Las Setas’) – a modern contrast to the old town

The Metropol Parasol (also known as Las Setas – ‘the mushrooms’) is a large avant-garde wooden artwork. Located in the heart of the city, it forms a big contrast to the otherwise historic architecture. Designed by German architect Jürgen Mayer H., it has become another landmark of Seville.

From the Metropol Parasol, you can enjoy a fantastic view over the city. It is especially beautiful here at sunset.

Triana district – authentic Seville

Seville is vibrant and fun-loving. Life itself gives the Sevillanos and Sevillanas plenty of reasons to simply enjoy themselves. In the afternoon, they like to meet up for a round of tapas – especially at the weekend. The Triana district, on the other side of the Guadalquivir, is particularly popular. It used to be a poor neighbourhood where sailors and craftsmen lived. Ceramic production was one of the most common crafts. This is still evident in the many colourful murals made from typical tiles that can be admired in Triana.

Today, it is the new hip district. From the early evening hours, the riverbank becomes lively, as the sunset light is particularly enchanting here. Triana is known for its top-notch tapas bars and its flamenco tradition. For me, it’s one of the best sights in Seville – and it is less touristy than the old town! Take a relaxing evening stroll through this beautiful neighbourhood and enjoy dinner in one of the traditional bars.

To really immerse yourself in the diversity and enjoyment of tapas, we recommend a guided tour of several tapas bars – a culinary and cultural must-do in Seville. Guided because the guides take you to bars that only the locals know about, where you can enjoy the most authentic tapas and traditional flamenco. This is Seville at its best!

If you discover a passion for flamenco, I recommend visiting the world’s only flamenco museum, located here in Seville. Flamenco combines many cultures that have found their way into Spain over the centuries and is listed as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.

If you want to experience Andalusian temperament, you’re guaranteed to find it here. You can expect a great atmosphere in one of the hottest after-work spots for locals – which is why it’s also very popular during the week!

• Casa Moreno – a real insider tip:

At first glance, Casa Moreno looks like a small local supermarket. In fact, it houses a little tapas bar focusing on cold cuts, cheese, small tapas and drinks. It is very popular with students and is perfect for an aperitif before dinner.

• Los Seises Sevilla – drinks with a view of the cathedral:

You can enjoy a good drink in a stylish atmosphere at Los Seises Sevilla, which is in a wonderful location in the middle of the old town. The rooftop bar also offers a great view of the cathedral. It’s best to enjoy it at sunset – simply fantastic!

Alternatively the rooftop bar of the Querencia de Sevilla Hotel offers an even closer view at the cathedral and overlooks the entire old town!

Road trip through Andalusia

A road trip through Andalusia is more than just an exciting journey. This adventure gives you a feeling of freedom that you can hardly find anywhere else. Small hidden villages, dreamy landscapes and olive groves.

As already mentioned, Seville is the perfect starting point. The city has excellent infrastructure and good car rental connections.

Of all the Canary Islands we’ve visited so far, Tenerife is by far my favourite! This is primarily due to the fact that the island has a diverse and impressive natural environment to offer: From unique beaches to volcanoes and breathtaking green cliffs. The island is ideal for adventure, but at the same time you will also find plenty of sights to relax and unique photo spots on Tenerife.

The diversity of Tenerife offers photographers in particular ideal conditions and motifs for spectacular photos. In this article, I have compiled the most beautiful photo spots on Tenerife for you, including my very special insider tips and recommendations for the best time of day or photographic subtleties. When is the best time to visit Tenerife?

Tenerife enjoys a mild climate all year round and is therefore a great holiday destination at any time of year. In winter, temperatures reach around 17°C, which is ideal for hiking, while in summer they can climb up to 30°C.

Good to know: There are noticeable differences in the weather between the north and south sides of Tenerife. Clouds tend to cling to the 3750 metre high Teide volcano in the centre of the island, where they tend to rain down. As a result, the north is somewhat rainier and cooler, while the south tends to stay warm and dry. The differences in climate are also reflected in the landscape: the north is green and subtropical, while the south is very dry and desert-like.

How many days are ideal for Tenerife?

The island of Tenerife is perfect as a holiday destination for a few days, but also for a longer stay. Around 5 days are enough to capture the most beautiful photo spots on Tenerife. However, if you also want to spend a few days relaxing on the beach, a week is ideal.

How to get from place to place on Tenerife

To be able to move around Tenerife flexibly and independently, a hire car is the ideal choice – not least so that you always have your photo equipment with you. The easiest way to pick it up is directly at one of the two airports after landing. The roads on Tenerife are in very good condition throughout and are easy to drive on. If you still prefer not to use a car, the bus on Tenerife is a good alternative. It travels to all spots around the island. There is even a bus service to Teide National Park in the centre of the island.

San Cristóbal de La Laguna – Colonial flair & old town charm 

San Cristóbal de La Laguna was the first town to be founded on Tenerife in the 15th century – today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The narrow streets lined with colourful houses with picturesque courtyards and the beautiful historic churches are overwhelming testimonies to that time.

With its colourful doors and windows, ornate lanterns and cobblestones, the city is perfect for street photography.

My tip: You should come here early in the morning before the streets are full of people.

Playa de Castro – Hidden waterfall at the beach

One of my favourite sights and therefore one of the most beautiful photo spots on Tenerife is the black beach Playa de Castro. It’s not just the dark sand and its location between cliffs that make this beach so special, but above all a secret bay with a waterfall that plunges down the cliffs – directly into the ocean.

Directions: If you are travelling by car, it is best to park at the Mirador San Pedro restaurant and walk down to the beach. The path with several viewpoints is already worth seeing. Although you have to walk a few metres uphill from the car park to get to the beach (and of course back up again on the way back), it’s worth it.

Important: To reach the waterfall on the beach, you should avoid high tide and days with strong swell. The tide changes depending on the time of year. I strongly recommend that you check online beforehand.

Best time: The morning is very suitable – for soft light & long exposures with a tripod.

Winery with a view – Bodegas Monje

Bodegas Monje in the north of Tenerife is not only known for its wines, but also for its fantastic views. After a guided tour of the winery, you can enjoy a tasting with a view of the Atlantic. The restaurant offers delicious Canarian dishes and is also popular with locals – perfect for a relaxed lunch with a fantastic backdrop. A great spot for photos and a little break!

Anaga Rural Park – cloud forest & spectacular views

Almost the entire north-eastern tip of Tenerife is made up of the Anaga Rural Park, which is known for its spectacular coastline, hikes to viewpoints and moss-covered forests. The laurel forest is the last primeval forest in Europe and has been a biosphere reserve since 2015. As the park has so much to offer, it is worth planning a full day to explore it. Anaga Rural Park is home to some of the most beautiful and impressive photo spots on Tenerife, which you should definitely not miss.

My tip: Use the early morning to experience the mystical foggy atmosphere up close.

Roque de Taborno – a free-standing rock with panoramic views

There are numerous opportunities for hikes in the Anaga Rural Park. We opted for the hike to and around the Roque de Taborno rock. During the hike, you will be able to enjoy unique views of the coastline.

Directions: The route starts in the small village of Taborno, with only a few houses and one road. Park your car at the end of the road and walk past the small chapel on the right to the Mirador sobre Barranco La Fajana viewpoint. From here, a small staircase on the left leads down into the forest. The entire hike takes you clockwise around the rock and back to the chapel. It took us around 2.5 hours to walk the 4 kilometres, including a few photo stops.

Please note: I would describe the difficulty level as moderate. In some places, the path is more like a path along the cliff or you have to avoid prickly cacti. However, if you are fit and wear good shoes, this hike is no problem and will reward you with unforgettable views – including some of the most beautiful photo spots on Tenerife.

Path of Senses

This easy walk will immerse you in a ‘hobbit forest’ atmosphere. Typical vegetation in the Anaga Rural Park are the moss-covered laurel forests, which create a mystical atmosphere, especially in foggy weather. Small circular trails lead from the large car park at Cruz del Carmen into the forest and take at least 10 minutes and up to 2 hours – depending on which trail you follow. But don’t worry, everything is signposted. Just follow the ‘Path of the Senses’ sign at the car park and then your desired route.

Carretera de Taganana viewpoint

From the highest point of the Carretera de Taganana, you can enjoy a fantastic view over the rugged north coast and the picturesque village of Taganana. You can reach it directly by car and after a short hike. Find the exact location on my map with all Tenerife Photo Spots!

Road to Playa Benijo

A drive to Playa Benijo is perfect for sunset – with views of the rugged coastline and dramatic waves. From the black sand beach, you can enjoy a great view of the coastline of the Anaga Rural Park. There are black volcanic rock formations in the sea, which also make brilliant photo opportunities.

Garachico – Colorful coastal village with lava pools

Garachico was once the island’s commercial center with the largest port until most of the town was destroyed during a volcanic eruption in 1706. The pretty old town with colorful houses and a great promenade invites you to stroll and linger and also offers fantastic photo spots that you shouldn’t miss.

Photo Spots in Garachico:

Castillo de San Miguel

The small fortress is located on the promenade of Garachico and was built in the 16th century to protect the harbor. Fortunately, it survived the volcanic eruption in 1706 and today offers a beautiful backdrop with a view of the coast.

Natural Lava Pools

They are located directly on the coast and offer the opportunity to bathe in calm sea water. I was particularly fascinated by the enchanting reflections on the surface of the water and the exciting movements of the water, which are perfect for long exposures.

Parque De La Puerta De Tierra

The Parque De La Puerta De Tierra is a beautiful oasis in Garachico and thanks to its elevated position, you can enjoy a unique view of the town from here.

Los Gigantes – majestic cliffs

The settlement of Los Gigantes owes its name to the surrounding steep cliffs on the ocean. On a small black sand beach (Playa de los Guíos), which is protected from strong waves, you can see them up close. Due to its easy accessibility and small size, Playa Los Gigantes is usually much busier than other beaches on Tenerife. However, the view of the impressive cliffs, which are up to 600 meters high, is simply gigantic.

My tip: there are usually no people at the end of the beach, so you can still take photos that make it look like you’re all alone. Perspective is everything!

Best time: It’s best to choose sunset – the light bathes the cliffs in warm colors.

Los Gigantes Photo spots:

Mirador Archipenque 

From this vantage point, you have the perfect view of the cliffs and the small harbor. To the right, at the end of the island on the Punta Tena headland, you will see an imposing lighthouse whose appearance is reminiscent of bygone days of seafaring.

A boat tour offers you a completely different and special perspective – directly from the water.

Teno Rural Park – Wild & untouched

The Teno Rural Park is a mountain massif over 1300 meters high that covers the entire western tip of the island. As it used to be a separate island and only later merged with Tenerife, an independent landscape with special biodiversity has developed here. Winding roads lead through the remote mountain landscape with beautiful green valleys, allowing you to explore and marvel at the area from afar, as well as numerous hiking trails. As you can imagine, there are plenty of impressive photo spots waiting for you here.

My Tip: The roads in Teno Rural Park are very narrow and full of tight bends, so if you are not a very experienced driver, I recommend a guided tour with a buggy → This Buggy Tour to Masca is rated the best!

Masca  – the hidden mountain village

A special attraction in the Teno Rural Park is the tiny village of Masca, which is located in the Masca Valley and consists of just a handful of houses. The village itself is not very spectacular, but the view of the small settlement with its dramatic location, surrounded by rugged mountains and a green-covered monolith, is a spectacular motif. The drive down into the valley alone is breathtaking.

Best time: Two hours before sunset, when the golden light falls into the valley before disappearing behind the mountains.

My Tip: During the return trip from the valley up into the mountains, the sun comes out from behind again. This way you can experience a second sunset.

The sunny south of Tenerife

• Las Margaritas Banana Experience – banana plantations up close
• Playa Amarilla – unique rock formations

Las Margaritas Banana Experience – Banana Plantations up close

Banana plantations are absolutely typical of the Tenerife landscape. The Las Margaritas banana farm is an authentic plantation that still practices traditional organic banana cultivation. A visit gives you the opportunity to learn more about Tenerife’s banana cultivation and products.

Photo spots: The huge banana leaves make an excellent natural setting for creative compositions. You can also create fascinating pictures with close-ups of the bright yellow banana plants or purple banana blossoms.

My Tip: I recommend taking part in a guided tour with a tasting of bananas and local banana products (even banana wine!). Afterwards you can take photos undisturbed. The entrance fee with tasting is only 10 EUR!

Playa Amarilla – Unique rocks & turquoise blue water

The golden yellow volcanic rocks, which have formed artistic shapes through erosion, gave the beach its name. Playa Amarilla is a popular swimming and snorkeling spot for holidaymakers and locals alike. The color contrast between the shimmering golden rocks and the turquoise blue water makes the beach one of the most beautiful photo spots on Tenerife for me.

Best time: Early morning creates a calm atmosphere and soft light.

Photo tip: Playa Amarilla is perfect for detailed shots and portraits in a special setting.

The volcanic center of Tenerife

• Teide National Park – Los Roques de Garcia, Queen’s Shoe, Minas de San Jose, cable car to the summit of Teide

Teide National Park – volcanic landscape like on Mars

In the center of Tenerife, the roads lead from 0 meters to almost 2500 meters above sea level, because the Teide National Park is home to the highest elevation in Spain and on all the islands in the Atlantic: the volcano Mount Teide with a height of 3715 meters. Over the millennia, it has overlooked the island with fascinating rock formations – the last time it erupted was in 1909. As you drive into the national park, you can already see the black lava fields, which are still covered in green forest at the beginning. The higher you go, the fewer plants you see and the landscape is reminiscent of Death Valley in the USA. 

My tip: Plan enough time for your trip through the national park and keep your eyes open, as spectacular views and landscapes await you, which are definitely some of the most beautiful photo spots on Tenerife.

Best time: At sunset, you will be above the clouds. This creates a magical light and the rocks start to glow red. After dusk, this is an ideal place for breathtaking star photography. Incidentally, Tenerife generally has one of the darkest night skies in the world – almost no light pollution.

Photo Spots at the Teide National Park, Tenerife

Los Roques de Garcia – Fascinating rocky landscape

The best pictures of Teide can be taken from the Roques de García parking lot and the surrounding area. The bizarre rock formations provide a beautiful foreground with the Teide summit in the background. The Roques de García themselves also offer a variety of opportunities for photographers. There is a pleasant circular path that leads through the mighty rock formations.

Photo tip: Use a wide-angle lens to emphasize the massive rocks in the foreground.

Another great view of the rock formations is from the Mirador de La Ruleta, opposite the rocks. There are also fewer visitors here than at the rocks themselves.

Queen’s Shoe – natural rock formation in the shape of a shoe

As the name suggests, this rock is reminiscent of an oversized lady’s shoe – a very special photo motif for me. There is a parking lot near the rock and the last few steps are on foot.

Minas de San Jose

The viewpoint of the Minas de San Jose is located at an altitude of 2000 meters in a moon-like landscape of unique rock formations, which is completely covered with fine-grained pumice stone and glows in yellowish to green-bluish colors in the sun.

Photo tip: From here you have a unique view over the valley and the peaks behind.

Cable car to the summit of Teide – panoramic views over the whole of Tenerife

To get (almost) to the summit of Mount Teide, you can take the Teleferico Teide cable car. It starts at an altitude of 2356 meters and goes up to 3555 meters. From up here, you can enjoy a fantastic panoramic view of the entire island – one of the most beautiful photo spots on Tenerife.

Important note: On the → Website der Teide Seilbahn you will find a webcam with live images of the summit, as well as information on whether the cable car is open, as the cable car does not run in windy weather (which is often the case on the summit of Mount Teide). 

Price: A return ticket costs 38 euros per person. If you only want to take the cable car one way and walk the other, you pay 21 euros for an adult. Tickets can be booked either on site or, ideally, online.

Of course, you can also hike to the summit of the volcano, but a guided tour is recommended for this ascent!

When I think of city trips in Europe, my first thought is always: Barcelona! For me, the Catalan city is the perfect combination of beach, sightseeing and great food with almost constant sunny weather. What is the best time to travel to Barcelona?

You will have the best trip to Barcelona during the shoulder season, either in spring or autumn. During the summer months, Barcelona – like most European destinations – is very crowded. In spring and fall, the weather is (usually) pleasantly warm and sunny, the crowds are smaller than during the summer vacations, and hotel prices are therefore more affordable.

How many days are ideal for Barcelona?

The city and its surroundings have a lot to offer, so I would recommend at least three to four nights to really explore and enjoy Barcelona. But even a week wouldn’t be too long – especially if you’ve booked a nice hotel to enjoy while exploring the city.

The iconic basilica, which is not yet completed, must of course not be missing in any travel guide for Barcelona!

It is one of the places worth getting up early for! Especially the dreamlike photo spot, at the pond of the Placa de Gaudi park, is very crowded later in the day. For those who don’t like getting up early, there’s also a great chance for pictures later: On the opposite side of the basilica in the Placa de la Sagrada Familia park. Just before sunset, the low sun gives the masterpiece a magical light and most tourists are gone by this time. The best photo spot is just to the left of the dog park – there is a walkway leading towards the Sagrada Familia.

But also the inside of the Sagrada is not to be missed! It’s breathtaking: especially on sunny days, the basilica is bathed in the most beautiful colors thanks to the colorful windows. There is an incredible amount of details to discover, which is why you should plan at least an hour for the tour with audio guide. You should book the tickets well in advance, as they are always fully booked!

Insider Tip in Barcelona: The Rooftop Bar Ayre Rossellón Bar Terraza 

The rooftop terrace with bar Ayre Rossellón Bar Terraza of the Hotel Rosellón offers a unique view of the Sagrada above the roofs of the surrounding buildings. Therefore, it is an incredible and unique photo spot in Barcelona, which you must not miss! Especially in the late afternoon, when the Sagrada Familia is covered in a magical warm light.The entrance is free and the prices for drinks and snacks are absolutely reasonable and not overpriced. However, you MUST have a reservation!

Here’s how to get a reservation at the best rooftop bar in Barcelona:

The reservation can only be made → online ! The spots open EXACTLY one week before the day of the planned visit at 12 midnight. If you want to come on the weekend, the best spots will be fully booked after a short time. So set an alarm to make sure you don’t miss your reservation.

Parc de la Citudella

One of the most beautiful photo spots in Barcelona is the Parc de la Citudella. Especially the big fountain looks beautiful during the golden hour, just before sunset. This makes it very crowded at this time of the day. For photography, therefore, the early morning is best suited and can be combined by the immediate proximity best with the Arc de Triomf:

Just a few minutes walk from the park is the Arc de Triomf. In the afternoon it is a popular place for joggers, walkers and tourists. But at sunrise you have this beautiful place almost to yourself and  a soft light of the rising sun. This makes for dreamlike pictures.

La Rambla

Of course, a walk along La Rambla is a MUST during a stay in Barcelona. The area with its many small streets, cafes and restaurants invites you to stroll in the evening. The street leads from Plaça de Catalunya to the Columbus Monument at the harbor. Along the way, you’ll pass the covered food market Mercat de la Boqueria, which is great for snacks or just strolling.

Caution: La Rambla is often very crowded, which is why many pickpockets and con artists mingle with the masses. So always keep a tight grip on your belongings.

Here are two of my insider tips when visiting the La Rambla:

Plaça Reial

You should avoid the restaurants on La Rambla itself, because they are classic tourist traps: Expensive but not good!

Instead, go through a small alley from La Rambla to the Plaça Reial behind it, where you can enjoy great bars and restaurants and a unique atmosphere. As a restaurant tip for delicious tapas and sangria I can recommend the Ocaña! We came here several times to eat

Basílica de Santa Maria del Pi

Tucked away in the cute little streets around La Rambla you’ll find the Basílica de Santa Maria del Pi church. The church itself is not particularly impressive, but at certain times of the day there is a tour up the bell tower, which is otherwise closed to visitors! The climb on foot is a bit strenuous, but the view is worth it and beautiful. The tour cost 8€ per person and took place (during our visit to Barcelona) at 3:30pm. It’s best to ask again when you enter the church for the current time to visit the tower, as it may have changed.

Barceloneta Beach 

 Barceloneta Beach is the popular and well-known beach of Barcelona. It’s not necessarily the best beach to relax, but there’s always something going on: people playing volleyball, meeting up with friends, and vendors walking around with mojitos and cold beer. Perfect for soaking up some sun and enjoying the unique view of the striking W Hotel. Alternatively, you can stroll along the promenade and enjoy a glass of sangria in one of the many bars.

The Montjuïc Hill

Another beautiful sight in Barcelona is the ride with the cable car Telefèric de Montjuïc from the port up to the 213 m high hill Montjuïc. For the World’s Fair in 1929, numerous parks, palaces, the Barcelona Castle and a botanical garden were built. Especially beautiful ist the National Palace with the National Art Museum of Catalonia, whose staircase offers a great view of the Plaça D’espanya.

Insider Tip: The best sight over Barcelona – the Bunkers el Carmel

In the late afternoon I recommend you to visit the best viewpoint over Barcelona: Bunkers el Carmel is an old bunker complex with a panoramic view over the ocean, the city and the surroundings of Barcelona, with the mountains behind.

Especially at sunset, it is a popular spot for photographers and locals who enjoy the special atmosphere. Therefore it is well visited at this time – but you can always find a good spot!

Due to the increasing popularity of the Bunkers el Carmel and the complaint of the surrounding residents, the area is now closed punctually at 7 pm. In autumn the sunset is already over at this time, but in summer this is unfortunately still too early. Alternatively, you can easily go to the surrounding park, which offers the same view. The walkway up to the bunker is surrounded by a beautiful forest. Therefore, it is also suitable for walking or jogging during the day, while you can enjoy a great view over the city and the Sagrada Familia.

Attention for all who arrive with their own car. There are exclusively private parking spaces in the area and we have seen a tow truck driving in circles. Especially in the late afternoon this is the case, because the residents are understandably not pleased about the many people who flock to Carmel at this time and occupy their parking spaces.

For this reason, we parked a few streets below and walked up the rest of the way. Alternatively, an Uber is also a good solution.

Tibidabo

Even higher above Barcelona is the cathedral Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor of Tibidabo at 512 meters. I saw this place on a picture before our trip and therefore had to come here. It is a Catholic cathedral, which, thanks to its location high in the mountains, offers a breathtaking view of the entire area.

There is also a small amusement park for children right in front of the cathedral.

Insider Tip in the surrounding of Barcelona: The Santa Maria de Montserrat Monastery

For your visit to Barcelona, it’s worth booking a rental car at least one day to get to an insider spot in the surrounding area of Barcelona: The Monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat, which, in my opinion, is totally underrated. It’s just a 50-minute drive from Barcelona and surrounded by impressive rock formations. The view, the architecture, and the location – it’s just breathtaking! When we arrived on a Tuesday afternoon, we encountered few other tourists and were thus able to explore the place at our leisure.

In the near surroundings of the Monastery of Montserrat, there is also the famous stone staircase, which became famous through big Instagram pages. Unfortunately, it is now closed off due to the great popularity to keep tourists from climbing up.

On the way back, you can make a stop on a quiet country road that winds through the rocks. It is hard to believe that this place is just 45 km from Barcelona. The panorama of the surrounding mountains is very idyllic!

The Monastery of Montserrat is the perfect day trip from Barcelona.

The Pueblos Blancos – The best towns and places to visit

1. Arcos de la Frontera

One of the most famous and beautiful Pueblos Blancos is Arcos de la Frontera. The town is located on a hilltop with cliffs on both sides for spectacular views over the region and other nearby villages.
Whitewashed tiny alleys with arches above them, make beautiful photogenic motives and will let you dream away. Make sure to step by the center of the old town, Plaza del Cabildo, with the church Santa Maria de la Asuncion from the 13th century, a 17th century town hall, a medieval castle and beautiful view point.
The town hall has been transformed into a unique hotel. From the terrace and rooms you can enjoy the best views in Arcos de la Frontera! So make sure to sip a coffee in their restaurant or stay for a night!

Travel Tip:

After exploring Arcos de la Frontera you should consider visiting the nearby winery Bodega Tesalia. They offer guided tours and tastings on their property where they produce around 65.000 bottles of the finest red wine every year. Definitely a nice place to relax and enjoy after a sightseeing tour.

2. Bornos

Another beautiful town of the Pueblos Blancos is Bornos. I especially loved this one thanks to the palace in the center of the town, right next to the market square. First take a stroll through the Renaissance style palace garden with blooming Bougainvillea and orange trees, followed by a visit of the Castillo – Palacio de los Ribera. Ask the staff at the entrance to visit the rooftop – it is completely free and this spot offers the best view in town!

4. Olvera

If you’re visiting the Pueblos Blancos you have to see Olvera. It is one of the “bigger” white towns with different hotels and restaurants. But the main attraction is the Arabic Castle of Olvera and the Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación church right next to it. Both of them are located at the highest point of the city with amazing views over the area. It is especially magical during the golden evening light. You can visit the castle for a small entrance fee of 2,- EUR and find a wonderful photo spot while walking up the outdoor stairs to the top.

5. Other beautiful white towns of the Pueblos Blancos:

• Zahara de la Sierra – perched on a mountain with amazing views over the valley and a blue lake.
• Ubrique – The town has a beautiful main square with a colorful church. Ubrique is famous for being the capital of fine leather productions in Spain. Until today it is supplier to the world’s top brands and designers.

• Villaluengo del Rosario – A tiny village which is famous for its unique cemetery in the ruins of a church from 1722 which burnt down hundreds of years ago. Also make sure to check out the view from the “mirador” (view point) in the center of the village.

6. Natural Park Sierra Grazalema

Even though the Pueblos Blancos are mainly known for the picturesque white towns, the area also offers a stunning nature. Most towns are located in then Natural Park Sierra Grazalema which is a Biosphere reserve with impressive limestone mountain peaks and pine forests just as wild rivers flowing through canyons. If you’re an outdoor fan you will love hiking, climbing and bird watching in this impressive Natural Park.

Our two favorite activities were canyoning through the impressive landscape, including rappelling from rocks and jumping into waterfalls.

Another must do is a bicycle tour on the Via Verde de la Sierra which leads through the natural reserve Peñon de Zaframañon which is home of hundreds of griffon vultures. The path is ideal for individual hiking and biking tours while watching the huge birds flying around the rock formations.

How to get around the Pueblos Blancos?

The best way to explore the Pueblos Blancos and the whole area around the total of 19 white towns, is by car. This will give you the flexibility to visit several towns and different places during your trip. The next big airport is Seville from where you can rent a car and start your road trip.

How many days are ideal to visit the Pueblos Blancos?

Depending on how many different towns you are planning to visit and if you want to enjoy some hiking in the area as well – what I would highly recommend – I would say that 3-5 nights are ideal. Most towns are really small and you can visit two or more of them in one day.
Since you will most likely start and end your trip in Seville, if you travel to Spain by plane, a combination with a trip to this beautiful Spanish city would be the ideal plan!
