Monaco is perfect for a relaxing weekend with plenty of highlights that are quick and easy to reach. In this post, I’d like to introduce you to the best sights – along with my very own personal tips for Monaco. As usual, you’ll find all Monaco sights on the map below.

Who hasn’t heard of the world’s second-smallest city-state and immediately thought of luxury, glamour and fancy cars? Yes, the Principality of Monaco, situated on the Côte d’Azur, is tiny –  with a total size of just two square kilometres, it is smaller than the Central Park in New York City. Yet it is one of the richest countries in the world. This is partly due to its rich history, combined with its strategically valuable location and unobstructed sea views. According to locals, the second reason is said to be Princess Grace Kelly, who brought glamour and a certain lifestyle to the place. For the Monegasques, she is the icon who made Monaco so famous.

When is the best time to visit Monaco for a weekend break?

Spring is particularly ideal, as the temperatures are already quite pleasant and the parks and gardens are transformed into a colourful sea of blossoms. Autumn is also a good choice, as the weather often remains mild and warm for a long time. Of course, Monaco’s summers are beautiful as well, but you’ll encounter far more tourists than in spring or autumn.

Important: You should definitely avoid major events such as the Monaco Grand Prix or the Monaco Yacht Show.

Is Monaco really that expensive?

There’s no doubt about it: Monaco is a place of superlatives. One in three residents is a millionaire, and it regularly attracts global superstars and the ultra-rich. So you might think that a weekend in Monaco is prohibitively expensive. But we were pleasantly surprised: prices in hotels and restaurants are often comparable to those in major German cities, and in some cases even cheaper than in the south of France.

Conclusion: Luxurious, yes, but not an ‘unaffordable’ destination

What you need to know about getting there and transport for your weekend in Monaco:

The nearest airport is Nice Côte d’Azur Airport in France. The journey from there to Monaco takes just 35 to 40 minutes.

My recommendations once you’re there: To explore Monaco’s sights, it’s best to leave your car behind, as there are very few parking spaces and they’re also very expensive. The public buses in Monaco are highly recommended, as they’re fast, run regularly and cover almost all the highlights. Last but not least, travelling by bus during a holiday helps you to relax, as you can really take in all the views.

Day 1: Old Town & classic Monaco highlights

Monaco’s Old Town

One of Monaco’s most popular attractions is the Old Town, known as Monaco-Ville. Situated on a rocky peninsula (‘The Rock’), it is the historic heart of Monaco. Perfect for strolling through narrow, winding streets lined with restaurants, souvenir shops and picture-perfect spots.

Compared to modern Monte-Carlo, Monaco-Ville exudes a more historic atmosphere. This is also where the Prince’s Palace is located, which has been the official residence of the Grimaldi family since the 13th century.

My suggested walking tour of Monaco-Ville is perfect for a relaxed start to your weekend trip.

Highlights in Monaco-Ville:

Oceanographic Museum of Monaco

Founded by Prince Albert I (the great-grandfather of the current Prince), it focuses particularly on marine conservation. It is both a museum and a research centre and houses a nursery programme for endangered marine species, including turtles, for which specific conservation programmes have been developed. You can admire a huge aquarium home to more than 6,000 marine creatures (including sharks), and a virtual submarine tour shows you what the Mediterranean might look like in 2050 if we protect it. In keeping with the museum’s motto: To Know, Love & Protect the Ocean. The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco is definitely a top attraction that you shouldn’t miss.

Saint-Martin Gardens (Jardins Saint-Martin)

You’ll find the Saint-Martin Gardens right next to the museum. Here, amongst pine and holm oak trees, there are numerous exotic plants that thrive in the mediterranean climate. The gardens serve as a peaceful retreat with numerous paths where you can take a relaxing stroll. You can also enjoy spectacular views over the sea. I have marked the best vantage point on my map – it is one of the best photo spots in Monaco. For me, the Saint-Martin Gardens are among my favourite tips for Monaco.

Notre-Dame-Immaculée Cathedral

Monaco’s famous white cathedral is an imposing landmark of the principality, deeply rooted in the religious life of its inhabitants. It was built on the foundations of a former church and consecrated in 1911. Among other things, the cathedral houses the tombs of all the Princes of Monaco and, naturally, is also the venue for princely weddings and coronations. As Monaco’s main church, it is undoubtedly one of the most important sights. Admission outside of church services is usually free.

The Prince’s Palace of Monaco

The fourth highlight in Monaco-Ville and a symbol of Monaco is the official residence of the reigning Prince. After the Grimaldi family, originally from Genoa, was forced into exile during the civil war in 1295, they eventually arrived at the Rock of Monaco with its tower and small fortifications. Francesco Grimaldi is said to have captured the rock in 1297 through a ruse. Over the centuries, the fortress was converted into the Grimaldi family’s residence, thus taking on its palatial appearance. From April to May, parts of the magnificent residence are open to the public. Tip: The traditional changing of the guard by the ‘Carabiniers du Prince’ takes place daily at 11.55 am on the Place du Palais.

Day 2: Stunning views & extravagant Monte Carlo

A short hike with the best view of Monaco

The Tête de Chien is a spectacular and very well-known viewpoint offering a magnificent view across the Côte d’Azur and the surrounding mountains. It is located in France, and you can even spot Italy from this fantastic panoramic spot. See for yourself and make your perfect weekend in Monaco even better with this unique experience!

How to get there

It’s just a short walk if you get dropped off by Uber at the car park. Important: Uber isn’t available in Monaco, so you’ll first need to take the bus to the French border. From there, you can book an Uber. They’re usually already waiting, as many people use this trick. From the car park, it’s then about a short 10 – 15-minute walk. I’ve marked the exact spot and the car park on my map for you.

Warning: There are no barriers at the Tête de Chien viewpoint – so please be extra careful whilst admiring the spectacular view.

Monte Carlo

Another of Monaco’s highlights and a must-visit spot is the Place du Casino – arguably one of the most famous places in the world. The Formula 1 circuit runs right past it. But it’s also familiar from moviews, such as James Bond.

This is where Monaco shows off its most glamorous side, as the square is home to the famous Casino Monte-Carlo and the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo. Incidentally, from the hotel, you can walk directly into the casino via an underground passage from your five-star suite without being seen. Unbelievable!

Here you’ll see: luxury cars, designer outfits and, with a bit of luck, celebrities.

Fun fact:  Locals aren’t allowed to gamble in the casino – only visitors.

My insider tip: Even if you’re not staying at the famous hotel, you can still visit the Hôtel de Paris – simply pop into a café or restaurant of the hotel, such as Cédric Grolet in the lush courtyard. Don’t miss out!

Relaxing moments at the Beach

Of course, no weekend in Monaco would be complete without a trip to the beach. Larvotto Beach is a pebble beach with stunning blue, crystal-clear waters. It’s the perfect spot to relax for a while. Perhaps you’d also like to take a leisurely stroll along the shore.

In the evening, the beach promenade, with its many charming cafés and restaurants, is perfect for a leisurely stroll. There’s no more romantic way to round off an eventful day in Monaco.

Must-see in Monaco: Jardin Exotique

Having reopened in March 2026 after almost six years of renovation, the Jardin Exotique de Monaco boasts a vast collection of exotic plants from all over the world and is considered by many to be one of Monaco’s most beautiful attractions. Perched on a steep cliff, it also offers a magnificent view over the sea and Monaco-Ville. A particular highlight is the integrated stalactite cave.

Unfortunately, we were in Monaco just a few days before the reopening and therefore missed to admire the garden with our own eyes – but we will definitely make up for that on our next visit.

• You’ll find a picturesque historic old town with numerous sights that are easily accessible on foot.
• You’re right at the heart of Monte-Carlo’s iconic luxury.
• If you’re longing for peace and relaxation, you can quickly immerse yourself in Monaco’s natural surroundings and numerous parks, and enjoy breathtaking views from the lookouts.
• Monaco is surprisingly accessible and often affordable.

For me, it’s just the right mix of a relaxed city break and luxury experiences to treat yourself a little.

Andalusia is probably Spain’s best-known region, yet it is full of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. The name alone exudes a sense of freedom and wanderlust. Andalusia is characterised by endless landscapes, mesmerizing beaches, enchanting nature and its typical white villages – combined with well-developed roads and manageable distances. This makes it ideal for a road trip. You can expect the perfect mix of city, nature and relaxation.

In my post, I would like to present a possible route for your tour of Andalusia, accompanied, as always, by my personal tips. The focus of this route is on conscious travel and enjoyment. My aim was not to ‘tick off’ as many highlights as possible, but to allow enough time for relaxation and to immerse yourself in the Andalusian way of life. A wonderful, unforgettable experience!

As usual, I have marked all the highlights and spots for you on a map of Andalusia.

How many days should you plan for your Andalusia road trip?

To visit the most beautiful places in Andalusia at a leisurely pace, you should plan at least 7 days for your road trip – or even better, a few days more.

Possible itinerary:

• 2 days in Seville – explore the famous and beautiful capital of Andalusia
• 2-3 days inland – Discover nature and visit some of the authentic Pueblos Blancos (white villages)
• 2 days Costa del Sol – Relax on the beach and stroll through the villages

You should definitely not plan less time than this, otherwise your trip through Andalusia could quickly become stressful!

When is the best time to go on your Andalusia road trip?

Andalusia is in the south of Spain, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.

Outside of Seville, it can be quiet even during the summer holidays, as the region is still an insider tip in Spain, but the heat can be very unpleasant for a tour of Andalusia. Therefore, I recommend spring (April – June) or autumn (September – October). It is simply the best time to travel to Andalusia, with ideal weather.

The ideal route for your Andalusia road trip

Start: Seville (2 days)

The Andalusian capital Seville is the ideal starting point for your round trip, and not just for logistical reasons. Seville offers you a grand welcome to the Andalusian way of life, with lots of history and delicious tapas. Be sure to plan 2 full days!

You’ll love exploring the historic old town and sampling your way through the countless tapas bars. In the evening, at sunset, make yourself comfortable in one of the rooftop bars and enjoy the fantastic view with a delicious drink.

My Tip: I recommend picking up your rental car at the end of your stay in Seville, as the city is easy to explore on foot.

Hotel tip in Seville:

Querencia de Sevilla, Autograph Collection

A beautiful hotel in the heart of Seville, perfectly located for strolls through the old town and featuring a stunning rooftop terrace with a pool and bar offering unique views over the city.

Pueblos Blancos – The White Villages (at least 2 days)

The Pueblos Blancos are probably the most striking image of Andalusia. The route, which connects a total of 19 white villages, winds its way through the mountainous landscape. It is simply an indescribable feeling to see the cute villages sparkling from afar. A sight that is an absolute must during your Andalusia road trip!

In addition to their whitewashed houses, all the villages are characterised by their Moorish roots. Narrow streets and small squares invite you to stroll around. You will often find the remains of Moorish castles. The colourful floral decorations attached to many houses are super pretty and shine cheerfully against the white walls.

However, I find their mostly spectacular location on steep mountain slopes or rocky outcrops most impressive. They offer fantastic views of the countryside and the sea.

Travel time: Without stops – which I definitely do not recommend – the route takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Please note: Some of the roads are very narrow, so you should drive carefully. This also allows you to enjoy the view much better.

My recommended stops:

First things first: every one of these villages is worth a visit! All of the ones we explored were incredibly charming and peaceful. It felt like we had them all to ourselves. You simply have to see their charm for yourself. Here is just a small selection of my highlights:

• Arcos de la Frontera – one of the most famous pueblos blancos, perched on a rock with cliffs on both sides offering spectacular views of the region

• Zahara de la Sierra – located on a mountain with a turquoise reservoir, also known for its olive groves

• Setenil de las Bodegas – built in a gorge & unique because its houses were built into the surrounding rocks. You should definitely check it out!

My hotel recommendations:

You can find recommended places to stay in the direction of Ronda or in the countryside.

Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park (1-2 days)

The breathtaking Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park should definitely be on your itinerary when travelling through Andalusia. It is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and one of the rainiest regions in Spain, which is reflected in its lush green landscape with deep gorges. A true paradise for hiking and climbing!

Recommended activities:

Go on a short hike or simply enjoy a scenic drive. You can take your time and visit the many great viewpoints in the nature park.

If you want to take more time and experience a little more action, why not take the opportunity to go on a canyoning tour? I had a lot of fun doing this, although you should be prepared to get wet from time to time. But that’s easy to accept, because you don’t get an adventure like this every day.

Another item on my bucket list is the Vía Ferrata El Caimán (Via Ferrata is the name given to various spectacular climbing routes in Spain). It features numerous bridges and impressive passages. However, you should be in good physical condition and have a little courage. Please note: only undertake this tour with a guide!

A highlight in Andalusia: Ronda (1-2 days)

My favourite town in Andalusia is Ronda – perched on a rocky plateau, with a beautiful 120-metre-deep canyon (El Tajo Gorge) spanned by a bridge that is more than 200 years old. Simply spectacular! The white houses, some of which seem to cling to the edge of the precipice, are also typical here. I highly recommend planning a visit in Ronda during your Andalusia road trip.

A popular viewpoint offers a magnificent view of the striking Puente Nuevo bridge, which spans the gorge with a small waterfall below. I have marked the spot on my map. It is an absolute highlight in Ronda! The path is a bit strenuous to walk, especially the way back, which is quite steep, but it is well maintained. The best time to visit is late in the afternoon or shortly before sunset, when the bridge is illuminated by the sun.

Ronda has also magically attracted many artists and writers. No wonder, because the town is truly enchanting. Let yourself be seduced and stroll leisurely through the pretty old town with its small cafés and shops. It’s hard to imagine a more relaxing way to enjoy your holiday.

Olive oil experience

Not far from Ronda is the La Almazara olive oil mill. It is part of LA Organic and produces high-quality organic olive oil. The facility houses a restaurant with a museum and is set in a picturesque backdrop of olive groves, vineyards and lavender fields. From the restaurant, which has been designed in a striking and very special way, you can enjoy fantastic views of the endless expanse of the Andalusian landscape.

During a guided tour, you will gain an insight into olive oil production and, of course, you can also taste the olive oil. Important: you should book the tour and tasting in advance.

Optional: Ubrique

If you have time and feel like it, you can make a short stop in Ubrique on your way to the coast. The village is also one of the Pueblos Blancos and boasts a colourful church on the main square. It is also known for its traditional leather production. It’s hard to believe that Spain’s main suppliers of the highest quality leather, which is sourced by world-renowned designers, are located here.

Ubrique is optional for your Andalusia road trip, but not a must-see.

Costa del Sol (at least 2 days)

What would a trip through Spain without a detour to one of its sun-kissed coasts? With at least 300 days of sunshine per year, the Costa del Sol lives up to its name and is the perfect place to relax and end your Andalusia road trip. The key question is whether you prefer a quieter or livelier atmosphere.

Quieter: The towns of Nerja and Estepona are located at the outer points of the Costa del Sol and exude a relaxed holiday atmosphere on beautiful beaches. Nerja is also famous for its coastal promenade, which runs along a rocky outcrop with breathtaking views of the sea and the surrounding mountains. Estepona charms visitors with its lovely, flower-filled old town.

Livelier: Marbella is not only more busy, but also more luxurious. Glamour, marinas, boutiques, a beautiful old town with dreamy alleys against a picturesque mountain backdrop characterise the city. Perhaps you would like to immerse yourself in this very special atmosphere and stroll through Marbella among the “rich and beautiful”. Of course, you will also find fantastic beaches for sunbathing and swimming here.

Activities:

• Beach walks
• Sunsets
• Beach clubs

Extra tip: I recommend visiting one of the numerous wineries on the Costa del Sol. It’s simply wonderful to stroll through the vineyards and enjoy delicious Spanish wine in the sun. For me, this is definitely a must-do during a Andalusia road trip.

Practical tips for your Andalusia road trip

Car hire

It is much more practical to rent a smaller car, as your Andalusia road trip will often take you along narrow roads.

Parking in old towns is usually difficult, so it is best to park just outside.

Timing

• Start early to avoid the crowds.
• Be aware of the midday heat in summer and always carry enough water with you.
• Avoid weekends for the more popular destinations such as Ronda or Seville.

Planning

Of course, you can also plan your road trip in the opposite direction. In this case, you could start on the Costa del Sol and then drive towards Seville.

In any case, plan your trip so that you can enjoy a stress-free time. So: don’t make too many stops, but really focus on quality instead of quantity. The journey itself is something very special and part of your experience. Just enjoy the dreamy landscapes, the sun and the Spanish way of life.

No. 4 – Cinque Terre & Portofino – a top travel destination in Italy

Cinque Terre

On the rugged Italian Riviera, there is a 12 kilometre stretch of coastline known as the Cinque Terre, which translates as Five Lands. This refers to five picturesque villages with a fairytale-like charm. It is wonderful to stroll through the small alleyways between cute, colourful houses or sit comfortably in one of the cafés and simply gaze over the turquoise blue water.

The names of the five villages are:

• Monterosso al Mare
• Vernazza
• Corniglia
• Manarola
• Riomaggiore

The Cinque Terre is best explored in two days with an overnight stay in one of the five small villages. However, it is better to leave your own car outside the national park, as it’s impossible to drive on the small roads and alleys. Instead take the train or the hiking trail that connects the Cinque Terre. The entire walking route takes around 6-7 hours in total and can therefore be ideally divided into several stages, with breaks in the villages and at viewpoints (more on this under ‘My tips’).

Portofino

Around 70 kilometres away from the Cinque Terre is the Ligurian village of Portofino – a former fishing village with a beautiful harbour where you can almost always marvel at the yachts that sometimes belong to celebrities who like to anchor here. During your stay, you should definitely take a stroll along the world-famous Piazzetta Martiri dell’Òlivetta. You can enjoy great food in the stylish restaurants and have a fantastic view of the marvelous backdrop.

March to September is the best time to explore the beautiful area in mild or warm temperatures and simply relax outside.

• the Pantheon – an ancient building that was later consecrated as a church, with the beautiful Trevi Fountain in front of it

No. 7 – Amalfi Coast & Naples

On the west coast, around 40 kilometres south of Naples, you will find another of Italy’s most beautiful destinations – the popular Amalfi Coast. This is where the dream of a beach holiday comes true, surrounded by beautiful nature and enchanting villages. Towering cliffs behind rugged beaches characterise the typical image of the Amalfi Coast. During a holiday, it is definitely worth exploring several places to experience the full beauty of the Amalfi Coast.

As already mentioned, the Amalfi Coast is located near Naples. You should definitely not miss the legendary city on your trip. According to a myth, Odysseus sailed in the dangerous waters off Naples and was bewitched by the sirens. However, he was able to escape them by tying himself to the mast. Naples is simply beautiful with its marvellous location at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. 

When is the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast & Naples?

The Amalfi Coast is a popular holiday destination not only for tourists but also for locals. You should therefore avoid the summer holidays. Late spring and the first months of autumn are best. You can swim and stroll through the villages in pleasant temperatures. It’s also not so hot if you want to explore Naples.

My tips for the Amalfi Coast

• the famous town of Positano, which was built on a rock, with the beautiful Positano Beach, which you should definitely visit at sunset
• Amalfi – a town absolutely worth seeing on the coast of the same name
• The cute little village of Ravello – for me one of the most beautiful on the Amalfi Coast – is located in the mountains and offers you a fantastic view over the entire coast.
• The island of Capri is only about 50-80 minutes away from the Amalfi Coast by ferry.
• Pompeii – very close to the Amalfi Coast. Probably the most famous archaeological site in the world, it was buried metres deep in 79 AD during a devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius and only discovered by chance in the middle of the 18th century.

My tips for Naples

• You should definitely take a stroll through the beautiful historic centre and enjoy the view of Mount Vesuvius from one of the many cafés.
• Naples Cathedral with its partly gilded coffered ceiling in the nave 
• the National Archaeological Museum, where you will find artefacts from Pompeii, among other things
• the Certosa di San Martino monastery, from where you have a breathtaking view over the city
• the Piazza del Plebiscito, where the beautiful church of San Francesco de Paola is located
• absolute must: Pizza Napoli – nowhere tastes better than here!

No. 8 – Sardinia – one of the top travel destinations in Italy

The beautiful island of Sardinia is also one of the most popular holiday destinations in Italy. No wonder, because with its kilometres of sandy beaches, bays, grottos and the turquoise blue sea, Italy’s second largest island is a true paradise and one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean.

When is the best time to visit Sardinia?

If you are planning a beach holiday, summer is of course the best time. But you will also find pleasant temperatures here in spring and autumn, as the sun shines in Sardinia around 300 days a year.

The small island of Gozo lies in the middle of the Mediterranean between North Africa and Sicily and is part of the archipelago state of Malta. With its small size of only around 67 square kilometres, it is the second largest island of the archipelago and is often referred to as the little sister of the main island of Malta. Despite its size Gozo has so much to offer – from picturesque bays and beaches with crystal clear, turquoise blue water, to breathtaking cliffs and rock formations, to idyllic villages with picturesque alleyways, baroque churches and great restaurants, you won’t miss anything in Gozo that makes for an adventurous but also relaxing holiday.

In this post, with the most beautiful sights in Gozo, I would like to introduce you to this special Maltese island and share its most beautiful places of this hidden gem with you. And I’m sure you’ll agree with me: Gozo is a real insider tip in Europe.

Why is Gozo worth a visit?

If you are looking for hustle and bustle and lively life, you should rather visit the main island of Malta, because Gozo stands for peace and relaxation. Immerse yourself in the unique nature with its fascinating cliffs and let yourself drift through the pretty alleyways of the original old towns, then you too will feel the special heartbeat of the beautiful island of Gozo.

The first settlers came to Malta as early as 5,200 BC. Over time, the islands came under Roman and Arab occupancy and later under European influence. This shaped its architecture and culture as well as the language of its inhabitants. Maltese sounds like a mixture of Italian and Arabic, but is written in Latin letters. Malta was also under British colonial rule until 1964, which is why almost all locals still speak English very well today and left-hand traffic is the norm on the islands.

When is the best time to visit Gozo, Malta ?

Its perfect location in the southern Mediterranean Sea gives the island of Gozo a pleasant, warm climate. It is therefore possible to travel there all year round. Even in winter, daytime temperatures of up to 17-20 degrees Celsius are not uncommon. The period between June and October is best for beach holidays, as the water temperature is always above 20 degrees Celsius and the weather warm and sunny. When planning your Gozo holiday, however, you should bear in mind that summers can generally get very hot and also attract more tourists.

How do you get to the island of Gozo?

As Gozo does not have an airport, you first land in Malta. Then take the ferry from the ferry harbour in Valletta, which is about 15-20 minutes from the airport. The ferries to Gozo depart every 20-25  minutes and it is not necessary to book a ticket in advance. The crossing is also possible with a car and payment is only made on the return journey to Malta. The two of us, including a car paid 20.35 Euros together for both ways.

How many days should you plan for your holiday in Gozo?

Ideally 2-3 days. The many great sights of Gozo are not far from each other – so you can organise your stay in a varied way and experience numerous unforgettable moments. You should definitely rent a car to explore the island in a relaxed way..

My hotel tip in Gozo

Cesca`s Boutique Hotel is a cozy hotel near Gozo`s capital Victoria. Nevertheless, it is quietly located on the slope of a river valley and you can look out of your room window directly into the green valley. There is also a pool with a view on the roof, but it was too cool for us when we travelled to Gozo in December.

The north coast of Gozo

The north coast is perfect for a short road trip. Various natural sights can be discovered along the rocky cliffs. As the route is partly off-road on uneven ways, it is good to rent a robust car to really enjoy the drive.

These are my favorite stops along the north coast of Gozo:

Wied il-Mielah rock window

Near the village of Ghar, directly on the cliffs of the island of Gozo, you will find the Wied il-Mielah Window – a gigantic rock window created by environmental influences. You have the option of parking nearby and taking a short walk to the rock gate. You can either look at it from above or walk down a small path and stand right in front of the window to watch the waves crash against the rocks. The view is truly spectacular and unforgettable. There is even a ladder leading into the sea. However, I wouldn’t recommend swimming here as the swell can be very strong.

Sand Waves

The Sand Waves are a beautiful attraction in Gozo – a rock formation where the soft stone has been shaped by water to look like large solidified waves. You can get up close and take some great photos.

Wied il-Ghasri Gorge

You will be really impressed by the view into this huge sea gorge, which is also called Ghasri Valley. With a length of 250 metres and a width of between 15 and 30 metres, the small fjord stretches towards the village of Ghasri. A short hiking trail into the gorge takes you to a small pebble beach. In summer, it is ideal for swimming and snorkelling. The water is calm and blue as it is protected from strong waves.

Xwejni salt pans

The salt pans on the island of Gozo are a truly unique sight. They are laid out in a chequerboard pattern and stretch for around three kilometres along the north coast. Salt was already being extracted here in Roman times. In summer, you can still see locals sweeping sea salt with rakes and brooms in the traditional way. When the sun shines on the pools, it makes for a fantastic photo opportunity.

Sunset on the west coast

The rocky coastline of Gozo is a great place to watch a beautiful sunset in the evening. A special spot is near Fungus Rock – a single large rock in the sea that rises up like a mushroom and offers a fantastic photo opportunity. Not far away is a popular diving spot, the Inland Sea. This picturesque bay is enclosed like a lake and is only connected to the sea by an approx. 80 metre long tunnel in the rock.

Definitely plan at least one sunset near Fungus Rock – just make sure the way sturdy shoes if you want to walk over the rocks as they are really sharp.

A Cycle tour along the south coast of the island of Gozo

The south coast of the island of Gozo has some of the most beautiful views in store for you. You can explore them by bike or e-bike. We opted for an e-bike as the route is quite steep in some places. We started in the capital Victoria, from where we headed to the south coast to the impressive Sanap Cliffs. The huge, majestic cliffs are a great photo opportunity, as they have a mysterious and majestic atmosphere.

The route continues to Mgarr ix-Xini beach, a small bay in the middle of beautiful nature with a gorge and a view of an old watchtower. The beach is ideal for swimming in summer and is a popular diving spot. The area around Malta and Gozo is one of the most popular diving spots in the world.

Ramla beach and secret cave

Ramla beach is one of the few sandy beaches and is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island of Gozo. Above the beach is a real hidden gem: the Tal-Mixta Cave, which for me is one of the most fascinating sights in Gozo. From here you have a fantastic view of the beach. To reach the cave, you can hike and climb up from the beach. Although the climb is short, it is very steep and strenuous. 

Another option would be to drive up to just before the entrance on the other side of the cave and enjoy the unique view from there. I’ve marked the nearby parking in my Gozo map.

Ta’ Pinu Church – one of Gozo’s most popular sights

Built in neo-Romanesque style and consecrated in 1932, the pilgrimage church was elevated to basilica status by Pope Pius Xl. in the same year. The beautiful mosaics on the forecourt and in the interior are characteristic. Its bell tower is 62 metres high. Inside the Ta’ Pinu church is a room with letters of thanksgiving and exhibits from numerous devout Maltese. Thanks to its location on a hill, the church offers a stunning view of the surrounding countryside.

Olive oil tasting Ta’ Mikiel

Here’s a very special tip: not far from the Ta`Pinu church is the small olive oil farm Ta’ Mikiel that is run by a family in the third generation. You can take part in a tour and marvel at the peaceful estate with its olive tree fields. Of course, this also includes a tasting of the olive oil with local bread, cheese and other Maltese specialities. You will have a fantastic view over the valley and the Ta’ Pinu church.

Another highlight – wine tasting in Gozo

If you like wine, I recommend you visit the Tal-Massar winery. Wine is a real rarity on the island of Gozo due to the limited space and is therefore rarely exported. In terms of flavour, Gozo’s wines are some of the best I have ever tasted and can certainly hold their own internationally. Thanks to the mild climate all year round, the wines are very low in acidity and full-bodied with intense flavours. You should definitely try them!

The capital Victoria

The capital of the island of Gozo is of course also worth a visit. It is centrally located in the middle of the island and has only been called Victoria since 1887 – in honour of the English Queen Victoria. It used to be called Rabat and many locals still call it that today.

My absolute highlight is the impressive citadel, which can be seen from afar as it is located on a rock. Its first construction already began in the Bronze Age 1,500 BC and the present fortification has been built in the 15th century in the form of a circular castle complex called Gran Castello, which was repeatedly refortified after raids and sieges. Until 1637, the inhabitants of Gozo were legally obliged to spend the night in the citadel for their protection.

From the complex you have a fantastic view over the island of Gozo. In its centre is the pretty Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which you should definitely visit. It is advisable to enquire in advance when masses are held in the cathedral, as it is closed to visitors during this time. A sign in front of the cathedrals entrance tells you about the closing times. There is also the opportunity to visit the old prison and a nature museum.

Almost 7000 inhabitants live in Victoria today. The main market square It-Tokk, which translates as ‘meeting place’, is a perfect place to stroll in the shade of the trees. Small souvenir shops and cosy cafés await you here. If you have time, I recommend visiting the impressive St. George’s Basilica, which is located not far from the market square. It was built in the 17th century and was badly damaged by an earthquake a short time later. As a result, it was not inaugurated until 1755.

Activity Tips in Gozo

Gozo also has plenty to offer for adventurous travelers. You can book a boat or kayak tour to the neighbouring island of Comino to explore caves, beautiful bays and beaches. The Blue Lagoon is absolutely enchanting with its crystal-clear, turquoise-blue water and exudes Caribbean flair. Another recommended activity is a guided Jeep tour through the beautiful landscape of the island of Gozo.

There is no question that the hidden gem Gozo is an absolute insider tip in Europe! The island next to Malta is the perfect place to enjoy some mild temperatures and sunshine in the cooler months and immerse yourself in a little paradise. With its fascinating landscape, surrounded by a deep blue sea, it literally invites you to take a trip. Combined with impressive evidence of its eventful history and the peace and quiet that radiates from it, you will spend a relaxing and unforgettable holiday im Gozo.

My Dolomites Travel Guide: The best places to visit

When is the best time to visit the Dolomites?

This question depends on your personal preferences and what exactly you want to experience during your visit. In this Travel Guide I mainly focus on hikes and places in the Dolomites which are great for the warmer months.

Spring and summer in the Dolomites begins quite a bit later than in other parts of South Europe. Even in May and the beginning of June some trails are still closed due to snow. Mid June the spring arrives in the mountains of the Dolomites and creates deep green meadows with colorful wild flowers.
Instead the sunny days last until mid autumn: We once been to the Dolomites in the middle of October and had the perfect mid 20 degrees Celsius hiking weather with perfect sunshine all day long.

To avoid the busy summer holidays in Europe – which are between July and August – the best months to visit the Dolomites are September until the end of October. But again: The Dolomites are definitely worth a visit throughout the whole year!

How many days are ideal to visit the best places in the Dolomites?

Many of the best places in the Dolomites can only be reached during hikes and I would definitely plan enough time to really soak in the mountain magic of this place: That’s why five to seven days are ideal to explore the Dolomites – even ten when you want to have more time to relax and/or hike.

How to get around in the Dolomites?

To stay flexible during your Dolomites trip I can’t recommend a car high enough! Of course there are trains and busses available as well – but a car will make traveling through the Dolomites a lot easier and saves you tons of time as well.

We drove with our own car from Germany to Italy but if your home destination is further away you can easily fly to one of the nearby airports in Austria (Innsbruck) or Italy (Venice, Verona, Trieste or Treviso) and make this as your start and end point of your road trip to the most beautiful places in the Dolomites.

Which languages are spoken in the Dolomites?

Even though the Dolomites are located in the Northern part of Italy, it often feels like you’re either in Austria or Switzerland. The cities, lakes and other places in the Dolomites all have a German and an Italian name. In fact the majority of the locals speak German in the country side while you’ll hear more Italian in the big cities and the further you get South.

If you don’t speak German or Italian – never mind: Like in most European places, the majority of the people working in the tourism sector are speaking at least a bit of English. Especially the young generation will help you out in English as well while it might get a bit difficult to communicate with older people living in the country side.

Packing list for the Dolomites:

• a reusable water bottle – the water in the mountains of the Dolomites is fresh and drinkable straight from the tap or at sources you’ll find during hikes. Simply fill up a reusable bottle at your hotel or in restaurants instead of buying bottled water.
  → This is my favorite reusable bottle – light and beautiful!
• layers of clothes – even though you’re traveling to the Dolomites during the peak of summertime, the temperatures can vary a lot in the valley and at mountain peaks. That’s why packing thin jackets and/or sweaters to layer are a must!
  → I always find the cutest light jackets and sweaters HERE!
• sun blocker – the UV radiation in the mountains is quite high and at the top of the mountains you’ll often experience a sunny clear weather. Save your face, neck, arms and shoulders with a good SPF.
• back pack – this might sound obvious but is really important! A backpack is an essential kit for your dolomites adventures to pack all the mentioned items above plus snacks for your hikes
  → This is the back pack I always have with me – on all our travels!

The best places to visit in the Dolomites

Lago di Carezza / Karersee

Even though this lake was much smaller than I always imagined it, the Lago di Carezza definitely belongs to the best places to visit in the Dolomites! It is a turquoise colored lake which perfectly reflects the peaks of the Latemar mountain range behind it. The size of the lake drastically varies throughout the year since Lago di Carezza is glacier fed – just like most mountain lakes in the Dolomites. After the winter season, when the glaciers start to melt, the water level is rising which then again reduces during the warm summer and autumn months. That’s why Lago di Carezza has bees very small during our visit mid October.

Accessing the lake is super easy: Park your car just across the street and walk the easy trail around the lake. The best spots to photograph the lake with the famous reflection are either from the wooden platform at the beginning of the trail or if you follow the path a few steps to the left.

Alpe di Siusi / Seiser Alm – the best place to visit in the Dolomites

One of the first pictures you’ll have in mind when hearing about the Dolomites is probably the iconic view at the Alpe di Siusi. With a size of more than 56 km² it is the largest expand of high alpine meadowland in Europe and without any doubt one of the most beautiful places in the Dolomites.

How to get to Alpe di Siusi?

Reaching the Alpe di Siusi definitely needs some planning cause it’s not possible to drive up by car at any time. Here are the most common ways to reach Alpe di Siusi:

• by car: A winding road leads up to a parking lot (cost: 18,- EUR per day in cash) at the small village Compatsch at the Alpe di Siusi. It is a gated road and closed between 9am and 5pm. So you either have to drive up before 9am or after 5pm – which might be too late if you want to experience the full beauty of the area.
• by cable car: There are tow gondolas which lead up to the Alpe die Siusi:
  1) From Ortisei / St. Ulrich: between 8.30am – 5pm (until 6pm from mid June – mid September ) for 20,90 EUR (two ways / per adult)
  2) From Siusi / Seis: between 8am – 6pm (until 7pm from mid June – mid September ) for 19 EUR (two ways / per adult)
  But note that all cable cars are only opened from mid May until the beginning of November.
• the easiest way: To be fully flexible during your visit I can highly recommend to book a hotel for one night at the Alpe di Siusi! This way you will get a special permit from your hotel to drive up to the Alpe during any time of the day (only on your check-in day), park your car at your hotel and don’t have to worry about reaching the last cable car going down while shooting the sunset. The next day you can drive back down during any time of the day.

What are the most photogenic spots at Alpe di Siusi?

While the whole area looks like out of a picture book, there are two spots which are especially photogenic:

• Overlooking the two mountain peaks Langkofel (Sasso Lungo) and Plattkofel (Sasso Piatto) from the soft meadow hills.
• The swings at the little alpine restaurant Malga Sanon.

You can find the exact coordinates for both spots in my map at the end of this post!

Seceda

My personal second favorite place in the Dolomites – after the Alpe di Siusi – is the Seceda peak. 2,500 m above sea level this surreal scene seams to be from another world…

There are different ways to reach the top: either during a hike from the Col Raiser cable car station or if you’re not in the mood or don’t have the time for a three hours hike, you can simply take the two cable cars which lead from Ortisei / St. Ulrich up to the summit.

The cable car is open during the summer season and winter season as well, but the exact opening hours and prices change seasonally so definitely check out the current details on this website (click either “summer nature” or “ski area” in the menu to find the summer & winter details)

From the cable car station at the top, follow the path along the little restaurant and the summit cross, further to the left to find the most beautiful view point and photo opportunity at Seceda. But be careful – there are no barriers at this spot and the drop is pretty high!

Tre Cime di Lavaredo

This spot is probably on every traveler’s agenda in the Dolomites – and for a good reason. The famous Three Peaks are the most famous rock formation in the Dolomites.

This is the most important info for your hike to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo:

The hike begins at the parking lot of the Refugio Auronzo mountain hut, in which, by the way, you can also stay overnight at a reasonable price. The entrance for the Tre Cime Natural Park costs 30€ per car and day. (If you drive in after 7pm, the following day is included). The start of the hike is behind the mountain hut and you can’t miss it. For the whole circuit around the Tre Cime di Lavaredo you should plan about 5 hours. And now the good news: it is one of the few places in the world where you should not be there early to miss the biggest crowds, but rather late. Starting your hike around the Three Peaks in the afternoon has many more advantages: Significantly fewer people on the trails, open space for drone shots and the best light for photos! The sun comes around the Three Peaks only after noon and illuminates them in the evening in a great orange light.

Insider tip: Only 30 minutes from the same parking lot is the overlook of the impressive Cadini di Misurnia! A popular photo spot in the Dolomites. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it to this spot ourselves after our Tre Cime di Lavaredo hike.

Lago di Braies / Pragser Wildsee – the most famous place in the Dolomites

The most famous and photographed mountain lake in the Dolomites area is the Lago di Braies. It can easily be reached by car and you’ll find several parking lots just a few steps away from the lake.
During the day you can rent boats to float on the crystal clear water which beautifully reflects the surrounding mountain peaks. Especially the boat deck is a beloved setting for photographers from all over the world during sunrise. The boat renting service only opens at 9.30am but before that the deck will be not accessible. So you either have to wait for the opening to take your photos – when the place will most likely be crowded already – or book a private slot with the company to take photos during sunrise just by yourself! Of course the company knows that their deck is a famous photo location so they charge more than a 100 EUR for this time slot!

If that’s too much for you to pay for just one iconic photo – never mind: There are countless other photo locations at the lake. Especially in the early morning, when the mountain peaks get lit up by the sun. Make sure to plan time for a little hike which leads one time around the lake and offers many beautiful perspectives and sights. The whole round tour will take you around 1 – 1,5 hrs.

Other places you need to visit in the Dolomites:

The last time we’ve been to the Dolomites we had our senior dog lady with us and had to skip a few amazing hikes and views which would be too tough for her. Other places are easier to reach but we just didn’t had the time for them unfortunately.
Here is a list of incredible places in the Dolomites which we want to visit the next time and that you should put to your itinerary as well:

• Tre Cime di Lavaredo / Drei Zinnen: Probably the most famous and remarkable mountain peaks in the Dolomites. Plan at least half a day for this beautiful place in the Dolomites since there are many hikes to do, views to enjoy and hundreds of photo opportunities. Arrive early to park your car at “Parkplatz zu den Drei Zinnen” (30,- EUR per car) – already at 9 am you will most likely have to wait in line in front of the parking lot.
•  Lago di Dobbiaco – a beautiful lake, close to the Tre Cime National Park. It is a cute place to take photos or for a pic nic in the summertime.
• Vajolet Towers – three concentrated mountain peaks which are a breathtaking sight. They are lesser known and crowded than the famous Tre Cime and can be reached via a hike which is a bit more intense. But the views are definitely worth it!
• Rifugio Odle / Geisler Alm – a beautiful place which can be reached on a picturesque loop trail called “Adolf Munkel Trail”. You’ll have spectacular views throughout the hike and can enjoy some great local food at the Geisler Alm restaurant during a break.
• Val di Funes – A picture perfect valley in the Dolomites. Especially the little village Santa Maddalena offers countless photography opportunities.
• Lago di Sorapis – The bluest mountain lake in the Dolomites which can only be reached via a 12km hike. For this reason Lago di Sorapis is less crowded than the easy accessible lakes like Lago di Braies.

The best place to stay in the Dolomites

If you want to spoil yourself a bit after days of hiking and exploring I can’t recommend you the incredible Forestis Dolomites high enough! The beauty of this Italian city goes far beyond its history and architecture. Its location in the middle of stunning Tuscany and its culinary diversity make it a true gem. In this post, I’d like to share with you my personal recommendations for the most beautiful sights in Florence plus the best day trips outside of the city. Best Tourist Attractions in Florence, Italy

The majestic Duomo di Firenze

The Duomo di Firenze is undoubtedly one of the most impressive sights in Florence. Admission is free, though there is a charge to climb the dome. However, the interior of the cathedral is less imposing than the exterior. If you want to visit the cathedral, I recommend getting there early to enjoy Florence’s most famous landmark without large crowds. Admission starts at 10:15, but for beautiful photos from the outside, it’s worth getting there just after sunrise.

The charming Ponte Vecchio

A walk across the Ponte Vecchio is an absolute must. This famous bridge, more than 1000 years old, is lined with jewelry stores and small boutiques and offers a beautiful view of the river Arno. The bridge is not only a great photo motif, but also invites you to stroll through the little shops.
Tip: Among the restaurant and bar tips for Florence you will find a great bar with the ideal view of the Ponte Vecchio!

The magnificent Palazzo Vecchio

Another highlight is the Palazzo Vecchio, an imposing building with a rich history. Here you can walk through the magnificent halls and admire the impressive works of art. A visit is definitely worth it to feel the historical atmosphere.

Art at the Uffizi Gallery

For art lovers, a visit to the Uffizi Gallery is an absolute must. Here you can marvel at masterpieces like Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” and be enchanted by the beauty of the artworks. Plan enough time to explore all the highlights of the gallery.

Buchette del Vino – The Wine Windows

An absolute highlight in Florence are the Buchette del Vino, also known as wine windows. Originally they were created during the time of the plague, but at least since the pandemic they have once again become a popular attraction for tourists. The Oldest Pharmacy Santa Maria Novella & Basilica

Be sure to visit the Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy, the oldest pharmacy still in operation in Italy and probably the oldest in the world. Founded as early as 1221, the building includes a basilica where monks lived and grew herbs the garden to make balsams and other medicines. Immerse yourself in the history of medicine and explore the fascinating world of this unique pharmacy. Of course, the basilica itself is also worth a visit!

The magnificent Palazzo Patti and the Boboli Gardens

Palazzo Patti with its impressive Boboli Gardens is another highlight in Florence. It was once the palace of the Medici family and impresses with its magnificent architecture. Today, several galleries and museums are located in the palace, such as the Galleria Palatina with masterpieces by Rubens, Raphael and Co.

The extensive Boboli Gardens, surround the palace like an oasis of tranquility where you can escape the hustle and bustle. Stroll through the beautiful gardens, discover romantic grottos and water features and statues and enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the surrounding nature.

The magical sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo

For the best view of the city at sunset, you should definitely visit Piazzale Michelangelo. You’ll have to climb a few steps first, but the gorgeous view and romantic atmosphere will make up for the effort. Take a bottle of wine or beer with you to celebrate the moment and watch the city turn into the most beautiful orang and pink colors.

Addition – SECRET TIP: During our second visit in Florence we came back to this spot but found it extremely crowded! Which is why we searched for an alternative view with less crowds – AND WE FOUND IT! Search for the “Basilica di San Miniato” – just a few minutes from the Piazzale Michelangelo. You can walk down to the Terrazzo San Miniato for the same view but just a hand full of other people – it’s a real hidden gem!

• Chic Nonna €€€€ – very upscale cuisine, but probably one of the best dinners in the whole city! The restaurant is located in the Hotel Palazzo Portinari Salviati in a historic setting.
• Bar of Hotel Lugano €€€ – the ideal spot for a cocktail or aperitif on the hotel’s terrace overlooking the medieval bridge Ponte Vecchio (especially impressive at night).
• Osteria del Proconsolo €€ – incredibly delicious pasta dishes.
• Gustarium Firenze € – ideal for lunch or as a snack. This place has unique pizza, which is sold in individual pieces and can’t be compared to anything I’ve tried before.

Pisa – More than just the leaning tower

A day trip to Pisa is an absolute must if you find yourself in Florence, as the drive takes only a little over an hour. Of course, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is the city’s most famous landmark, and you should definitely climb the 241 steps to enjoy the breathtaking view from the top. Climbing the tower, due to the incline, feels like you’re drunk!
But Pisa has much more to offer! Stroll through the narrow streets of the old town, discover charming squares and visit the impressive Duomo and Baptistery.

Tuscany wine region – a pleasure for the senses

Tuscany is famous for its picturesque landscape, delicious wine and exquisite cuisine. A day trip to the Tuscany wine region is a real treat for the senses. What is Mont Saint-Michel famous for?

The island has been a pilgrimage site for christians since the 8th century. Since the late 9th century an abbey has been built which got renewed and extended throughout the following centuries. During the French Revolution in the 18th century, the abbey got closed and used as a prison for political opponents.

Today there are again a handful of nuns and monks living in the Mont Saint-Michel Abbey and it still attracts pilgrims from all around the world.

Around the abbey is a medieval village with a bit less than 50 inhabitants – including the nuns and monks, living in the abbey. A stroll through the village is absolutely worth a visit. Stroll through the cute little alleys and shops around every corner and enjoy a traditional Crepes or Galette.

But be prepared to walk a lot of stairs, since the island is a mountain with the abbey on its highest point! 

How to get to Mont Saint-Michel?

The easiest way to reach Mont-Saint Michel is by car. The close surrounding of the island are only accessible for the cars of locals or for guests which booked a hotel in the area. (Which definitely makes sense if you plan to stay over night to watch the sunset and sunrise!)

From the mainland you have to cross the bridge which connects the land and the island by foot, bicycle or shuttle bus. Walking takes around 30 mins and offers great views on the way there. However the bus shuttle is much quicker and is completely free! The first bus drives you to the island at 7.30 am in the morning and the last one after sunset. What is the best time to visit Mont Saint-Michel?

The fairytale island is a wonderful destination throughout the whole year, while summer is probably the best time to watch the late & colorful sunsets and enjoy the sunny weather of the Normandy. But keep in mind that Mont Saint-Michel is one of the most famous sights in France and attracts most visitors during the warm summer months. That’s why the shoulder seasons in late spring or late summer / early autumn are a better choice.

Another great tip to beat the crowds is to plan your visit in the early morning OR late afternoon, before sunset, when the tours already departed. The abbey opens at 9am in the morning and closes at 7pm but the village itself doesn’t have an opening time. Midday, when most visitors stroll through Mont Saint-Michel, is the ideal time to visit some of the surrounding sights like Omaha Beach.

Good to know: A ticket for the Mont Saint-Michel abbey costs 11,- EUR per adult and is free if you’re 25 or younger. Make sure to book a ticket and time slot online to skip the line!

Mont Saint-Michel is famous for its tides. During low tide you can completely walk around the island and photograph it from unique perspectives but always have the tides in mind! When it is coming back, the water runs back extremely fast and it happens several times each year that visitors underestimate the change of the tides and have to be rescued out of the water.

The highest differences between low and high tide is usually during full moon with a tidal range of 15m / 49 ft – which is the highest range in Europe!

How many days are ideal for a visit at Mont Saint-Michel?

I would suggest to spend at least one sunset and one sunrise at Mont Saint-Michel to take photos and one early morning or late afternoon to explore the village and visit the abbey.

That’s why it is a great idea to spend one night at a hotel close to the connection bridge, like the → Mercure Hotel Mont Saint-Michel or stay on the island itself. But to take photos with the island in the background during the early morning or sunset it is definitely better to stay on the mainland.

Now finally the answer to all the questions I got after I posting my Normandy content on Social Media: What are the best photo spots at Mont Saint-Michel and how can I find them?

You can find the exact location of all three photo spots we visited on the map below and a description, how to reach them further down:

Mont Saint-Michel photo spot 1: Low tide beach

Of course this spot is only accessible during low tide and as I already mentioned above, you have to be extremely careful with the changing tides when visiting this spot! → Make sure to check the tidal plan before your visit here!

As soon as you crossed the bridge from the mainland to the island, go right and walk a few minutes around it until you reach the location I marked in the map (it may differ, depending on how high the tide is during your visit). The ground is extremely muddy and wet from the sea water so be prepared to get dirty shoes!

Mont Saint-Michel photo spot 2: Sunrise view

To watch the sunrise behind Mont Saint-Michel, you have to be positioned on the left side of the bridge, on the mainland. The spot I marked in the map can easily be reached when you take the walkway to the left, when you stand in front of the entrance of the connecting bridge. Follow this way until you reach a dam. From here, walk along the pathway a few minutes towards the island until you can’t get any closer. For photos it is a nice perspective when the photographer is standing on the dam while the model walks on the meadow below, with the iconic shape of Mont Saint-Michel in the background. But of course this spot looks also impressive without any model at all!

Mont Saint-Michel photo spot 3: „River“ View

Now my favorite view point to overlook and photograph Mont Saint-Michel: The uniquely shaped „riverbank“ during sunset!

To reach this particular location you can either follow a path from the connection bridge to the right OR you park your car close to the Auberge Hotel and walk for a few minutes – which is much more convenient. Find the start point of the walkway next to a sheep farm, and walk through the wooden gateway to reach the meadow. It is usually open and a beloved walkway for locals as well. In case it might be closed, there is a step attached to the fence which makes it easy to walk over it.

After a short distance you will also see the unique geometrical shape of the river bank which is only filled with water if the tide is extremely high. This only happens a few times per year. But even without any water, it makes a unique foreground for sunset photos with the Mont Saint-Michel behind it. During the summer months the sunset is quite late but it is absolutely worth the waiting!

P.S. If you come to the same spot in the morning you will meet some sheep feeding grass and laying in the sun – this can be a nice motive for photos as well!

After visiting Mont Saint-Michel, it quickly became one of my favorite destinations in Europe! Not only because it is so picturesque but also thanks to it’s one of a kind location and medieval charm. So beside taking outstanding photos at this spot, make sure to give your camera a break to soak in the special atmosphere of Mont Saint-Michel and feel like stepping back in time!

As the centre of the three Baltic states, Latvia is located directly on the Baltic Sea and therefore not only impresses with lots of nature and charming villages, but also with endless white sandy beaches, where you won’t meet a single person for miles. In this post I will tell you the most beautiful sights and places to visit in Latvia, which you simply can’t miss:

Riga – the capital of Latvia

For those traveling by plane, a trip to Latvia begins and ends in the capital city of Riga. This was also the case for us, so we decided to spend some time in the Latvian capital. These are my highlights, which you must put on your list for a visit to Riga:

The Art Nouveau Centre

One area in Riga where there is something to discover at every corner is the Art Nouveau district with impressive houses built between 1904 and 1914. The facades are reminiscent of works of art and are decorated with frescoes and sculptural masterpieces typical of the Art Nouveau period.

For a coffee or lunch stop I can recommend the small restaurant Rasols, which is decorated even from the inside in Art Nouveau style and offers typical Latvian dishes.

A walk from the restaurant leads you through the Art Nouveau district, past the National Theater to the main square with the Freedom Monument and the passage to the beautiful Old Town of Riga, which is an enchanting sight in Latvia.

The most beautiful part of the city and an UNESCO World Heritage Site is the Old Town of Riga with numerous colorful houses, charming restaurants, shops and churches. It is worthwhile to stroll through the streets and explore the small alleys.

You should not miss the St. Peter’s Church! From the church tower you have a great view, which makes it undoubtedly one of the most beautiful sights in Latvia. St. Peter’s Church is located right in the center of the city and offers a panoramic view of the entire city, including the old town and the other side of the river Daugava.

Although the entrance fee is 9 Euros per person, it is worth every penny and you can use the elevator to the top of the tower and enjoy the view!

Tip: If you want to see and experience Latvian culture up close, you can stop by the store Tautas terpu centrs Sena klets. Here, traditional Latvian costumes are still made, displayed and sold. They differ depending on the region and are still worn for festivities in modern times. I slipped right into one of the costumes and was thrilled! What do you think about my Latvian outfit?

The National Library

On the other side of the river Daugava is the National Library, which is also worth a visit. Built in 1919, it is an architectural unicum and not only a simple library but also a museum about the evolution of books, writing and language. A must for all bookworms – even if you don’t speak Latvian.

Restaurant recommendation in Riga

In the evening we went to the restaurant Herbārijs, which I can highly recommend, both from the location as well as from the service and the menu. It is located ON top of a shopping mall. Yes, you read that right! Due to its location above the rooftops of the city, Herbārijs Restaurant and Bar offers a great view. This is enhanced by the fact that it is located in a glass building, which looks like a greenhouse – hence the name. Whether you’re stopping by for dinner or just to taste the great cocktails. A visit is always worthwhile!

Sights in Latvia outside Riga

Bauska Castle

Less than an hour south of Riga thrones the 15th century Bauska Castle. It stands out because of its location at a fork where two rivers meet and wind around the castle. Unfortunately, we did not have time to explore the interior of the castle, which houses a museum that illustrates life in the castle and the history of Latvia. It is definitely worth a visit if you have time!

Rundāle Castle – The Most Beautiful Sight in Latvia

A must-see in Latvia: Rundāle Castle is THE sight in Latvia and also called the Versailles Palace of the Baltic States. And for good reason: already from the outside the castle from the 18th century impresses with its baroque facade, but latest after entering the palace every visitor will be enchanted. The rooms have been beautifully restored and furnished with impressive exhibits such as furniture and paintings. It transported me directly to another time. Especially the large main hall is fairytale-like.

The Rundāle Castle is an insider tip in Europe and much cheaper and less visited than the Versaille Castle in France. For just 8 Euros per adult, both the interior and the romantic gardens of the castle can be explored. Especially in summer, the garden is a dream, as numerous flowers and roses are grown in beautiful formations.

Kemeri National Park

This Latvian attraction impresses with its pure nature! Much of the area consists green forests, but mainly of bogs with lakes and lagoons. A hiking trail on footbridges leads directly over the water surface and past idyllic places. You get the best view from the observation tower, which is signposted with arrows. It is a truly fairytale scenery, which I have never seen in this way anywhere else in Europe.

Tip: Especially at sunrise, the atmosphere in Kemeri National Park is magical. When the sun rises above the trees, the moor is surrounded by mystical mist and the sky reflected in the still water. We were there early in the morning, but unfortunately it was a very cloudy day, so we didn’t get to see the sunrise. Nevertheless, our visit was worthwhile. The Kemeri National Park is not to be missed in Latvia.

The Abavas Winery

Wine in Latvia? Sounds untypical, but it actually exists. Abavas winery is one of the northernmost places in the world where wine is grown. During the harsh Latvian winters, only a few grape varieties survive, but the owner puts all his heart and soul into this project. In addition to classic white and red grape wines, the finest ciders and other fruit wines are produced here. For example, a rhubarb sparkling wine, which has been really good! The tasting & tour at the Abavas winery was something very special and should not be missed on your trip through Latvia!

Kuldīga (Ventas Rumba Waterfall)

The small dreamy town of Kuldīga attracts both Latvian and international tourists. This is primarily due to the Ventas Rumba waterfall – a well-known sight in Latvia. It is only about 2m high, but a full 110m wide, which makes it the widest waterfall in Europe! You can enjoy the best view from the brick bridge that crosses the river. In spring and summer you often see fish migrating upstream to spawn and jumping out of the water. The spectacle is repeated every year and is very popular with visitors.

But also the small old town is worth a visit. Many artists have settled here and have set up their studios in Kuldīga. For the afternoon or evening, you must stop by the DUNA brewery to taste Latvian beer. In the courtyard of the premises, there is also a great restaurant and live music is played.

Hotel recommendation in Kuldīga

For me, the most beautiful hotel we stayed at during our trip through Latvia has been the Hotel Simanis. It is an old barn, which was converted into a boutique hotel with only a few rooms. Very cozy and unique with a historical interior and delicious breakfast.

Liepāja

The third largest city in Latvia, Liepāja is located in the west of the country, directly on the Baltic Sea. For this reason, the port city attracts many tourists, especially in the summertime. Nevertheless, you will find fewer people and still empty beaches, which would be unthinkable on the German or Polish Baltic coast, especially in summer!

On the beach of Liepāja we experienced one of the most fantastic sunsets ever. Especially with the ruins of the old fortress of Liepāja this resulted in a magical atmosphere. Constructed between 1894 to 1903, the Russian fortress was built around the entire city to protect it from attacks. Today, the remains have sunk into the sand and are slowly being washed into the Baltic Sea. Walking along the ruins, you can always discover great photo opportunities or wall paintings. So it’s not only a great place to relax but also worth a visit for street art fans.

Another famous sight of Latvia is located in Liepāja: the old military prison Karosta. It served as an internment camp for soldiers for various governments over the years and was decommissioned only in the 90s. Even in sunny weather, it exudes a mystical atmosphere and some people are even convinced that it’s haunted! Visitors get up close and personal with the former prison activities during an interactive tour. Even to the point that the prison offers overnight stays, which to my surprise are very well booked. I loved the tour, but I wouldn’t want to sleep in such a spooky place… but maybe it’s an interesting idea for you?

Restaurant Tips in Liepaja

• Parka Paviljons – A magical restaurant and cafe in the park of Liepaja, which impresses with its artistic architecture and has already received several awards. So be sure to stop by here during the day for lunch or a coffee!
• Museum Restaurant Hoijeres krogs – A restaurant in the style of an old 17th century pub with old recipes. While your meal gets prepared, you can admire the interior of the typical Latvian 17th century home on the first floor, while the house upstairs is designed as it was typical in the 19th century. So in just a few minutes you can travel through time. A lot of love was put into every detail of the interior with original furniture and objects, which are fully functional. The museum restaurant is definitely worth a visit!

Other sights in Latvia

…which we unfortunately didn’t mange to visit due to lack of time, but want to see during our next visit:

• Cēsis – An enchanting small town with an impressive castle ruin.
• Jurmala – The closest Baltic seaside resort to Riga, which is ideal for a few days of seaside vacation.
• Gauja National Park – The largest and oldest national park in Latvia offers a variety of different landscapes with green forests, sandstone groups and blue rivers. Ideal for hikes while enjoying the nature, tranquility and unique scenery. A highlight is the Gutmans Cave, which can be visited.

The special thing about Latvia is on the one hand the culture and the people, as on the other hand the endless tranquility and miles of untouched nature.

Latvians love to share their traditions and the sights of their country with visitors. No matter where we traveled, we were always warmly welcomed. In addition, Latvians speak amazingly good English – even the older generation – which makes communication very easy.

However, if you want to be by yourself, you will find more than enough quiet places in Latvia: Be it the dense forests or the empty beaches. In Latvia you can escape from the hustle and bustle.

The heart of the Baltic States attracts visitors especially from mid-spring to early autumn with its blooming nature, reasonable prices, good food and great hospitality. We were definitely not the last time in Latvia, as there are still so many highlights to explore!

Prague is always worth a trip! We visit the Czech capital at least two or three times each year and always discover new places and sights. In this article I will not only tell you the best things to do in Prague but also share with you great insider tips and my favorite photo spots in Prague as well as useful information for your trip! At the end of the post you will find a map of Prague with all mentioned places in this post.

The best things to do in Prague with map and insider tips

When is the best time to visit Prague?

Prague has a very special charm in every season. However, especially during the winter and Christmas season, the medieval old town of Prague is transformed into a fairytale backdrop. But even in the warm seasons, Prague has a lot to offer. Its many beer gardens and restaurants along the Vltava make Prague a destination worth visiting all year round.

How many days should you visit Prague for?

Two to three days are enough to get a first good impression of the city and the best things to do, making Prague ideal for a weekend destination. However, if you would like to discover the city with more peace and time and maybe visit one or the other museum, then I would recommend four days.

How to reach Prague the easiest way?

Prague is very easy to reach by car from Germany, as there has been a continuous motorway from Dresden to Prague for a few years now and the Czech capital can be reached in just two hours. Long-distance buses also offer good connections to Prague from many German cities. The train is an uncomplicated alternative as well.

Flying into Prague is also an easy and comfortable alternative. The international airport PRG is only 25 minutes by car from the old town center.

What are the best hotels in Prague?

We have two favorite hotels in Prague, which are absolutely recommendable and have a top location for sightseeing tours:

→ Our favorite hotel in Prague is the MGallery Hotel Century Old Town Prague, which, as the name suggests, is located in the middle of the old town. The Charles Bridge can be reached in just a few minutes on foot. The hotel is located in a baroque building where the writer Franz Kafka worked for several years. The interior of the 4 star hotel was recently renovated, with great rooms that are all reminiscent of Kafka.

→ The Four Seasons Hotel Prague offers what is probably the most beautiful view of the Vltava River and Prague Castle. Many rooms as well as the roof terrace and restaurants in the hotel offer a great panoramic view.

What are the best things to do in Prague you can’t miss? 

Let’s now come to my favorite sights and insider tips in Prague, which you definitely shouldn’t miss. You will also find my favorite photo spots as well as bars and restaurants of this most beautiful city and a map with all exact locations at the very end.

Prague Old Town

For me, Prague has one of the most beautiful historical old towns in Europe. The first traders settled here as early as the 12th and 13th centuries. The facades of the houses are a mixture of baroque and gothic styles and are still very well preserved, since fortunately Prague was spared bomb attacks during the Second World War.

Famous highlights of the Old Town Square, the oldest central square in the city, are the well-known Church of our Lady before Tyn, the St. Nicholas Cathedral and the Old Town Hall with the astronomical clock from 1410, which performs a small spectacle every full hour. For this reason, a crowd of people gathers in front of the clock 10-15 minutes before each hour to watch the figures make their rounds.

The Gothic tower of the town hall can be visited, where you can enjoy a great view over the square and the city.

Prague Insider Tip: The roof terrace with the most beautiful view in Prague – Terasa U Prince

Right next to the town hall you will find the rooftop bar Teresa U Prince with probably the most beautiful and photogenic view in Prague. After entering the hotel, you walk through the lobby to the glass elevator, which takes you up to the top floor. Here you have to climb a few more steps to reach the small bar. You can either order food or just drinks (even in winter!), but the highlight is without a doubt the unique view.

I would recommend making a reservation at the weekend, but you can usually stop by spontaneously on weekdays.

Extra tip: In the basement of the Hotel U Prince you will find a completely different bar, which, in my opinion, is one of the best in the city: In the Back Angels you can enjoy unique cocktails in a wonderful 1930s ambience. The bar has already received several awards and is an absolute insider tip in Prague.

The Charles Bridge

Probably the best-known and most famous thing to do in Prague is a walk over the medieval Charles Bridge, which has been connecting the Old Town (Staré Mesto) and the Lesser Town (Malá Strana) since 1402. The bridge is one of the oldest stone bridges in Europe. Open to pedestrians only, it is lined with 30 sculptures. On the bridge itself you will meet many artists and craft vendors during the day. A walk through the distinctive Old Town Bridge Tower and across the bridge therefore feels like a journey into the past.

Due to the popularity of the Charles Bridge, it gets very busy during the day. My advice is that, for great photos you have to wake up very early, but it’s worth it: the sun rises directly behind the Old Town Bridge Tower. If the weather is good, you still won’t be alone, but likely meet some photographers.

Prague Insider Tip: Little Venice of Prague

The small Vltava island Kampa is also known as Prague’s “Little Venice” which is a truly fitting name. A small side canal of the Vltava leads past historical buildings and there are many small shops and restaurants to discover. In one particular small restaurant you can even sit directly on small balconies over the water. You’ll find it right next to the bridge at the “old water wheel“. It is easy to find and of course I marked it in the Prague map below.

It’s also the place where you’ll find the famous John Lennon wall. A huge wall full of art pieces and quotes inspired by John Lennon, The Beatles and travelers from all around the world.

You can reach Kampa by walking down the small staircase that starts at the edge of the Charles Bridge (if you are coming from the direction of the Old Town, the steps are on the left hand side, just before the end of the bridge).

Photo Spot in Prague: The Swan river bank at the Vltava

You can find one of my favorite photo spots in Prague just a few minutes away from the Charles Bridge. On the Lesser Town side (Malá Strana) you’ll find a shallow river bank at the Vltava river where you can find swans (and sometimes even beavers) all year around! With the Charles bridge and the rooftops of the old town in the background, they make a beautiful photo motive. I marked the exact location on my Prague map below.

Malá Strana – Lesser Town of Prague

Malá Strana, also known as Prague’s Lesser Town, is located on the other side of the Vltava and is by no means “lesser” but just as worth a visit as the old town. Here you will find lots of good restaurants with a great ambience and small winding streets with cute shops to browse through.

Well-known sights of Prague’s Lesser Town are the John Lennon Wall and of course the Prague Castle on the hill.

The Prague Castle

The huge Prague Castle from the 9th century is the symbol of the Czech Republic and the largest closed castle complex in the world! A visit belongs without any doubt to the best things to do in Prague! In the complex you will find several museums, palaces, churches, parks and more, which is why it is one of the most famous sights in Prague. Particularly impressive and well-known is the Gothic St. Vitus Cathedral with its 99 meter high main tower, which can also be visited.

Insider tip: The “Golden Lane” is part of the Prague Castle. The street takes its visitors back in time, with cute houses where goldsmiths and alchemists worked after the 16th century. The well-known writer Franz Kafka even lived here in the house with the number 22.

Incidentally, an entrance fee only has to be paid until 6 p.m. to visit the Golden Lane. After that, entry is free as all buildings are closed. However, if you just want to admire the ambiance and architecture of the famous little street, then this is the ideal time.

Prague’s Restaurant & Bar insider tips

Culinary Prague is primarily known for its good Bohemian cuisine, but the big city has a lot more to offer than just goulash and boiled dumplings. Below I have listed some of my favorite bars and restaurants in Prague, including some insider tips you shouldn’t miss:

Restaurants

• ZEM – my favorite dinner plane in Prague! It has an open kitchen, good atmosphere and excellent food while the prices are not expensive! The kitchen is a fusion of Japanese and Czech – it sounds strange but is incredible good and authentic. The Restaurant also has a great bar!
• Sia – Hip asian restaurant with a great atmosphere
• Grosetto Marina – Italian restaurant on a ship on the Vltava River
• James Dean – 1960’s style American diner and bar
• Cotto Crudo – Restaurant in the Four Seasons Hotel with a great view of the illuminated castle in the evening
• Gambero Rosso – authentic Italian with probably the best pizza in town
• U Pivrnce – Good Bohemian cuisine and local beer in a casual setting with good prices. The restaurant is particularly suitable as a lunch stop during your sightseeing tour

Bars

• Black Angels – great 1930’s style bar with special cocktails
• Terasa U Prince – the most beautiful roof top bar in Prague, especially worth a visit during the day
• Anonymous Bar – special atmosphere with great drinks
