The popular island of Sardinia, located on the west coast of Italy, is not only the second largest in the country, but in the entire Mediterranean. Some even call Sardinia the Caribbean of the Mediterranean. No wonder, because its dreamy sandy beaches and turquoise waters are simply breathtakingly beautiful. The combination of dolce vita, diverse nature and idyllic bays truly makes Sardinia a top holiday destination.

A 7-day Road Trip is the perfect way to explore Sardinia. That’s why I’ve put together a one week Sardinia itinerary for you – with the best sights, tours, beaches and hidden gems. As always, you’ll find them all on a detailed map.

Sardinia Road Trip – a few important tips in advance:

• The best times to explore Sardinia by car are May – June and September – October. During this time, it is not as hot as in summer and there are significantly fewer tourists.
• A small car or SUV is best suited as a rental car to go around the island. Familiarise yourself with the park rules beforehand, as they can vary a lot between the north and south.
• You should book boat tours well in advance – especially for the Grotta di Nettuno, the Golfo di Orosei and La Maddalena.
• Don’t forget to take cash with you, as cards are often not accepted in smaller villages and remote areas.

My 7-Day Sardinia Road Trip Itinerary

Sardinia Day 1: Arrival in Cagliari & start of the trip

After landing at the international airport in Cagliari and picking up your hire car, you start your Sardinia road trip with your first breathtaking coastal drive towards Chia. The small village is located 48 kilometres south of Cagliari, nestled in a coastal area with beautiful beaches and crystal-clear water. The setting exudes true Caribbean flair. Between fine dunes full of fragrant greenery, you can relax wonderfully on the fine sandy beaches.

My Restaurant Tip:

For dinner, I recommend the Trattoria da Angelo in Domus de Maria. It is located just a few minutes from the Hilton Chia Laguna. Here you can enjoy authentic Sardinian specialities such as porceddu (suckling pig), fregola ai frutti di mare (roasted pasta with seafood) and seadas (honey dumplings with pecorino cheese).

The Hilton Chia Laguna impresses primarily with its fantastic pool and excellent spa area. There is also a shuttle service to the Spiaggia di Monte Cogoni – a picturesque sandy beach from where, with a bit of luck, you can even spot dolphins.

Sardinia Day 2: Along the Costa del Sud

The second day of my Sardinia itinerary takes you further along the panoramic coastal road along the Costa del Sud – with breathtaking views of beautiful bays and cliffs. I promise you won’t get enough of the idyllic sandy beaches that pass you by.

Stops you shouldn’t miss during your road trip:

• Tuerredda Beach – an absolute dream beach in Sardinia with shallow turquoise waters that are always calm. You really feel like you’re in the Caribbean here.
• Capo Spartivento – here you’ll find a lighthouse, which is one of the oldest still functioning on the island. From here you have a great view of the sea.
• Porto Pino – an atmospheric place with white, never-ending sand dunes and tranquil lagoons.

Your final stop for this day is Oristano. This historic, authentic Sardinian town is located on the west coast between picturesque, rocky bays and is perfect for your second overnight stay of your Sardinia itinerary. The province is not only surrounded by beaches, but also by the impressive mountains of Monte Ferru. And if you’re a night owl, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to get your money’s worth in Oristano.

Sardinia Day 3: Bosa – the colourful jewel of Sardinia

Today’s first destination on your Sardinia round trip is Bosa – one of the most beautiful small towns in Sardinia. Bosa may not be large (just under 8,000 inhabitants), but it is full of charm. You simply have to immerse yourself in this magical flair and let yourself be carried away by it. The historic town centre with its pretty alleyways, pastel-coloured houses and cute shops will cast a spell over you. It’s simply fun to stroll around here and stop every now and then to marvel.

My insider tips in Bosa:

• Visit Castello Malaspina – A walk of about half an hour takes you from Bosa’s old town centre up the Scalinata staircase, which is hung with roses, to Castello Malaspina. The castle was built at the beginning of the 12th century and offers a fantastic panoramic view.

Arriving in Alghero

We continue along the coast to Alghero. The lively little town, surrounded by a city wall, is a former Catalan enclave and is often referred to as Little Barcelona. You will surely love the picturesque harbour. Alghero is world-famous for its traditional red coral jewellery.

In the evening, I recommend the Alghero Sunset Sailing Aperitif Tour – a leisurely boat tour with an aperitif at sunset.

Sardinia Day 4: Beach time & Grotta di Nettuno

The morning of the fourth day of your Sardinia round trip by car can be spent relaxing on the Spiaggia di Maria Pia – an approx. 2-kilometre-long beach in Alghero with golden sand, bordered by a pine forest that provides shade.

Afterwards, you can take a boat tour or hike to the Grotta di Nettuno – an impressive stalactite cave with spectacular stalactites and stalagmites, accessible via a picturesque boat trip or an impressive staircase with 654 steps along the cliffs.

Later, you have the option of taking part in a wine tasting at the renowned Sella & Mosca winery, which I would definitely recommend if you are a wine lover.

After a short break, the journey continues towards the east coast with an overnight stay in Cala Gonone. This town on the east coast of central Sardinia is the perfect base for a boat tour to the best beaches in Sardinia the next morning!

• Sa Cuchina piccolo listeria enoteco – Here you can enjoy delicious homemade pasta, and traditional Sardinian classics such as Culurgiones (filled Pasta with potatoes and cheese served with tomato sauce). It is a very small restaurant run by a cute couple – so you might need to wait a bit for a table.

Sardinia Day 5: Golfo di Orosei Boat Tour & San Pantaleo

Start the day with a boat trip to the most beautiful beaches, the bluest water and hidden little caves. A boat is the best choice, as most of the beaches on the east coast can only be reached from the water or after a strenuous and steep hike – especially on the way back up the cliffs.

You will see unique white beaches with dreamlike blue water, for example:

• Pools of the Venus – a perfect spot to stop the boat and go for a swim in the bluest water
• Cala dei Gabbiani – an idyllic little bay with crystal-clear water
• Cala Mariolu – with rocks for cliff jumping and also crystal-clear water
• Cala Luna – with caves at the beach which are ideal to hide from the intense sun
• Cala Goloritze – the most famous beach with its iconic rock formation

I highly recommend booking a private boat (with or without skipper) instead of booking a tour on a big ship with countless other people – It’s a whole different experience! I have linked you the exact tour we booked below!

The tours usually end in the late afternoon so make sure to pack enough water and snacks during your boat trip as there are barely any places to buy drinks or food at the beaches.

San Pantaleo Mountain Village

After a day on the water, continue your road trip to San Pantaleo. I absolutely loved this tiny village surrounded by the mountains with the cutest market square where you find little cafes and local shops with sustainable fashion. It is an absolute hidden gem in Sardinia!

Sunset and early mornings are the best time to explore the village which is why I highly recommend spending one or two nights here.

My hotel tips in San Pantaleo:

My restaurant tip in San Pantaleo: 

• Grab your morning coffee and, ideally, a shakarata (iced shaken espresso) or the decadent ciccolata calda (thick hot chocolate) at one of the cafés around the main square this is also where you find the majority of restaurants for lunch or dinner

Insider Tip:

If you happen to come to San Pantaleo during a Thursday morning, visit the Thursday artisan market with local ceramics, crafts, and delicacies – it’s a highlight in San Pantaleo.

Sardinia Day 6: La Maddalena Archipelago & Olbia

On this day of your 7-day round trip Sardinia by car, you will head towards Palau – a pretty town in the north of Sardinia. From here, you can also embark on unforgettable tours. Treat yourself to a boat or catamaran tour through the La Maddalena archipelago – one of the most beautiful island groups in the Mediterranean, with dreamy bays and turquoise-blue water. You will find a true snorkelling paradise among the more than 60 islets.

If you’re in the mood for a visit at a unique winery I suggest a Gallura winery tour with a tasting of excellent local wines. You’ll be amazed by the flavour and ambience. → Linked here!

Sardinia Day 7: Dolphin watching & Cagliari

In the morning, I recommend a dolphin watching tour by kayak. Not far from Olbia is the small fishing village of Golfo Aranci, from where the tour starts. The village alone is worth a visit, with its pretty harbour, friendly town centre and, of course, its dream beaches. The tour leads to the island of Tavolara where dolphins are seen daily nearby a fishing farm.

The last section of your Sardinia round trip by car takes you back to the capital, Cagliari. If you still have time before your return flight, we recommend a stroll through the old town. The Bastione di Saint Remy, Cagliari’s largest rooftop terrace, is one of the city’s most beautiful vantage points with views of the sea and the old town. Here you can enjoy a coffee under the palm trees in one of the small cafés. Another tip is the historic Castello neighbourhood. Stroll through the narrow streets with colourful houses, impressive palazzi and charming little squares. You absolutely must make a stop at Santa Maria Cathedral!

You can plan your return flight for the evening or spend another night in Cagliari.

7 days Sardinia round trip by car – My thoughts:

Sardinia really is a fabulous dream island. You could stay here for much longer than just 7 days, as there is so much more to discover. Some people also call Sardinia the island of freedom. You can really feel this when you’re traveling along the coastal roads and simply taking in the fantastic views of the beaches and the sea.

The Cinque Terre National Park is located in eastern Liguria – a region of Italy that stretches like a crescent along the north-west coast. Framed by mountains and sea, picturesque like something out of a picture book, Liguria is one of the most spectacular stretches of coastline in Italy and is therefore a very popular holiday destination, even with the locals. It is said that Christopher Columbus prepared for his great crossing here.

The Cinque Terre is probably the most famous part of the Ligurian coast. These are the five former fishing villages of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore – nestled in the breathtaking cliffs. They truly seem like a fairy tale from a bygone era with their pretty, colourful facades and beguiling alleyways that simply invite you to stroll and marvel.

In my article, I would like to introduce you to the five villages of the Cinque Terre and their best sights and, as usual, include my personal tips. At the end you will find a Cinque Terre map with all the spots.

The best travel time for the Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre and its popular sights attract millions of visitors every year like a magnet, even in the low season. I recommend that you avoid the summer months for a visit. The best time to visit is spring, with its magnificent flowers, and autumn, with its enchanting colours. The temperatures are also pleasant during these seasons.

How many days are ideal?

If you are a hiking enthusiast, it is perfectly possible to visit all five villages in one day via the Sentiero Azzurro hiking trail. However, if you want to make your stay in the Cinque Terre more relaxed, I would recommend two days for the best sights in Cinque Terre.

How to Get Around Cinque Terre

Hiking trail:

The five villages stretch for around 12 kilometres and are connected by the famous Sentiero Azzurro hiking trail – which means blue trail. This trail is known for its fantastic views of the sea and the villages.

Time: You should plan around 7-8 hours for the entire route on foot and without breaks. But of course, the many great viewpoints and exploring the individual villages are what make the route so appealing. You should therefore split the route over a full day, or even better, two days, so that you have enough time to marvel and enjoy.

Cost: A ticket – the Cinque Terre Trekking Card – must be purchased for the hiking trail. Depending on the season, it costs 7.50 euros or 15 euros per day and can be purchased at all access points to the hiking trail.

Car & Train:

In principle, it is possible to reach all places by car. However, I recommend that you use the train connection. Firstly, the trains run very frequently and secondly, the journey alone is a great experience.

By car, you would have to make long detours due to the unfavourable and narrow road connections. It is therefore worth parking your car near one of the villages and then travelling on by train or on foot.

Cost: The Cinque Terre Treno MS Card one-day train ticket for adults costs between €19.50 and €32.50, depending on the season. If you want to explore the area for two days, the 2-day ticket costs between €34 and €59 (valid for two consecutive days).

Included in the ticket: unlimited travel on the regional train between La Spezia and Levanto and entry to the Cinque Terre National Park, including use of the hiking trails.

By Boat:

In addition, four of the five villages (except Corniglia) can be reached by a small passenger boat several times a day. This allows you to enjoy a very special view of the Cinque Terre and its fantastic sights from the sea.

Cinque Terre Highlights: The best sights

1. Monterosso al Mare

Monterosso al Mare is the northernmost of the five villages and also the largest. It is also the only one with a sandy beach. The approximately 1.5-kilometre-long beach is stunningly beautiful with its breathtaking scenery, fine sand and crystal-clear water – one of the most popular attractions in the Cinque Terre. Here you can swim and relax in the sun, but also go diving or snorkelling. There are also cosy cafés, restaurants and bars on the beach, from where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the sea.

The old town centre of Monterosso al Mare is also beautiful with its narrow streets. A special sight is the 13th century church of St. Giovanni Battista with its striped façade. It’s worth taking a look inside – you’ll also find the striped pattern inside the church. The statue of St. Francis of Assisi towers high above the town, in the immediate vicinity of a Franciscan monastery. From there, you will be rewarded with a marvellous view of Monterosso al Mare.

2. Vernazza

For most visitors, Vernazza is the most beautiful of the five villages and therefore probably the most popular attraction in the Cinque Terre. The view of its beautiful harbour from above alone is breathtaking. The colourful houses and the turquoise blue water will enchant you. And it’s true, you’ll find the best photo opportunities here. Take a relaxed stroll along the small fishing harbour, enjoy the lively atmosphere on the market square and let yourself drift along the pretty houses. Stop off at one of the cute cafés with a view of the glittering sea.

Above Vernazza, the old tower of a former castle rises into the sky like an eternal landmark of the town – another sight of the Cinque Terre that you shouldn’t miss. It’s worth climbing up to its foot as the view is simply fantastic.

My favorite photo spots in Vernazza

My favourite photo spot: the Vernazza View Point. It’s easy to find on the hiking trail that leads from Vernazza to the neighbouring village of Monterosso. The view is breathtaking. Even if you are travelling by train, you can walk the short distance to the viewpoint along the hiking trail. To do so, you must pass an access point to the Sentiero Azzurro Trail and show your Cinque Terre Trekking Card.

3. Corniglia

The highest village of Corniglia differs from its sisters in that it has neither a harbour nor access to the sea, as it was built on a plateau – a sight in the Cinque Terre that is also worth a visit. Corniglia is located in the heart of the Cinque Terre and is in no way inferior to the others with its colourful houses where you can see laundry dangling happily in the wind. There is a pretty church in the centre and at lunchtime the streets are bustling with life. It is said to have the best ice cream in the Cinque Terre. Even if you can’t sip your coffee by the sea here, it’s fun to immerse yourself in the unique flair.

And of course, Corniglia looks just as picturesque from above as the other four villages. As you stroll through the village, you will inevitably come to one of the viewpoints from which you can admire Corniglia.

4. Manarola

The view over the pretty fishing harbour to the colourful houses is so fantastic that you simply can’t get enough of it. You can see just how enclosed Manarola is – as if in a cauldron surrounded by vineyards. Incidentally, viticulture was one of the most important sources of livelihood for the inhabitants of the Cinque Terre for centuries. Until the 1960s, over 1200 hectares of the steep slopes were cultivated by hand. Today, only around 100 hectares are still cultivated. The work as a winegrower is no longer as hard as it used to be, as you will find so-called mini cogwheel railways everywhere on the vineyards, which are used to transport the grapes. A particularly fine wine that only comes from this region is Sciacchetrà – one of the best liqueur wines in the world, made from a grape variety whose grapes are still traditionally stomped with the feet.

If you are a fan of Italian cuisine, it might be worth buying the typical Ligurian pesto that is made here. The olive oil used to make it (from olives grown exclusively in the Cinque Terre, of course) is mild and gives the Pesto Genovese its unmistakably magical flavor.

I highly recommend visiting the famous Nessun Dorma restaurant, which is a sight in itself in the Cinque Terre. Here you can enjoy a fantastic traditional meal with an incredible view of Manarola. However, you should book in advance due to its popularity.

My tip: One level above the restaurant is my favourite photo spot in Manarola and probably even along the entire coast: a cemetery with a fantastic view over the sea and the colourful houses. If the cemetery is closed off (I’ve read online that this is sometimes the case), you can enjoy an almost identical view from the Manarola Overlook Viewpoint.

5. Riomaggiore

Romantic, picture-perfectly beautiful, inviting you to dream – that’s Riomaggiore. The small fishing harbour is one of the best sights in the Cinque Terre. From here you have a wonderful view of the colourful houses carved into the rocks and built on top of each other. It is a popular meeting place, especially before sunset. You can even climb onto large boulders in the sea to enjoy an even better view. You’ll be amazed at how colourful the facades of the houses are until the sun has finally sunk behind the sea. Round off the evening in one of the cosy restaurants, which also offer unforgettable views of the sea and the Cinque Terre coastline.

The magical Cinque Terre – my résumé

You may have already decided while reading my article: ‘I absolutely have to see the Cinque Terre with its unique sights!’ And I can only encourage you to fulfil this wish. For me, this indescribably dreamlike region of Italy is definitely one of the most beautiful places in the world that I have ever visited. It really feels like you’re travelling back in time.

‘Rome is the most beautiful city in the world’ – you’ll often hear this when a Roman talks lovingly about their city. Rome is also known as the eternal city, as it can look back on a long and impressive history. To this day, it shines in the centre of Italy as a hub for art and history and as a symbol of antiquity. Did you know that all the ancient sights and ruins you can marvel at above ground in Rome only make up a fraction of Rome’s rich history? Time and again, entire epochs have been buried and new ones built on top of them – so often that entire eras lie hidden beneath today’s Rome. When is the best time to visit Rome?

If you can, you should avoid the summer months to visit Rome. Firstly because of the heat and secondly because of the countless tourists who literally overrun the city during the summer holidays. Spring and autumn are best for exploring the city in pleasant temperatures and soaking up Rome’s indescribable flair in one of the countless street cafés.

How many days are ideal for Rome’s sights and insider tips?

The more the better. There are countless museums, sights and restaurants waiting to be discovered. But a long weekend of three days is ideal for squeezing in some of the best sights and even a few insider tips in Rome. This is why I created the ultimate 3 days in Rome itinerary for you!

Three days in Rome – the ultimate itinerary with the best sights & insider tips:

Rome Itinerary – Day 1: Ancient Rome and Colosseum

Sunrise:

Start the day at the Colosseum – probably the most famous sight in Rome. Due to the fantastic light, this is an ideal time for great photos. There are also fewer people out in the early morning. Of course, it’s never really empty in the centre of Rome, but there are plenty of great perspectives. I have marked my favourite photo spots on my map.

Morning:

The Colosseum, built between 72 and 80 AD, could seat up to 70,000 people in its day, making it the largest ancient amphitheatre in the world. I recommend you start with the Colosseum Underground Tour to discover the Colosseum from below – absolutely worth it!

Midday:

Explore the Forum Romanum and Palatine Hill, on which Rome was founded. The Forum Romanum is one of the most famous sights in Rome and provides a good insight into life at that time. Rome was founded in 753 BC by the brothers Romulus and Remus, who, according to legend, were raised by a she-wolf. There are plenty of restaurants around the Palatine Hill where you can take a short lunch break.

Afternoon:

Afterwards, I recommend a walk to Capitoline Square, which is still the central square on the Capitoline Hill in Rome today and a European World Heritage sight. It was completely remodelled by Michelangelo in the 16th century. The star-shaped pavement and the bronze equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius are characteristic features. You should definitely not miss this sight in Rome. 

Continue to the Pantheon – an ancient temple that was later consecrated as a church. The huge dome is particularly impressive and looks like the apple of an eye from above and was the largest free-standing dome in the world for over 1000 years. The Pantheon is an impressive sight which you definitely have to put on your three days in Rome itinerary.

Afterwards, you can walk to Piazza Navona, which is considered the defining square of Baroque Rome. It is home to some of Rome’s most famous fountains, such as the Fountain of the Four Rivers. Almost 2000 years ago, an arena with space for around 15,000 people stood here, where athletics competitions and horse races took place. From a bird’s eye view, the shape of a stadium can still be recognised today.

Insider tip: Make a stop at the Galleria Doria Pamphilj, a beautiful palace with works of art by Caravaggio & Velázquez.

Evening:

Now it’s time for a relaxed Italian dinner at Roscioli – THE top address for Roman pasta. The restaurant is particularly famous for its cacio e pepe!

Before or after your dinner, I recommend an evening stroll to the famous Trevi Fountain – one of the most beautiful sights in Rome! Due to its popularity, the baroque masterpiece from the 18th century is always well visited – but in the late evening (or just before sunrise in the early morning) it is usually a little quieter.

Rome Itinerary – Day 2: Vatican and Prati

Morning:

Off to Vatican City – the smallest state in the world, right in the heart of Rome. Who hasn’t seen the stunning Basilica of St. Peter (also known as St. Peter’s Basilica) or the Sistine Chapel with the famous fresco by Michelangelo, where the cardinals meet for the conclave – two of the most popular sights in Rome. To save a lot of time, get a skip-the-line entry to the Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel.

Noon:

Afterwards, I recommend you visit St Peter’s Basilica. It was built over the presumed tomb of St Peter, the apostle of Jesus and the first pope. Michelangelo designed the dome based on the Pantheon – its height is a whopping 136.5 metres. Climbing the dome gives you one of the best views over Rome.

Afternoon:

Enjoy a stroll through the elegant Prati district – an ideal place to shop or relax in one of the cozy cafés.

Insider tip: The Passeggiata del Gianicolo is a beautiful and quiet promenade away from the tourist crowds, from where you have a fantastic view over Rome.

Evening:

Food tour by night through Rome  – The tour is perfect for enjoying various Roman specialities and tasting wine.

Rome Itinerary – Day 3: Trastevere and the alternative Rome

Morning:

Discover another top attraction and real insider tip in Rome: Trastevere, Rome’s most charming district with colourful alleyways and historic churches. Centuries ago, the working class lived in the houses that line the narrow, cobblestone streets. Today, the picturesque alleyways are a hotspot for artists and young people and are free of cars. Definitely try the delicious cuisine that awaits you in the inviting restaurants in this neighborhood.

Insider tip: I highly recommend visiting the Villa Farnesina – an underrated gem with Renaissance frescoes by Raphael and works by other renowned 16th century artists. The theme was Greek mythology. It is an overwhelming feeling to stand in front of these unique works of art and look at them.

Lunch:

For lunch, you should stop at Da Enzo al 29 – a small trattoria with legendary carbonara & artichokes. It’s worth coming here for lunch right at the opening time at 12:00 noon. As the restaurant is also very popular with the locals, it fills up quickly.

Afternoon:

Use the afternoon for a walk along the banks of the Tiber to the Aventine Hill. In the Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta, you can get a secret view of St. Peter’s Basilica through the keyhole of the Knights of Malta at the gateway to the Order of Malta.

Evening:

Enjoy a last evening with aperitivo & dinner at the Taverna Trilussa. Here, homemade pasta is served in pans directly at the table. The restaurant is very popular, so it’s worth making a reservation. There may be longer waiting times for food at the weekend. But an aperitivo is a good way to pass the time.

Another special insider tip in Rome: Parco della Caffarella

If you feel like immersing yourself in nature a little more, the Parco della Caffarella is particularly amazing. It is located around 25 kilometres south-east of the city centre and is part of the large Parco Regionale Dell’ Appia Antica, through which the Via Appia Antica runs – the first Roman road in history. If you happen to be there at lunchtime, you may come across a flock of sheep. Sheep are as much a part of Rome as good food and music. Their milk is essential for Roman cuisine, as it is used to make the legendary pecorino – a hard cheese that is an indispensable ingredient in the Roman pasta Cacio e Pepe.

Rome in three days – My résumé

I once heard that Rome is like a gigantic open-air museum. I can only confirm this and I wonder how much time you would have to spend in Rome to really see all the sights and insider tips at least once. I was overwhelmed by the monumental evidence of Roman history, but also by the important works of art that I was able to admire over the three days. I think Rome has a lot of potential for a revisit, not least because of the fantastic cuisine.

Typical are their bizarre peaks up to 3000 metres high with steep, lush green ridges that seem to protect the beautiful, deeply enclosed valleys and mountain lakes.

September and October are the best months for hiking, as the summer ends late and temperatures are still around 20 degrees Celsius. It’s not just the weather that is perfect for hiking at this time of the year, but also the colourful landscape which autumn paints. No. 4 – Cinque Terre & Portofino – a top travel destination in Italy

Cinque Terre

On the rugged Italian Riviera, there is a 12 kilometre stretch of coastline known as the Cinque Terre, which translates as Five Lands. This refers to five picturesque villages with a fairytale-like charm. It is wonderful to stroll through the small alleyways between cute, colourful houses or sit comfortably in one of the cafés and simply gaze over the turquoise blue water.

The names of the five villages are:

• Corniglia
• Manarola
• Riomaggiore

The Cinque Terre is best explored in two days with an overnight stay in one of the five small villages. However, it is better to leave your own car outside the national park, as it’s impossible to drive on the small roads and alleys. Instead take the train or the hiking trail that connects the Cinque Terre. The entire walking route takes around 6-7 hours in total and can therefore be ideally divided into several stages, with breaks in the villages and at viewpoints (more on this under ‘My tips’).

Portofino

Around 70 kilometres away from the Cinque Terre is the Ligurian village of Portofino – a former fishing village with a beautiful harbour where you can almost always marvel at the yachts that sometimes belong to celebrities who like to anchor here. During your stay, you should definitely take a stroll along the world-famous Piazzetta Martiri dell’Òlivetta. You can enjoy great food in the stylish restaurants and have a fantastic view of the marvelous backdrop.

Towering cliffs behind rugged beaches characterise the typical image of the Amalfi Coast. During a holiday, it is definitely worth exploring several places to experience the full beauty of the Amalfi Coast.

As already mentioned, the Amalfi Coast is located near Naples. You should definitely not miss the legendary city on your trip. According to a myth, Odysseus sailed in the dangerous waters off Naples and was bewitched by the sirens. However, he was able to escape them by tying himself to the mast. Naples is simply beautiful with its marvellous location at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. 

When is the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast & Naples?

The Amalfi Coast is a popular holiday destination not only for tourists but also for locals. You should therefore avoid the summer holidays. Late spring and the first months of autumn are best. You can swim and stroll through the villages in pleasant temperatures. It’s also not so hot if you want to explore Naples.

My tips for the Amalfi Coast

• the famous town of Positano, which was built on a rock, with the beautiful Positano Beach, which you should definitely visit at sunset
• Amalfi – a town absolutely worth seeing on the coast of the same name
• The cute little village of Ravello – for me one of the most beautiful on the Amalfi Coast – is located in the mountains and offers you a fantastic view over the entire coast.
• The island of Capri is only about 50-80 minutes away from the Amalfi Coast by ferry.
• Pompeii – very close to the Amalfi Coast. Probably the most famous archaeological site in the world, it was buried metres deep in 79 AD during a devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius and only discovered by chance in the middle of the 18th century.

My tips for Naples

• You should definitely take a stroll through the beautiful historic centre and enjoy the view of Mount Vesuvius from one of the many cafés.
• Naples Cathedral with its partly gilded coffered ceiling in the nave 
• the National Archaeological Museum, where you will find artefacts from Pompeii, among other things
• the Certosa di San Martino monastery, from where you have a breathtaking view over the city

Welcome to Lefay Resort & Spa Lago di Garda – or as I like to call it: Wellness Heaven! A complex which towers elegantly over Lake Garda like a royal castle. The resort is so perfectly integrated into the surrounding landscape that you have the feeling of floating in the clouds. In this hotel review I tell you why the Lefay Resort & Spa Lago di Garda is for me the most beautiful hotel on Lake Garda.

My Review of the Lefay Resort & Spa Lago di Garda

Location & Accessibility

The Lefay Lago di Garda is located – as the name suggests – on the beautiful Lake Garda in the north of Italy. Specifically, in Gargnano on the Riviera dei Limoni. The best way to reach the resort is by car. From Munich it is a 5-hour drive to the Lefay. The last part of the journey by car is quite adventurous: Due to the high location above Lake Garda, quite a few meters of altitude must be climbed by car. But it’s worth it: from the entrance gate it’s only a few meters, past cypresses to the reception at the lobby.

Fun Fact: The Lefay has its own helipad – so if driving is too long for you, you can also arrive by helicopter.

The concept of the Lefay Resort & Spa Lago di Garda

As I have already hinted, the name Lefay stands for a wellness paradise for me. We already stayed at Lefay Dolomiti a few months ago and were so in love after our visit that we couldn’t wait to visit the second resort on Lake Garda.

Wellness, relaxation and well-being is at the heart of the Lefay philosophy, which runs through the entire resort. This is characterized not only by the 4,300 m² spa area, but also by culinary delights and elegant moments of well-being. The most diverse levels of wellness are covered – since we all have different perceptions of what pure relaxation means to us.

The Suites at the Lefay Resort & Spa Lago di Garda

All suites at Lefay were completely renovated, modernized and refurnished in 2021. This gives them a very modern and at the same time cozy ambience with top facilities. Normal rooms do not exist in all the Lefay resorts. Even the “smallest” room category are the 50 m² Junior Suites. After that, there is no limit to the size and luxury level of the suites.

Sky Suite

We stayed in a heavenly Sky Suite. With 134 m², this suite category offers not only a lot of space but also privacy. The name “Sky Suite” comes from the height and the view of the suites. The side which looks onto Lake Garda is completely windowed and surrounded by a large terrace. Especially when the clouds hang a little lower over Lake Garda, you have the feeling of being in heaven.

The suite consists of a total of three rooms, which are arranged one after the other: A living area with minibar and separate chamber for suitcases and jackets. Behind it is the bedroom with toilet, walk-in closet and a dreamlike bed, from which you look directly over Lake Garda. The view upon waking up was simply stunning! We slept with the blinds open every night to marvel at the sunrise over the water in the morning.

At the end of the suite is the huge bathroom, whose highlight, besides a rain shower and freestanding bathtub, is the private glass sauna. A sliding door leads from the bathroom out onto the terrace, where a private Jacuzzi awaited us! It is located in the middle of the terrace, but still protected from outside glances. Thus, you can enjoy maximum privacy and enjoy the view undisturbed.

Wellness

The Lefay is the perfect retreat to relax and simply unwind. Both indoors and outdoors are numerous wellness oases.

Outside, the infinity swimming pool looks out over the beautiful panorama of Lake Garda. However, the most popular is the heated wellness pool, with various aquatherapy massage jets. The pool leads from the indoor area to the outside and is heated to a pleasant temperature. Thus, it can be used at any time of the year. Additionally, there is a large whirlpool outside, which is partially covered by a “cave”.

Indoors, the wellness area is the heart of the resort and goes over several floors! Here are my personal highlights:

• The Adults Only Spa area with the panorama sauna – it is made of glass and offers fantastic views. Great aroma infusions take place here several times a day.
• The Salt Cave – as in the Lefay in the Dolomites, there is a cozy grotto with a salt lake in which you can float weightlessly – similar to the Dead Sea.
• The Spa treatment area with couple suites – The Lefay Spa method combines ancient knowledge from Chinese medicine with the latest scientific research and treatment methods. We reserved a partner treatment consisting of an aroma bath, a Bamboo massage, snacks and relaxation. The Couple Suites are decorated according to specific themes. Overall, they are very cozy, however I found the newer massage suites at Lefay Dolomiti to be even nicer.
• For those who don’t want to miss out on enough exercise during their vacation, there is a top-equipped and glassed-in gym with a view.
• The Lefay Spa Shop – This is where the in-house produced care and beauty products are sold. Some of these can also be found in the suites as amenities. My husband in particular is a big fan of the Lefay Spa series.

Breakfast & Restaurants

Indulgence plays a central role in the Lefay concept. And it doesn’t matter if you prefer to eat consciously and lightly, or if you prefer to treat yourself – you’ll find everything here! The products used in the two restaurants at Lefay Lago di Garda come largely from the region and the dishes change with the season.

La Limonaia

The main restaurant La Limonaia serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast consists of a buffet with a live cooking station for hot food. I especially loved the juicer, which allowed me to create a fresh juice daily. However, for a hotel of this class, I would have loved an additional à la carte menu with hot dishes.

Lunch and dinner are served exclusively à la carte. What I find fantastic is that in addition to the set dinner menu, there is a daily changing menu, as well as a new spa menu every day with light, conscious food. This way, the dinner never gets boring, even during a longer visit. The dishes here are locally inspired, with a unique touch. Both in terms of taste and price the dinner at La Limonaia was absolutely high class.

Gramen

For a special dinner, the gourmet restaurant Gramen is the right choice. Here the finest seven-course menus are served, and all without meat! There is both a vegetarian / vegan menu, as well as one with fish. However, dishes can also be ordered à la carte. We opted for the vegetarian menu with wine accompaniment and were very surprised at how varied and flavorful the dishes were prepared. Even my husband, who usually prefers meat, ate all the dishes and enjoyed this special evening very much. The ambience and the first-class service put the crown on the whole experience!

Lounge Bar & Pool Bar

There is a bar both by the pool and in the lobby for drinks and snacks. During our visit in October, the bar was already closed due to the cooler weather, but the lounge bar in the lobby was in full operation! It’s the ideal place for a leisurely aperitif in the evening or a “nightcap” before bed.

Résumé of our stay at the Lefay Lago di Garda

I have already mentioned it, but I can only emphasize it again and again: The Lefay Resorts are dreamlike wellness resorts for the ultimate relaxation. Especially for couples who want to enjoy a romantic getaway and tranquility, it is a paradise.

While the entire resort is not designed as an Adults Only Resort – only some spa areas & the Panorama Sauna are exclusively for adults – we hardly saw any children during our visit. The concept is primarily designed for adults.

Together with the first-class food and service, as well as the gorgeous panorama that can be enjoyed from every corner of the resort, Lefay Resort & Spa Lago di Garda is for me the most beautiful hotel on Lake Garda and an ideal resort for a special occasion and to escape from everyday life.

April until May and End of August until beginning of October do mostly still have nice temperatures & you can really enjoy the atmosphere without experiencing the charming little towns and beaches super packed!

To see the best places along the Amalfi Coast, three days are ideal! The destination can easily be combined as a stop during a longer Italy trip in combination with Naples or other destinations.

A famous thing to do is to combine a trip to the Amalfi Coast with the visit of the nearby island Capri. for this I would extend the time for another two days.

How to reach & get around the Amalfi Coast?

The Amalfi Coast doesn’t have its own airport. But there are several ways to reach the beautiful Italian coast line which all have their plus and minus points. That’s why you have to consider for yourself which mode of transport is the best for you!

• Arriving by airplane: A famous way to explore the Amalfi Coast is flying to Naples and renting a car at the airport or in the city, in case you want to spend one or tow nights in Naples as well. The ride from Naples to the Amalfi Coast takes less then 1,5 hours. Having a car at the Amalfi Coast gives you the most freedom but finding a parking space in some of the most famous towns like Positano is quite a struggle or pretty expensive if you park in one of the garages (which is usually your only possibility).
• Taking your own car: Of course it is also possible to travel to the Amalfi Coast with your own car or camper van – which makes sense if you’re planning to do a bigger Italy road trip. But keep in mind that the street along the coast line which connects all small towns and beaches, is one of the most narrow ones I’ve ever seen! That’s why we decided renting a small car is a better idea than taking our own bigger one.
• Reaching the Amalfi Coast via public transport: A convenient way to travel to the Amalfi coast if you want to avoid renting a car is taking a train from the central station in Naples  to Salerno (all the way in the East of the Amalfi Coast) or Sorrento (the West end of the coastline). Here you change to the public bus which connects all towns along the Amalfi Coast. Taking the bus skips the struggle of finding a parking lot or dealing with the narrow streets yourself. The minus point is that it usually takes longer to reach the best places to see at the Amalfi coast and not all of them have a direct bus stop.

Where to stay at the Amalfi Coast?

This question depends on two questions: Do you want to stay in the center of the best places to see or rather a quiet area & how big is your budget for your trip to the Amalfi coast?

We decided to split our stay: For the first two nights we booked a small hotel in San Michele which is located right between Positano and Ravello. We took this destination since is it first much more affordable, it offers easy & free to parking and it’s a good starting point for a road trip to explore the Amalfi Coast.

For our third and last night we booked a hotel in the heart of Positano which was more pricey and we had to leave pur car in one of the price intensive parking garages but we were just a few steps away from the famous Positano Beach. This gave us the chance to go there super early in the morning and take photos without other people.

The best places to visit at the Amalfi Coast

Positano

A must see destination which simply can’t be missed in this Amalfi Coast Travel Guide is Positano – YES it is THE most well known town but for a good reason. Two things surprised me during our first visit in Positano: First, it is much smaller than I always expected it to be and second, there are quite a lot of stairs which makes exploring the town to a little workout.

You should spend at least one morning and one evening here. We tried to avoid the midday and afternoon since this is when the town is obviously the most crowded. Simply stroll around the cute alleys with shops and restaurants and don’t forget to check out the famous Positano beach.

During sunrise it will empty and you’ll barely see any other person which is a great time to shoot. After the sun has been risen over the horizon, the town will be in the sunlight. A great perspective to shoot is either from the sea itself or at the cliff all the way to the left side of the beach which gives you a great overlook over the colorful umbrellas with Positano in the background.

In case you’re planning to relax at the beach during the day: Most part of the beach is covered with sunbeams and umbrellas which have to be rented but on the left side you’ll find a small part which is a free public beach as well.

Tip: Make sure to come back to the beach for at least one evening and watch the sunset. When the sky turns darker and the lights of Positano turn on, it creates a magical atmosphere! After taking your photos sip a cocktail in one of the beach bars and fully enjoy this beautiful place.

Amalfi

Yes there is a town called Amalfi along the Amalfi coast and it is absolutely worth a visit. Merged between the mountains and the sea with colorful houses it is super photogenic and greta for a midday or afternoon stroll. Make sure to stop by the Piazza Dante, its fountains and the Amalfi Duomo. The best spot to overlook and take photos from the city is the boat deck (where the ferry to Capri island starts).

If you’re coming from Positano or any other location the in the West, Amalfi is located just a few minutes before Ravello which is one of my favorite places along the Amalfi Coast.

Ravello

If there is one place that simply can’t be missed in this Amalfi Coast Travel Guide, it is Ravello. It is located on top of the mountains with a stunning view over the coastline which makes it to the perfect place to watch the sunset and enjoy a breathtaking view over the Amalfi Coastline. Due to this location, Ravello is the best reached by car, which saves you a lot of uphill walking.

The most beautiful spot for is located in the Villa Cimbrone, an old villa dating back to the 11th century which got renewed in the early 1900’s. Today it is a hotel, restaurant, famous wedding location and garden for visitors. It is open to the public from 9am to 8.30pm but keep in mind that the last entrance is at 8pm. Tickets cost 7 EUR per person but are absolutely worth it!
You’ll get the “million dollar view” from the terrace of infinity – which is a very fitting name if you ask me – at the very end of the garden. I’m speaking of a panoramic view over the Amalfi Coast which can’t be found anywhere else!  But after you took your photos and videos definitely plan more time to simply wander around the wonderful garden with many romantic spots.

Fiordo di Furore – one of the best places to see at the Amalfi Coast

For a refreshing swim and to see one of the best places at the Amalfi Coast make sure to stop by the Fiordo di Furore. This little beach with emerald green water can easily be reached if you park your car close to the small bridge which goes right over it or take the “Fiordo di Furore” bus stop. You’ll see a little stairway leading down to the beach while the beautiful view is already revealing. If you would like to take photos or simply enjoy the beach in a quiet atmosphere you should either go early in the morning or shortly before sunset.

Nearby places at the Amalfi Coast which are worth a visit:

The Amalfi Coast is undoubtedly one of the most iconic destinations in Italy. If you’re planning to visit the beautiful coastline you should consider extending your time to visit these places as well, which are all located close to the Amalfi Coast:

• Capri: (50-80 min ferry ride from the Amalfi Coast) We haven’t done this ourselves due to limited time but definitely have it on our list for the next time: From Positano or Amalfi, take a boat tour to the beautiful island Capri. It is famous for its ‘blue grotto’ and iconic rock formations just as a lovely old town.

•  Sorrento: (35 mins car ride from the Amalfi Coast) The home of Limoncello and the next bigger city close to the Amalfi Coast. Here you’ll find a beautiful old town as well which invites you to stroll around and have dinner in one of the many restaurants. Must do’s are visiting a Limoncello Factory for a tasting and enjoying the evening atmosphere at Sorrento Beach.
• Pompeii: (1hr car ride from the Amalfi Coast) Not only a must see for history lovers! The town has been covered in ash and lava for around 1700 years after the Vesuvius unexpectedly erupted in 79 AD. Today you can visit the Parco Archeologico where you can wander along the very well preserved streets of Pompeii with houses, a theatre, statues, … it feels like stepping back in time
• Naples: (1,5 hrs car ride from the Amalfi Coast): If you’re planning to visit the Amalfi Coast, Naples will most likely be your start and end point since this is where you find the next airport. So why not spending a night or two to explore the city! If the beautiful old town and the view over the Vesuvius haven’t convinced you already, the famous Pizza Napoli surely will! This is where we had one of the best Pizza in Italy – and even in the whole world!

Extra Tip: Hop on a boat

Seeing the stunning Amalfi Coast from the water is a dream coming true. I highly recommend to go on a boat cruise to sail along the most beautiful paces along the Amalfi Coast: Such as the colorful villages, the Fiori di Furore Bridge and the impressive cliffs. All that while soaking in the sunshine and being surrounded by the blue water of the Mediterranean – that’s the Dolce Vita!

How to hike the Tre Cime di Lavaredo in the Dolomites

When is the best month and time to go?

For the most enjoyable experience, it’s best to hike the Tre Cime di Lavaredo during the summer months. We have been mid June and still spotted a few spots with snow but luckily the trail has been completely free of ice . However, if you visit in late May or early June, be prepared for some snowy patches that might make the hike more challenging. After the summer months keep in mind that starting from late September, the mountain huts tend to close. Therefore, the optimal time to explore the Tre Cime di Lavaredo is from June until September.

One of the unique aspects of this destination is that you don’t necessarily have to arrive super early to enjoy it in peace. Opting for an afternoon hike allows you to avoid the crowds that tend to gather in the morning and midday. With fewer people around, you’ll have more space to take in the mesmerizing views of the three peaks bathed in sunlight. In the morning, the lighting creates a backlight effect from most perspective which isn’t ideal for photos. Moreover, if you’re an avid drone flyer, the reduced foot traffic during the afternoon hike increases the opportunity to capture stunning aerial footage of the area.

How to get to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo?

The majestic Tre Cime di Lavaredo are located in the heart of the Drei Zinnen Nature Park in South Tyrol. If you’re traveling by car and wish to reach the closest parking lot, simply search for the mountain hut Rifugio Auronzo on Google Maps. This will guide you directly to the desired destination. Alternatively, there is a public shuttle bus available that takes you to the starting point via the Strada Panoramica delle Tre Cime di Lavaredo. However, having your own car provides you with greater flexibility and convenience during your journey.

What are the toll fees?

To access the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, there is a toll road that leads to the parking lot. The prices for the toll are as follows:

• 30,00€ per car
• 20,00€ per motorbike
• 45,00€ per camper van. 

The toll station operates 24/7 and features electronic gates for nighttime entry. It’s important to be aware that the ticket price covers the full day of purchase until midnight, EXCEPT when entering the gate after 7 pm. In this case, the ticket will be valid for the following day as well.

For those seeking to start their hike to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo or the Cadini di Misurnia viewpoint during sunrise, the flexible entry policy after 7 pm offers an excellent opportunity. If you choose to camp overnight, you can do so for free on the designated van parking area. But please note that camping does not provide access to power or water facilities. Additionally consider staying at the mountain hut Rifugio Auronzo. The rooms at Rifugio Auronzo are very simple but clean and offer affordable accommodation options for a comfortable overnight stay.

How much time should you plan for the Tre Cime di Lavaredo hike?

For those planning to complete the full loop around the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, allocate approximately 5 to 6 hours for the hike. Some online articles suggesting a duration of 3.5 hours which is only achievable if you don’t stop for longer periods for photos or rest. The full circuit hike covers a distance of 10 km (6 miles) without including any additional detours such as the caves. (see below)

Packing essentials for the Tre Cime di Lavaredo hike:

• Cash for the toll fees and payment at the mountain huts.
• Refillable water bottles (pack at least one liter per person). You’ll find a spring along the hike and water sources at the mountain huts to replenish your supply.
• Pack some snacks, even though there are four mountain huts along the way. The mountain huts’ kitchens close relatively early in the later afternoon or even might unexpectedly be closed – like it happened to us.
• Wear layers as the mountain weather can change quickly. Although the sun may feel warm, the wind can cool temperatures rapidly. That’s why I would highly suggest to bring a light jacket even if the weather forecast predicts warm temperatures.
• Apply sunblock, especially on your face, as the UV radiation is strong at an altitude of over 2,300 m. Additionally, bring a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun’s rays.
• Proper hiking boots are definitely needed for this trail. You’ll often walk on gravel while the path is relatively steep – I saw other people struggling with regular sneakers while hiking boots give you a good grip.

Hiking the full loop around the Tre Cime di Lavaredo

Begin your hike at the Rifugio Auronzo, situated at 2,340 m (7,677 ft) above sea level, at the main parking lot. Follow the initial relaxing and manageable path until you reach the next mountain hut, Rifugio Lavaredo. From here, the trail becomes steeper as you walk around the rock formation, finally revealing the famous view of the Three Peaks. The next stop is the renowned Mountain Hut Rifugio A. Locatelli (Dreizinnenhütte), which is usually a great stop for food and a cold drink. Unfortunately it was closed for renovations during our visit in summer 2023.

Tip: A must-see attraction are the nearby caves, which are actually former World War I bunkers, which offer fantastic photo opportunities with a heavenly view. Take a short detour up the mountain Sasso di Sesto (Sextenstein) to reach these caves and capture the Tre Cime di Lavaredo with a stunning framing. From this spot you will also have a nice view over the mountain lakes Laghi dei Piani. It is just a short (but relatively steep) extra hike – and definitely worth it for the view!

Continue your hike by following the trail towards Malga Langalm as indicated by the signs. During the next hour, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, although this section of the hike can be more strenuous. After descending into a depression and ascending shortly after, you’ll finally come across a spring with fresh drinkable water. It is perfect for refilling your bottles or resting at the small mountain hut Malga Langalm. Along the trail, near Malga Langalm, you’ll also find a tiny lake which is a beautiful spot for capturing the beauty of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo one last time before walking around the three peaks and returning to the parking lot.

An additional view point:

If you still have the time and energy, you should definitely consider the short hike to the viewpoint overlooking the Cadini di Misurnia. These rugged and impressive mountain tops create a spectacular sight. It takes around 20 to 30 minutes from the parking lot back at Rifugio Auronzo to reach this viewpoint. The trail is easy to find and can’t be missed! The best lighting conditions for the peaks can be observed during sunrise or sunset, although the view remains spectacular throughout the whole day.

*we didn’t do this hike unfortunately due to lack of time – but on these photos you can see the same mountain peaks of Cadini di Misurnia.

My Dolomites Travel Guide: The best places to visit

When is the best time to visit the Dolomites?

This question depends on your personal preferences and what exactly you want to experience during your visit. In this Travel Guide I mainly focus on hikes and places in the Dolomites which are great for the warmer months.

Spring and summer in the Dolomites begins quite a bit later than in other parts of South Europe. Even in May and the beginning of June some trails are still closed due to snow. Mid June the spring arrives in the mountains of the Dolomites and creates deep green meadows with colorful wild flowers.
Instead the sunny days last until mid autumn: We once been to the Dolomites in the middle of October and had the perfect mid 20 degrees Celsius hiking weather with perfect sunshine all day long.

To avoid the busy summer holidays in Europe – which are between July and August – the best months to visit the Dolomites are September until the end of October. But again: The Dolomites are definitely worth a visit throughout the whole year!

How many days are ideal to visit the best places in the Dolomites?

Many of the best places in the Dolomites can only be reached during hikes and I would definitely plan enough time to really soak in the mountain magic of this place: That’s why five to seven days are ideal to explore the Dolomites – even ten when you want to have more time to relax and/or hike.

How to get around in the Dolomites?

To stay flexible during your Dolomites trip I can’t recommend a car high enough! Of course there are trains and busses available as well – but a car will make traveling through the Dolomites a lot easier and saves you tons of time as well.

We drove with our own car from Germany to Italy but if your home destination is further away you can easily fly to one of the nearby airports in Austria (Innsbruck) or Italy (Venice, Verona, Trieste or Treviso) and make this as your start and end point of your road trip to the most beautiful places in the Dolomites.

Which languages are spoken in the Dolomites?

Even though the Dolomites are located in the Northern part of Italy, it often feels like you’re either in Austria or Switzerland. The cities, lakes and other places in the Dolomites all have a German and an Italian name. In fact the majority of the locals speak German in the country side while you’ll hear more Italian in the big cities and the further you get South.

If you don’t speak German or Italian – never mind: Like in most European places, the majority of the people working in the tourism sector are speaking at least a bit of English. Especially the young generation will help you out in English as well while it might get a bit difficult to communicate with older people living in the country side.

Packing list for the Dolomites:

• a reusable water bottle – the water in the mountains of the Dolomites is fresh and drinkable straight from the tap or at sources you’ll find during hikes. Simply fill up a reusable bottle at your hotel or in restaurants instead of buying bottled water.
  → This is my favorite reusable bottle – light and beautiful!
• layers of clothes – even though you’re traveling to the Dolomites during the peak of summertime, the temperatures can vary a lot in the valley and at mountain peaks. That’s why packing thin jackets and/or sweaters to layer are a must!
  → I always find the cutest light jackets and sweaters HERE!
• sun blocker – the UV radiation in the mountains is quite high and at the top of the mountains you’ll often experience a sunny clear weather. Save your face, neck, arms and shoulders with a good SPF.
• back pack – this might sound obvious but is really important! A backpack is an essential kit for your dolomites adventures to pack all the mentioned items above plus snacks for your hikes

The best places to visit in the Dolomites

Lago di Carezza / Karersee

Even though this lake was much smaller than I always imagined it, the Lago di Carezza definitely belongs to the best places to visit in the Dolomites! It is a turquoise colored lake which perfectly reflects the peaks of the Latemar mountain range behind it. The size of the lake drastically varies throughout the year since Lago di Carezza is glacier fed – just like most mountain lakes in the Dolomites. After the winter season, when the glaciers start to melt, the water level is rising which then again reduces during the warm summer and autumn months. That’s why Lago di Carezza has bees very small during our visit mid October.

Accessing the lake is super easy: Park your car just across the street and walk the easy trail around the lake. The best spots to photograph the lake with the famous reflection are either from the wooden platform at the beginning of the trail or if you follow the path a few steps to the left.

Alpe di Siusi / Seiser Alm – the best place to visit in the Dolomites

One of the first pictures you’ll have in mind when hearing about the Dolomites is probably the iconic view at the Alpe di Siusi. With a size of more than 56 km² it is the largest expand of high alpine meadowland in Europe and without any doubt one of the most beautiful places in the Dolomites.

How to get to Alpe di Siusi?

Reaching the Alpe di Siusi definitely needs some planning cause it’s not possible to drive up by car at any time. Here are the most common ways to reach Alpe di Siusi:

• by car: A winding road leads up to a parking lot (cost: 18,- EUR per day in cash) at the small village Compatsch at the Alpe di Siusi. It is a gated road and closed between 9am and 5pm. So you either have to drive up before 9am or after 5pm – which might be too late if you want to experience the full beauty of the area.
• by cable car: There are tow gondolas which lead up to the Alpe die Siusi:
  1) From Ortisei / St. Ulrich: between 8.30am – 5pm (until 6pm from mid June – mid September ) for 20,90 EUR (two ways / per adult)
  2) From Siusi / Seis: between 8am – 6pm (until 7pm from mid June – mid September ) for 19 EUR (two ways / per adult)
  But note that all cable cars are only opened from mid May until the beginning of November.
• the easiest way: To be fully flexible during your visit I can highly recommend to book a hotel for one night at the Alpe di Siusi! This way you will get a special permit from your hotel to drive up to the Alpe during any time of the day (only on your check-in day), park your car at your hotel and don’t have to worry about reaching the last cable car going down while shooting the sunset. The next day you can drive back down during any time of the day.

What are the most photogenic spots at Alpe di Siusi?

While the whole area looks like out of a picture book, there are two spots which are especially photogenic:

• Overlooking the two mountain peaks Langkofel (Sasso Lungo) and Plattkofel (Sasso Piatto) from the soft meadow hills.
• The swings at the little alpine restaurant Malga Sanon.

You can find the exact coordinates for both spots in my map at the end of this post!

Seceda

My personal second favorite place in the Dolomites – after the Alpe di Siusi – is the Seceda peak. 2,500 m above sea level this surreal scene seams to be from another world…

There are different ways to reach the top: either during a hike from the Col Raiser cable car station or if you’re not in the mood or don’t have the time for a three hours hike, you can simply take the two cable cars which lead from Ortisei / St. Ulrich up to the summit.

The cable car is open during the summer season and winter season as well, but the exact opening hours and prices change seasonally so definitely check out the current details on this website (click either “summer nature” or “ski area” in the menu to find the summer & winter details)

From the cable car station at the top, follow the path along the little restaurant and the summit cross, further to the left to find the most beautiful view point and photo opportunity at Seceda. But be careful – there are no barriers at this spot and the drop is pretty high!

Tre Cime di Lavaredo

This spot is probably on every traveler’s agenda in the Dolomites – and for a good reason. The famous Three Peaks are the most famous rock formation in the Dolomites.

This is the most important info for your hike to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo:

The hike begins at the parking lot of the Refugio Auronzo mountain hut, in which, by the way, you can also stay overnight at a reasonable price. The entrance for the Tre Cime Natural Park costs 30€ per car and day. (If you drive in after 7pm, the following day is included). The start of the hike is behind the mountain hut and you can’t miss it. For the whole circuit around the Tre Cime di Lavaredo you should plan about 5 hours. And now the good news: it is one of the few places in the world where you should not be there early to miss the biggest crowds, but rather late. Starting your hike around the Three Peaks in the afternoon has many more advantages: Significantly fewer people on the trails, open space for drone shots and the best light for photos! The sun comes around the Three Peaks only after noon and illuminates them in the evening in a great orange light.

Insider tip: Only 30 minutes from the same parking lot is the overlook of the impressive Cadini di Misurnia! A popular photo spot in the Dolomites. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it to this spot ourselves after our Tre Cime di Lavaredo hike.

Lago di Braies / Pragser Wildsee – the most famous place in the Dolomites

The most famous and photographed mountain lake in the Dolomites area is the Lago di Braies. It can easily be reached by car and you’ll find several parking lots just a few steps away from the lake.
During the day you can rent boats to float on the crystal clear water which beautifully reflects the surrounding mountain peaks. Especially the boat deck is a beloved setting for photographers from all over the world during sunrise. The boat renting service only opens at 9.30am but before that the deck will be not accessible. So you either have to wait for the opening to take your photos – when the place will most likely be crowded already – or book a private slot with the company to take photos during sunrise just by yourself! Of course the company knows that their deck is a famous photo location so they charge more than a 100 EUR for this time slot!

If that’s too much for you to pay for just one iconic photo – never mind: There are countless other photo locations at the lake. Especially in the early morning, when the mountain peaks get lit up by the sun. Make sure to plan time for a little hike which leads one time around the lake and offers many beautiful perspectives and sights. The whole round tour will take you around 1 – 1,5 hrs.

Tip: If you want to arrive super early at Lago die Braies and don’t want to start your drive in the middle of the night, you can stay in the hotel which is located directly at the lake: → Find & book it here!

Other places you need to visit in the Dolomites:

The last time we’ve been to the Dolomites we had our senior dog lady with us and had to skip a few amazing hikes and views which would be too tough for her. Other places are easier to reach but we just didn’t had the time for them unfortunately.
Here is a list of incredible places in the Dolomites which we want to visit the next time and that you should put to your itinerary as well:

• Tre Cime di Lavaredo / Drei Zinnen: Probably the most famous and remarkable mountain peaks in the Dolomites. Plan at least half a day for this beautiful place in the Dolomites since there are many hikes to do, views to enjoy and hundreds of photo opportunities. Arrive early to park your car at “Parkplatz zu den Drei Zinnen” (30,- EUR per car) – already at 9 am you will most likely have to wait in line in front of the parking lot.
•  Lago di Dobbiaco – a beautiful lake, close to the Tre Cime National Park. It is a cute place to take photos or for a pic nic in the summertime.
• Vajolet Towers – three concentrated mountain peaks which are a breathtaking sight. They are lesser known and crowded than the famous Tre Cime and can be reached via a hike which is a bit more intense. But the views are definitely worth it!
• Rifugio Odle / Geisler Alm – a beautiful place which can be reached on a picturesque loop trail called “Adolf Munkel Trail”. You’ll have spectacular views throughout the hike and can enjoy some great local food at the Geisler Alm restaurant during a break.
• Val di Funes – A picture perfect valley in the Dolomites. Especially the little village Santa Maddalena offers countless photography opportunities.
• Lago di Sorapis – The bluest mountain lake in the Dolomites which can only be reached via a 12km hike. For this reason Lago di Sorapis is less crowded than the easy accessible lakes like Lago di Braies.

The best place to stay in the Dolomites

If you want to spoil yourself a bit after days of hiking and exploring I can’t recommend you the incredible Forestis Dolomites high enough! We visited this hotel 2020, shortly after the opening and were absolutely blown away by the architecture, the pools, the views, the food, … everything about this hotel has been outstanding. My Review of the Lefay Resort & Spa Dolomiti

Location & Accessibility

Lefay Resort & Spa Dolomiti is located above the small village of Pinzolo, surrounded by green mountains and forests in Trentino. By car it is only an hour away from Lake Garda or 4.5 hours from Munich. A visit to the resort can therefore be wonderfully combined with a road trip through Northern Italy and is an ideal stop to relax and unwind in between hikes and sightseeing. In winter, the region is also a paradise for skiers, making Lefay a great destination all year round.

The concept of the Lefay Resort & Spa Dolomiti

Currently there are two Lefay resorts in Italy, one in the Dolomites and another on Lake Garda. Both resorts are luxurious wellness oases.
When you arrive at the resort and enter for the first time, you will notice the wonderful combination of modernity with the coziness of a chalet: a dark & elegant design, many wooden elements, warm colors and fireplaces.

Luxury is redefined at Lefay, because here it means sustainability, tranquility, getting back to nature and having time for yourself. Therefore, wellness is omnipresent at Lefay and the 5000m² spa area is very diverse. Indulgence and culinary delights also play a major role in the concept – but more on that later.

The Suites at Lefay Resort & Spa Dolomiti

Even the smallest room category at Lefay Resort & Spa is the Junior Suite, just under 60m² in size. It is equipped with many natural materials, a high-quality interior design and many windows as well as a balcony, from which the beauty of the Dolomites can be enjoyed.

Our Royal Pool & Spa Suite

We slept in a Royal Pool & Spa Suite. And as the name already implies, this room category is ultra luxurious and very generously designed with 315m². The centerpiece of the suite is the private spa area with sauna, indoor whirlpool and treatment beds. It is fully glazed, and looks out onto the private terrace with views over the valley and mountains in the background. At the same time, however, it is protected from outside glances.

The living room invites you to relax and linger, has a dining table, its own bar and even a fully equipped kitchen. Through a sliding door the spacious outdoor area opens up with sun loungers and a heated jacuzzi, from which the view can be enjoyed wonderfully. In addition to the terrace, the living room has a balcony overlooking the pool and the main building.

Super cozy is the bedroom with an electronic fireplace, which can also be found in the living room. The bedding in the Lefay is incredibly soft and the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in. The bathroom is also eye catching with black marble. A great highlight in the double shower is the integrated window overlooking the forest (this can of course be covered if desired.) In addition, the bathroom is equipped with in-house luxurious skin care – and shower products.

Wellness

The 5000m² wellness area is the heart of the Lefay Resort & Spa in the Dolomites. Both indoors and outdoors you can relax perfectly here. The large outdoor pool is heated and thus invites you to swim even in winter. In summer you can sunbathe in cabanas and enjoy the view.

Inside, the spa area is divided into different floors and offers various wellness options. Be it fitness in the super-equipped gym or relaxation in the salt grotto, where there is even a pool in which you can “float” like in the Dead Sea. There are also several indoor pools and whirlpools.

The Lefay Spa Method combines traditional Chinese knowledge with Western techniques to offer a special and wide range of spa treatments. I myself tried a Relaxing Energy Point massage, which was recommended to me by the spa team. It is a mix of a classical massage with the activation of various points on the body, which provide for an ideal energy flow and relaxation. In fact, it was a unique experience, which made me feel very calm.

I also booked a Couple Ritual together with my husband. We have chosen “The Chalet”. The ritual takes place in a special treatment room, which looks like a rustic mountain hut. Here we first had a bath, followed by an oil massage and let the whole experience end with relaxation with a drink by the fireplace.

Wellness is the soul of Lefay, which is clearly felt by guests. The selection is so varied that you can try a new wellness method every day without anything being repetitive. The incorporation of natural elements, as well as the view of the mountains, ensure a connection with nature.

Breakfast & Restaurant

Dolomia

In the main restaurant Dolomia, both lunch and dinner are served as an à la carte menu, as well as breakfast as a buffet. In addition to the breakfast classics, the buffet also includes sparkling wine and a juicer with which fresh juice can be prepared as desired. You can also order simple egg dishes like fried eggs, but I would have loved a separate menu with Eggs Benedict, waffles & Co.

For lunch, there are various snacks as well as delicious salads and sandwiches. But my favorite part of Dolomia is dinner: the menu includes several courses influenced by authentic Italian cuisine from the region, using primarily local ingredients. In addition, there are changing daily specials and a “spa menu” with healthy choices.

An eye-catcher in the restaurant is the open kitchen as well as the impressive wine collection in a glass room, which stands in the center of the restaurant. Here are primarily great wines from the region, but also noble drops with international origin.

Grual 

For a special occasion, Grual is the right choice. The fine dining restaurant is named after the mountain behind Lefay Resort & Spa Dolomiti and the menu is inspired by the forest and the mountains. This means that all dishes and ingredients used are of local origin, organically grown and found in the region. Including meat, fish and vegetarian dishes. We enjoyed a great eight-course meal here and accommodating special requests were no problem. However, you should plan plenty of time for this dinner experience – but the matching wine accompaniment to the menu shortens the waiting time

Lounge Bar

Probably the most beautiful restaurant area is the lounge bar on the highest floor of the main building. It is elegantly furnished with comfortable leather sofas, a fireplace, a library, and a well-stocked bar. The surrounding glass facade opens up a great panoramic view into the valley. It is the perfect place for an aperitif in the evening and thanks to the terrace also for lunch. At lunchtime, dishes from the main Dolomia restaurant can be ordered here.

There is also a separate cigar room in the lounge bar with special finds to smoke. However, we ourselves do not smoke and therefore only admired it from the outside.

Résumé of my Review of the Lefay Resort & Spa Dolomiti

Our three days at Lefay Resort & Spa Dolomiti flew by as we enjoyed every moment. We didn’t even leave the resort during this time to make sure we could enjoy our amazing suite, spa services and the dining possibilities to the fullest. It was definitely not our last visit to Lefay! We loved the concept and definitely want to try the resort again in the winter when the gorgeous landscape is covered in snow.

The majestic Duomo di Firenze

The Duomo di Firenze is undoubtedly one of the most impressive sights in Florence. Admission is free, though there is a charge to climb the dome. However, the interior of the cathedral is less imposing than the exterior. If you want to visit the cathedral, I recommend getting there early to enjoy Florence’s most famous landmark without large crowds. Admission starts at 10:15, but for beautiful photos from the outside, it’s worth getting there just after sunrise.

The charming Ponte Vecchio

A walk across the Ponte Vecchio is an absolute must. This famous bridge, more than 1000 years old, is lined with jewelry stores and small boutiques and offers a beautiful view of the river Arno. The bridge is not only a great photo motif, but also invites you to stroll through the little shops.
Tip: Among the restaurant and bar tips for Florence you will find a great bar with the ideal view of the Ponte Vecchio!

The magnificent Palazzo Vecchio

Another highlight is the Palazzo Vecchio, an imposing building with a rich history. Here you can walk through the magnificent halls and admire the impressive works of art. A visit is definitely worth it to feel the historical atmosphere.

Art at the Uffizi Gallery

For art lovers, a visit to the Uffizi Gallery is an absolute must. Here you can marvel at masterpieces like Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” and be enchanted by the beauty of the artworks. Plan enough time to explore all the highlights of the gallery.

Buchette del Vino – The Wine Windows

An absolute highlight in Florence are the Buchette del Vino, also known as wine windows. Originally they were created during the time of the plague, but at least since the pandemic they have once again become a popular attraction for tourists. Stroll through Florence’s charming old town and you’ll discover more than 100 of these small, inconspicuous windows. What makes them so special? It’s simple: you can just knock on one of the windows and receive a glass of wine without direct contact with anyone else. It’s a unique experience where you can feel the Tuscan hospitality and experience the traditional flair of the city in a very special way. The Buchette del Vino are the perfect way to take a little break during a city walk and enjoy the authentic Florence. The Oldest Pharmacy Santa Maria Novella & Basilica

Be sure to visit the Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy, the oldest pharmacy still in operation in Italy and probably the oldest in the world. Founded as early as 1221, the building includes a basilica where monks lived and grew herbs the garden to make balsams and other medicines. Immerse yourself in the history of medicine and explore the fascinating world of this unique pharmacy. Of course, the basilica itself is also worth a visit!

The magnificent Palazzo Patti and the Boboli Gardens

Palazzo Patti with its impressive Boboli Gardens is another highlight in Florence. It was once the palace of the Medici family and impresses with its magnificent architecture. Today, several galleries and museums are located in the palace, such as the Galleria Palatina with masterpieces by Rubens, Raphael and Co.

The extensive Boboli Gardens, surround the palace like an oasis of tranquility where you can escape the hustle and bustle. Stroll through the beautiful gardens, discover romantic grottos and water features and statues and enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the surrounding nature.

The magical sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo

For the best view of the city at sunset, you should definitely visit Piazzale Michelangelo. You’ll have to climb a few steps first, but the gorgeous view and romantic atmosphere will make up for the effort. Take a bottle of wine or beer with you to celebrate the moment and watch the city turn into the most beautiful orang and pink colors.

Addition – SECRET TIP: During our second visit in Florence we came back to this spot but found it extremely crowded! Which is why we searched for an alternative view with less crowds – AND WE FOUND IT! Search for the “Basilica di San Miniato” – just a few minutes from the Piazzale Michelangelo. You can walk down to the Terrazzo San Miniato for the same view but just a hand full of other people – it’s a real hidden gem!

This unique hotel does not only have the ideal location, close to all the main attraction it als has the highest rooftop in the city, offering the best panoramic view which is especially magical during sunset.

The Excelsior is located in an old 15th century palace but got recently fully renovated while keeping the authentic charm of this place. It literally feels like stepping in a museum as there ist so much to discover!

The best Restaurants & bars in Florence for every budget

Chic Nonna

• Chic Nonna €€€€ – very upscale cuisine, but probably one of the best dinners in the whole city! The restaurant is located in the Hotel Palazzo Portinari Salviati in a historic setting.
• Bar of Hotel Lugano €€€ – the ideal spot for a cocktail or aperitif on the hotel’s terrace overlooking the medieval bridge Ponte Vecchio (especially impressive at night).
• Osteria del Proconsolo €€ – incredibly delicious pasta dishes.
• Gustarium Firenze € – ideal for lunch or as a snack. This place has unique pizza, which is sold in individual pieces and can’t be compared to anything I’ve tried before.

Pisa – More than just the leaning tower

A day trip to Pisa is an absolute must if you find yourself in Florence, as the drive takes only a little over an hour. Of course, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is the city’s most famous landmark, and you should definitely climb the 241 steps to enjoy the breathtaking view from the top. Climbing the tower, due to the incline, feels like you’re drunk!
But Pisa has much more to offer! Stroll through the narrow streets of the old town, discover charming squares and visit the impressive Duomo and Baptistery.

Tuscany wine region – a pleasure for the senses

Tuscany is famous for its picturesque landscape, delicious wine and exquisite cuisine. A day trip to the Tuscany wine region is a real treat for the senses. Hotel Review: The Forestis Dolomites

LOCATION

The Forestis Dolomites is idyllically settled over a valley in the heart of the Dolomites overlooking the lush green forests and of course the majestic mountain shapes right behind it. The best way to reach it is by car – we stayed in this hotel to enjoy a relaxing break during a road trip through Tyrol in the summertime. The Forestis has the perfect location to immerse into this spectacular nature and completely switch off for a while.

The hotel is just some minutes away from a charming little town called Brixen which is the oldest one in Tyrol.

Rooms

The hotel complex consists of different buildings which are all connected. The smallest one is a traditional mountain hut with regular rooms and suites. This building has already been a little hotel prior the construction of the three spectacular towers. In these brand new complexes are the Tower Suites situated and – at the top of two of the towers – even a two-storied Penthouse.
All rooms & suites offer an amazing view in the direction of the mountains but naturally the higher Towers Suites and the two Penthouses have a greater vista over the scenery.

The Penthouse of the Forestis Dolomites

This is one of the most spectacular rooms we ever stayed at! The two penthouses of the Forestis are designed with natural elements, a minimalist style while offering a maximum of luxury, privacy and tranquility at the same time.

You enter the Penthouse right in the living room with a fireplace, an open kitchen and the big balcony. Behind it is the walk in closet and the bathroom with natural signature Forestis bath amenities. The bedroom is connected to the balcony as well and has a huge glass front which offers the most spectacular view of the Dolomites right from your bed! But no worries – thick curtains can turn your bedroom into complete darkness to sleep.

A wooden door leads upstairs to your private sauna with Dolomites view and of course to your very own rooftop sundeck with a huge heated pool. It’s without any doubt the best place to enjoy the spectacular mountain vista – especially during sunrise!

The Forestis Spa & Pool

All areas of this unique hotel connect the four natural elements and the Spa & Pool area is a perfect example for it. Again the design is modern with many wooden elements. The area is open for all guests and beside the treatment rooms you’ll find saunas, quiet areas, a snack & tea bar and the big heated stone pool. It is indoors and outdoors as well so you can use it in all weathers!

During the warmer months you can enjoy the view from one of the sun beds and soak in the crisp mountain air and warming sun.

Sport lovers will enjoy the fitness rooms and yoga sessions with the most spectacular view!

Forestis Cuisine

The “Forestis Cuisine” is a place like no other. Never in my life have I seen a restaurant which is as perfectly designed as this step shaped restaurant. It has floor-to-ceiling windows which can be completely opened to enjoy your breakfast outside.

The cuisine of the Forestis Dolomites is inspired by nature and connects South Tyrolean traditions with modern ideas while using natural ingredients of local farmers. Every dish is not only a piece of art for the eyes but also a tasteful experience which will leave you speechless. The menu changes daily depending on the seasonal ingredients.

Breakfast

There’s no better way to start the day than with the fresh breakfast buffet of the Forestis Dolomites. The options are various and again made out of local products like fresh veggies, milk products, sausages and so much more. My favorite part of the buffet has been the juicing room to create your own juice out of fresh veggies and fruit. Additionally you can order hot dishes from the à la carte menu at your table.

The Bar

No matter if during the day to enjoy a teatime on the sunny terrace or for a fancy cocktail in the evening. The Bar & Lounge of the Forestis is the ideal place to enjoy the hospitality of South Tyrol while being surrounded by nature.

St Mark’s Square – Iconic Venice Instagram Spot
(Piazza San Marco)

The most famous place in Venice is the St. Mark’s Square from the 11. Century which is framed by impressive and photogenic buildings. The best shooting spot is right in front of the Doge’s Palace and the Basilica Di San Marco but make sure to be there as early as possible. Starting from 8 o’clock this exact place will not only get full of people but also little souvenir stalls which block the view for the best photos.

Interesting fact: Don’t be shocked if you may experience St. Mark’s Square flooded! It is the city’s lowest part, built just under a meter above the average tide level. So as soon as the water level in Venice is rising more than 90cm (35 inches) above average, the whole square will be flooded until the water recedes again.

Campanile di San Marco – Venice Photography Viewpoint Over St. Mark’s Square

If you’re visiting the St. Mark’s Square you definitely won’t miss the Campanile Di San Marco. It’s the highest tower in Venice and for 10,- EUR per person an elevator takes you up to the top of the former guard tower for a panoramic view over the lagoon and the city. The Campanile is one of the photo spots in Venice that you don’t have to visit early in the morning to beat the crowds. The top is always equally visited by tourists since they only allow a specific number of people at the same time. That’s why you need to plan some time waiting in line before getting up.

Bridge of Sighs – Famous Venice Instagram Spot
(Ponte dei Sospiri)

Built in the beginning of the 17th century the Bridge of Sighs connects the Doge’s Palace and the old prison. The bridge got its name due to the fact that it has been the last way convicts walked before they were likely going to be incarcerated for a long time and looked back at their life in freedom with a long sigh.
The iconic shape of this bridge is one of my favorite photo spots in Venice especially when captured it from the smaller bridge right behind it. (See my map below for the exact location) The bridge lies along a busy way for tourists but also locals on their way to work so it’s a bit tricky to find a lucky second without other people running in your photo. So make sure to shoot this place early in the morning after your sunrise shooting at the Marcus Square.

Rialto Bridge – Iconic Venice Photo Spot on the Grand Canal
(Ponte di Rialto)

One of the most iconic photo spots in Venice is the oldest of the four bridges crossing the Canal Grande: The Rialto Bridge which was built in the late 16. century.

It offers various photo locations: From the top of the bridge itself you overlook the canal with the gondolas. If you want to shoot the Ponte di Rialto itself the best photo spots are the banks of the canal with the iconic bridge in the background. Find my favorite perspective for photos with the Rialto Bridge in the map below.

Additionally the Rialto Bridge is a great spot to start your walking tour through Venice or an iconic gondola ride.

Gondola Ride – Classic Venice Photography Experience on the Canals

You just can’t leave Venice without seeing this romantic city at least once from the perspective of a traditional gondola – and taking some photos of course The gondola tours start at almost all famous tourist spots and usually end the ride at the same spot where you entered the gondola. Make sure to bargain the price cause the offers of the gondoliers are usually very high. But depending on the high or low season you still have to pay around 60-90 EUR for a ride (for up to four persons).

The Photogenic Book Steps – Hidden Venice Instagram Spot

You’ve probably seen the photograph of a person sitting on a staircase made out of books before. We stumbled upon this photo spot by accident without looking for it while a little walk through Venice. It’s located in the beautiful library Libreria Acqua Alta which is well known for the cats living here but it also has a little backyard at the very end of the shop where you’ll find the famous book steps. Make sure to walk them up to enjoy a lovely view over the little canal behind the building.

Scalzi Bridge – Underrated Venice Photo Spot
(Ponte Degli Scalzi)

Close to the train station in Venice is a wide bridge located which connects both banks of the Canal Grande. We came here during sunset to enjoy the view from the Scalzi Bridge over the water with the gondolas passing by. The bridge also offers a nice perspective to the church Chiesa di Santa Maria di Nazareth behind it. Scalzi is not as famous as the Rialto Bridge so it’s way easier to have a lucky moment without other people in your photo.

The Jetty at Hotel San Moise – Secret Venice Instagram Photo Spot

Eating a pizza at the jetty right next to the water, sipping a glass of vino and watching the gondoliers passing by is obligatory if you’re planning to visit Venice! One jetty which offers a dreamy view and photo perspective is located right at the Hotel San Moise. We came here shortly after sunset to enjoy a relaxing evening and it’s one of my favorite memories from our visit Like all other photo spots you can find the exact location below!

Venice is definitely one of the most photogenic cities we ever visited and feels like a film set. You will find countless more photo spots while strolling trough the little alleys with all together 400 bridges! Definitely take a full day to immerse into the magic of Venice and find some hidden gems!
