Endless landscapes, breathtaking nature and one of a kind cultural experiences: Welcome to Texas – the second largest state in the USA (after Alaska). Texas is larger than any Western European country, which makes it difficult to complete a trip with all the highlights. The border with Mexico alone measures almost 2,020 kilometres (1,215 miles).

We opted for an epic road trip through West Texas, with routes off the beaten track. And one thing is for sure: that trip was absolutely breathtaking and unforgettable. Texas didn’t just surprise me, it literally overwhelmed me. I was impressed by the beautiful landscapes that characterise a large part of the Texan West, but also by the deeply rooted culture and the incredible friendliness of the locals.

In this post, I have put together a West Texas road trip for you – the ideal 14-day route with all the highlights. As always, you’ll also find a map on which I’ve marked all the spots for you.

The best time to visit West Texas:

Spring (March-May) and autumn (Oct-Nov) are best.

 → You can expect the perfect weather for hiking & photography.

You should avoid summer: It’s very hot, especially in Big Bend National Park and Marfa.

A West Texas road trip is also possible in winter, but the nights are freezing cold and many facilities are closed.

How many days should you plan for West Texas?

Ideally 12-14 days. → During this period, you can explore all the highlights in a relaxed manner and enjoy enough time to slow down.

You should plan at least 7-8 days if your focus is on Big Bend National Park and the West Texas culture.

Where should you start your Texas road trip?

San Antonio is a logical start and end point for the route of your West Texas road trip.

 → You can expect good flight connections and an ideal introduction to the road trip feeling.

 → San Antonio also has a lot to offer culturally and is therefore a worthwhile conclusion.

Which car is the best for your Texas road trip?

It is recommended to hire an SUV or an off-road vehicle.

 → Some roads are unpaved, e.g. in Big Bend National Park.

Petrol stations are often far apart → You should therefore always keep an eye on your fuel gauge and fill up early!

Important: Take care of offline maps & navigation in advance, e.g. via Maps.me or Google Offline. Especially in Big Bend National Park, you will often end up in areas without reception.

West Texas Road Trip – the ideal 14-day route with all the highlights

Day 1 Texas Road Trip – San Antonio

San Antonio is a city that can look back on a formative history – from a traditional colonial heritage to Mexican and German influences. San Antonio also has a beautiful green city centre that you should definitely explore. You shouldn’t miss out on the varied culinary highlights either.

After your arrival, the first thing you need to do is pick up your hire car directly at the airport. You should preferably book your hotel close to the airport so that you can arrive in peace and relax before you start your road trip the next morning.

Optional: If you land in the morning and are fit again, take a short walk on the unique Riverwalk to get you started. The San Antonio River meanders one level lower than the traffic zone under numerous bridges and forms two parallel pavements lined with greenery and pretty restaurants.

Day 2-3  – Guadalupe Mountains National Park

The first longer stretch of your West Texas Road Trip takes you from San Antonio towards the north-west, with a journey time of around 7 hours. You can observe the noticeable change in the landscape as the green plains give way to desert and stone.

Shortly before arriving at the national park, I recommend a short stop at El Capitan View Point for a wonderful view of the striking rock.

Ideas for hikes in Guadalupe Mountains National Park:

Guadalupe Peak – highest point in Texas, top views, but challenging. The hike up Guadalupe Peak is strenuous, but you will be rewarded with gigantic views. The route covers around 6.5 kilometres, for which you should plan around 7-8 hours due to the ascent.

Devil’s Hall – moderate to challenging hike with great rock formations. This trail takes you to a striking canyon-like rock formation known as Devil’s Hall. The route is around 3 kilometres long and took us 2 hours to complete, including short photo stops. The path is initially well developed, but the second half leads through an old river bed with large round stones. You therefore have to climb a little in some places.

Bush Mountain – less well known, but you will be rewarded with a view of Guadalupe Peak. The trail is around 4.5 kilometres long and is classed as challenging, but the scenery is simply indescribable.

Important: Due to the heat, you should bring plenty of water, sun protection, sunglasses and hats.

In the evening, be sure to enjoy the sunset over the mountains – it’s simply stunning! The El Capitan View Point is a great place for this!

Afterwards, it’s about a 2-hour drive to Fort Davis.

Tip: Of course, you can also extend the day and arrive and stay overnight near the Guadalupe Mountains National Park the day before. This will give you more time than travelling directly from San Antonio.

Day 3-4 Texas Road Trip – Fort Davis

Built in 1845, the historic Fort Davis National Historic Site is surrounded by beautiful rock and canyon scenery and was once one of the most important military posts in the south-west of the United States. It is one of the best-preserved reminders of this period. Its main task was to protect stagecoaches, traders and travellers from attacks.

Entrance Fee: 10$ per person

Tip: A trail leads to the cliffs above the fort, from where you have a breathtaking view.

Stargazing at the McDonald Observatory: → The McDonald Observatory is located in the secluded Davis Mountains. It promises a great view of the stars, as the night sky is darker here than at any other place on the US mainland. Tip: We recommend booking the telescope night show!

Accommodation Tip: Fort Davis doesn’t have a lot of hotels and accommodations so make sure to book your stay ahead of time!

Day 4 Texas Road Trip – Marfa

An absolute must on the route of your West Texas road trip is Marfa – an artists’ colony with a surreal vibe. In 1971, New York artist Donald Judd was looking for a suitable place to permanently exhibit his increasingly large-scale sculptures. He found one on the site of a former military base in the small Texan town of Marfa and founded the Chinati Foundation in 1987 – today one of the most renowned exhibition spaces for contemporary installations in the USA.

In Marfa, galleries and artist studios alternate with exhibition and performance spaces, retro buildings, upscale restaurants and food trucks – a truly impressive flair.

Art highlights in Marfa:

Prada Marfa – iconic & ironic. The installation created almost 37 miles west of the town, in the middle of the Texan desert, looks exactly like the façade of a Prada boutique. Behind the glass panes are real Prada shoes and handbags for you to admire. However, the art object actually criticises our consumer society and gentrification.

The Chinati Foundation – modern installations. As already mentioned, the Chinati Foundation is home to an enormous collection of contemporary installations by artists from all over the world. You should plan enough time for a visit. A reservation is also necessary.

Marfa Lights Viewpoint – mysterious lights. The so-called Marfa lights can be observed at night, especially shortly after dark. They shine very brightly in different colours. The best place to go is the Marfa Lights Viewpoint – a large rest area with tables, seating and toilets. 

A few more tips from me:

• You can take cool photos at empty petrol stations and neon signs.
• There are always ghost towns to discover along the way, which also make great photo opportunities.

Day 4-5 Texas Road Trip – Marathon

Another highlight in West Texas is Marathon – a charming desert town with a Wild West atmosphere. It is considered the gateway to Big Bend National Park and has a lot to offer. Here you will find idyllic places and opportunities to learn about the local history. 

Important: Marathon is the last stop with infrastructure before Big Bend National Park on your West Texas road trip. You should therefore stock up on everything you need for your trip here at the latest.

Two insider tips in Marathon:

Gage Gardens – This 10-hectare oasis with fountains and flowers looks like something straight out of a European villa. Amidst the tranquil and green gardens you will find a pond, an orchard and a vineyard.

Klepper Gallery – Here you can admire the impressive art and photography of nature photographer and author E. Dan Klepper. His work has been exhibited in the USA and Europe and published in numerous books and magazines.

Day 5-8 – Big Bend National Park

Big Bend National Park – one of the most beautiful and wildest park areas in America – is located in the south of West Texas, on the border with Mexico. The Rio Grande forms the natural border between the two countries, enchantingly tranquil, almost surreal in appearance. Here you can immerse yourself in a true paradise for hikers. Deserted, colourful canyons, spectacular rock formations and a rich variety of wildlife make for breathtaking hiking experiences like no other. And on a canoe tour on the Rio Grande, with its reed-covered banks, you’ll feel like you’re in an adventure film.

If you have enough time, I recommend the longer journey via the Scenic Border Route along the Rio Grande – the natural border between Texas and Mexico. On this stage of your West Texas road trip, you will be able to enjoy great views. There is also hardly any traffic, which makes the journey very relaxing.

My Big Bend National Park tips:

Santa Elena Canyon – iconic and easy to hike. You can reach the majestic canyon via a short trail. You have to cross the Terlingua Creed, which can be difficult after heavy rainfall.

Lost Mine Trail – great views of the Chisos Mountains. The trail stretches over 7.5 kilometres, with a moderate ascent, to one of the two highest peaks in Big Bend National Park. The route is peppered with breathtaking views and you should allow around 3 – 4 hours.

Important: There are hardly any opportunities to hike in the shade on many of the trails. → Be sure to bring a sun hat, sun cream and plenty of water! You can fill up your drinking water for free at the visitor centre.

Rio Grande Canoe Tour – my favorite activity during our West Texas Road Trip! A guided Canoe Tour along the border between Mexico & the US – the Rio Grande River – is a must do when you’re visiting the Big Bend National Park.

Rio Grande Hot Springs – partly accessible by canoe. (it was where we made a lunch stop during our canoe tour!) Here, at the mouth of Tornillo Creek in the Rio Grande, there are hot springs where you can bathe.

Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive – a beautiful panoramic road. Near Terlingua, the winding drive winds for 30 miles along some of the most beautiful landscapes and formations in Big Bend National Park. A the Sotol Vista Overlook you get a breathtaking view over the huge park and it is one of the best spots to watch the sunset!

Day 8-9 Texas Road Trip  – Terlingua

Terlingua is an abandoned mining town in the south-western tip of Texas. The name Terlingua is derived from Spanish and means ‘three languages’ – Indian language, Spanish and English.

Today, Terlingua is a ghost town with a real western flavour that should definitely not be missed on your West Texas road trip. It feels like another universe. It’s best not to make any plans, just immerse yourself in the enchanting flair and let yourself drift.

My Highlights in Terlingua:

Terlingua Cemetery – morbid photo backdrop. Terlingua Cemetery is one of the most photographed cemeteries in Texas. It may appear deserted due to its ungreened appearance, but it has a magical effect and is still in use today.

Starlight Theatre Restaurant – Live music, margaritas and real cowboys. The restaurant is located in a former theatre (formerly without a roof) where famous singers once performed. Today it offers its guests a roof, but the rustic interior walls and the stage for live musicians have been preserved. An absolute must! The restaurant opens at 5 p.m. and you will have to wait a few minutes at this time, but it’s worth it!

Day 9-11 – Fredericksburg (Hill Country)

Today you leave the desert on your West Texas Road Trip in the direction of lush Texas wine country, the Hill Country. You will enjoy the approximately 5.5-hour drive, as the variety in the landscape is impressive.

In Fredericksburg – named after Prince Frederick of Prussia – German settler history is visible and still alive today. Some of the houses are built in the German half-timbered style, and you will also find German street names, restaurants and beer gardens. There is even a German bakery, the Old German Bakery.

Fredericksburg is also famous for its vineyards in the surrounding area.

Tip for your accommodation: Trueheart Hotel – pastel-colored tiny houses. The hotel is a beautiful property in a perfect location, close to Main Street. → Linked here!

To Do’s in Fredericksburg, Texas:

• Stroll along Main Street – this is how you should start your stay in Fredericksburg. Stroll along Main Street with its inviting boutiques, beer gardens and wine bars.
• Enchanted Rock – Hike to the granite rock. This magical pink rock is located just 20 minutes from Fredericksburg. Native American tribes believe that it possesses spiritual powers. A short but relatively steep path leads up to the rock and you will be rewarded with fabulous views. The view from the top of Enchanted Rock over the Hill Country is simply beautiful. Early morning or sunset is best! Tip: To protect nature, access to the state park is limited daily. You should therefore book your day pass of $8 per person online to guarantee entry. → Book your reservation here!

• Wine tour – If you like wine, I recommend booking a tour of the most beautiful vineyards around Fredericksburg with Texas Wine Tours → Linked here! You don’t have to worry about anything because Texas Wine Tours organises everything for you. This means that no one in your group has to miss out on a wine tasting as a driver. We loved the ambience of the beautiful vineyards and the delicious wines we tasted. The most photogenic & my favorite winery was Signor Vineyards – make sure to include it to you tour! Our tour also included a visit to the German Style Altstadt brewery.
• Luckenbach – legendary mini-village for country fans with live music under old oak trees. Just 10 miles from Fredericksburg is the biker favourite town of Luckenbach – a mecca for country music lovers. The place looks like a western film set, you should definitely check it out.

Day 11-12 Texas Road Trip – Bandera

Off to Bandera, Cowboy Capital of the World. You’ll see for yourself that I’m not promising you too much: Bandera’s flair is authentic and has nothing to do with kitsch. That’s why you should definitely include the city in your West Texas road trip. To enjoy live music, it is advisable to plan your visit for the weekend.

Highlights in Bandera: 

Two of Bandera’s legendary and world-famous bars are located close to each other:

• 11th Street Cowboy Bar – For many the best bar in town, with cold beer and great music. The bar also has a large outdoor area for barbecues and dancing.  You can also let off steam playing pool here.
• Arkey Blue’s Silver Dollar – We liked the cowboy flair and the rustic ambience. Please note: Only cash payment possible, but you will find an ATM at the bar.

Restaurant tips: O.S.T. or TJ’s – Delicious, typical country cuisine in a cosy atmosphere.

Horse riding tour at a Ranch – early in the morning, with a cowboy breakfast. Horse riding was high up on my Texas bucket list. It was a great feeling to be carried through the Texan countryside on horseback. I highly recommend this experience.

Day 12-14 Texas Road Trip – San Antonio

Your West Texas road trip takes you back to San Antonio. Let yourself be enchanted by the city for another two days. Visit historic sites, take a boat trip and relax in cosy restaurants – the perfect end to an unforgettable trip.

Must-sees in San Antonio:

Riverwalk – boat tour & dinner by the water. As you can now spend a little more time on the San Antonio River than on your arrival day, I recommend taking a boat tour, leisurely along the green banks. Afterwards, stop off at one of the many restaurants lined up along the riverbank and round off the day with a delicious dinner.

The Alamo – Texan history up close. The Alamo, a mission station converted into a fort, symbolises Texas’ fight for independence against Mexico. It was here that a small group of defenders took up a legendary last stand in 1836 and defended Texas to the last man.

Missions – UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historic Spanish colonial sites were built in the 18th century to spread Christianity and Spanish culture among the Native American population. We visited the San Juan Mission which is one of the best preserved ones.

The island of St. Martin presents the typical Caribbean flair with its beautiful beaches and landscapes. For several centuries, it has combined it with a European cultural influence. The people who live here embody the colourful mix with their boundless friendliness and warmth. For this reason St. Martin is also known as ‘the friendly island’

In this post, I would like to introduce you to this unique island in the Caribbean and inspire you to spend your next holiday on St. Martin. As always, you’ll find a map at the end of this post in which I’ve marked all the best places to visit & most amazing photo spots for you.

Saint Martin & Sint Maarten – How two nations share a small Caribbean island…

The small Caribbean island of St. Martin lies around 250 kilometres east of the Greater Antilles island of Puerto Rico. It has been politically divided between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and France since 1648. With an area of just under 88 square kilometres, St. Martin is the smallest inhabited island in the world that belongs to two different countries. Its southern part (Sint Maarten) is Dutch, with the capital Philipsburg – where many cruise ships dock. In the north is the part that belongs to the French overseas territory of Saint Martin. The capital here is Marigot. Both sides not only have their own capital, but also their own government, police force and currency. However, all locals and tourists are allowed to cross the border without showing their passports.

Saint Martin or Sint Maarten – which side of the island is the better one?

Both sides of the island offer different advantages:

On the Dutch side St. Maarten is the well-known Princess Juliana International Airport. Here, aeroplanes take off and land almost within touching distance over the popular Maho Beach, as if you could still jump in. If you’re looking for a lively nightlife during your holiday or want to indulge in some shopping, St. Maarten is the place for you. What’s more, the locals here speak very good English.

The French side Saint Martin awaits you with its many great restaurants, especially in Grand Case, the ‘gastronomic capital of St. Martin’. Although it is generally quieter here, the secluded beaches and lush nature also speak for themselves.

During your holiday on St. Martin, however, it hardly makes a difference which side you choose, as you can reach all the best sights and photo spots quickly with a rental car and there are no border controls. You can move around freely.

How do you get to the island of St. Martin?

The quickest way to reach St. Martin is by plane. The most common flight connection is via Miami, but there are also direct flights with KLM from Amsterdam or Air France from Paris. Another option for your arrival in St. Martin would be to board one of the cruise ships that anchor in Philipsburg. However, these usually only stop on the island for one day.

When is the best time to visit St. Martin?

The climate on St. Martin is maritime and tropical. It is pleasantly warm all year round with daytime temperatures averaging 25 degrees Celsius. The best time to visit is between November and August, as there is less chance of rain during this time. In the rainy season, between September and October, there is a risk of tropical storms and hurricanes.

How many days for St. Martin in the Caribbean ?

A healthy alternation between adventure and relaxation makes your holiday perfect, and St. Martin is an ideal place for this – you should definitely plan 3 to 5 days. Fantastic beaches for swimming and walking, rainforest areas with great hiking trails and a wide range of sporting activities guarantee a varied holiday. You can also combine St. Martin with other Caribbean islands. More on this later.

My favourite beaches on the Caribbean island of St. Martin:

Friars Bay Beach

This great, soft sandy beach is located in a bay, with plenty of space to relax without any crowds. It is usually not very busy. There are also no strong waves here, which makes Friars Bay Beach perfect for swimming.

Happy Bay Beach

If you follow a narrow path from Friars Bay Beach, you will find Happy Bay: a small, secluded and empty beach. It’s like a small version of Friars Bay Beach but even quieter. This is why some bathers like to use it for nude sun bathing.

Maho Beach

Of course, the most famous photo spot on the island of St. Martin should not be missed: Maho Beach is world-famous thanks to the aeroplanes that land and take off here just overhead. Especially in the afternoon, when most of the big planes land, you can expect an unforgettable spectacle. As you can imagine, this is also when the beach is at its most crowded – it’s hard to find a place to lie down and relax here, but you don’t come to this beach to do that. My tip: The Sunset Beach Bar offers a great view of the landing planes and the beach while you enjoy a cocktail. It even has an arrival & departure monitor at the bar to never miss a flight!

Cupecoy Beach

It’s my favourite beach and the perfect place on the Caribbean island of St. Martin to watch the sunset. The beach is less suitable for swimming due to the often strong waves and its rocks, but offers a great photo opportunity and is very quiet – you are usually alone here. A stone staircase leads from the cliffs to the beach (the exact location can be found on my St. Martin map, including the nearest car park). Once at the bottom, you can also find hidden caves at low tide. All you have to do is walk a few steps along the rock on the left-hand side. But be careful: please never do this when there are strong waves or at high tide – the caves are then almost completely under water. It is best to check the tides online before you go.

The most beautiful attractions & things to do in Sint Maarten – the Dutch side

Philipsburg – capital of the Dutch side

Here you can enjoy the colourful Caribbean flair of the island of Sint Maarten while strolling along the beach promenade with its numerous bars and beach clubs and enjoying a fantastic view of the bay. You will also find plenty of souvenir shops. Due to the cruise ships that dock here, there are many day visitors in Philipsburg. The beach is therefore usually very busy.

Fort Amsterdam

On both sides of the island of St. Martin, you can visit the ruins of their respective historic fortifications free of charge. Fort Amsterdam belongs to the Dutch side and was built in the 17th century. You can even admire some cannons inside the fortress wall. From the top, you have a marvelous view of Philipsburg. Hundreds of pelicans live around the fortress, and if you’re lucky you might see nests with chicks.

Snorkeling in the underwater sculpture garden

An absolute must do during your holiday on the Dutch side of St. Maarten is a boat trip to the underwater sculpture garden Under SXM in Little Bay. It consists of 300 statues of famous personalities or important historical moments on the island. The garden has created an artificial reef and is home to many tropical fish. You will also often come across turtles, rays or an octopus that lives here. You should definitely choose a day with clear weather and sunshine for this activity. We were here after a heavy downpour and in cloudy weather, so the water was still very churned up with sediment. This is why we had to dive to see anything at all. Normally, the water is crystal clear and you can spot all sculptures while snorkelling.

Rainforest Adventure on Sentry Hill

A chairlift takes you up to the highest peak on the Dutch side, at a height of 341 metres – Sentry Hill. The ride gives you a fantastic view over the island of St. Martin. At the top there is a small zipline course with four different routes, which also offer you a great panoramic view – we had a lot of fun! The viewing platform at the summit is also absolutely spectacular, from where you can enjoy a 360-degree view. Brave souls can take the 853 m zipline back down to the valley from up here – the Flying Dutchman is the steepest zipline in the world with a gradient of 42 percent. But of course, you can also take the chairlift back down to the bottom instead. There are various combined tickets with all options.

Restaurant tip at Sentry Hill

There is a great historic restaurant, called Emilio’s, at the valley station. It is dedicated to the founder of the nature park. Here you can expect fantastic cuisine and good wines in a historic setting. Although the prices are on the high side, it’s worth stopping off here, perhaps for a special occasion.

The most beautiful attractions & things to do in Saint Martin – the French side

Marigot – capital of the French side of St. Martin

Similar to Philipsburg, small shops await you here, but there is no beach promenade in Marigot. Instead, you will find a pretty harbour with a market and small local restaurants or snack bars (known as Lolo’s). Marigot is also an ideal starting point for tours to secluded beaches and is known for its iconic architecture and monuments.

Fort Louis – one of the best sights of St. Martin

The historic fortress on the French side of the island of St. Martin is located on a hill right in the centre of Marigot and therefore offers a wonderful view over the town and harbour. It was built in the 18th century to defend the harbour and its warehouses. Well-preserved cannons can still be seen here too while large green iguanas like to sunbathe on the sides of the ruins.

Grand Case

Grand Case is not only my favourite village on Saint Martin, but on the whole island. As already mentioned, it is known as the ‘Gastronomical Capital of St. Martin’. Grand Case Beach is home to the best restaurants on the island – one after the other – and there’s something for everyone: local and affordable Lolo‘s (small BBQ stands) or fine dining restaurants. Among them, you’ll also find great individual shops where you can admire special pieces and local artwork.

The waterfront restaurants offer a fantastic view of the sunset, such as Korner SXM, which is a very cosy place to sip a wine & enjoy the views.

My absolute favourite restaurant however is Calmos Café – an open restaurant with a relaxed, cosy atmosphere and very friendly staff. Some of the tables are right by the water, and I’m still dreaming of the gratinated cheese gnocchi! You really must try this restaurant!

Must Visit Attraction in St. Martin: the small island of Pinel (Îlet de Pinel)

The visit of this tiny island off the north coast of St. Martin is a popular thing to do during a holiday on St. Martin. The island can be reached by kayak or water taxi (boat). It is a jewel with fine sand and illustrates the most beautiful postcards. You can take a relaxing stroll or go snorkelling in the shallow waters around the sheltered sand spit. A 10-minute walk takes you to the wild and rocky beach, which is exposed to the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. There are two restaurants on Îlet de Pinel where you can enjoy Caribbean specialities. Shuttle boats run back and forth every 30 minutes.

Hike to Pic Paradis – one of the best photo spots on St. Martin

At an altitude of 424 metres, Pic Paradis (Paradise Peak) is the highest point on St. Martin – in the middle of the densely overgrown green heart of the island. Nevertheless, the hike from the car park to the viewpoint at the summit only takes 10-15 minutes. You should still wear good shoes, as there is a lot of rubble on the path and it is very muddy after rain. Families of monkeys can often be seen on the ascent or the journey to the summit. The vervet monkeys are not originally native to St. Martin, but were brought to the island many years ago as pets. Apparently they liked it very much, because they have multiplied enormously. Today, hundreds of them live here and roam around freely.

Hiking enthusiasts can also start the ascent further down. You walk through the lush green of the rainforest and enjoy beautiful views – the hike to Pic Paradis from Loterie Farm takes around 2 hours.

Further excursion tips starting from St. Martin

Many travellers take a ferry from St. Martin to the mountainous neighbouring island of St. Barths or to the beach paradise of Anguilla. You can book both as a day trip or with an overnight stay in a hotel. Island hopping makes your Caribbean holiday even more exciting.

Maui is the second largest island of the Hawaiian archipelago and was the seat of the former kingdom for a long time before the regency was transferred to Honolulu in 1845. Characterised by its incomparable volcanic craters and fine sandy beaches, Maui is also called ‘the paradise island’ by its guests. Erosion has created a flat land bridge (isthmus) that connects the western mountains of Maui with the Haleakala mountain region. 

Exploring the picturesque landscapes and beaches of Maui, combined with a comfortable stay in stylish hotels or resorts, make a holiday on this dream island simply unforgettable.

When is the best time to visit Maui?

Maui is located in the tropical rainforest climate zone. The average daily temperature is 25 degrees Celsius. There are no noticeably different seasons – both the amount of rain and the temperatures are the same all year round. South Maui has the most reliable chance of sunshine.

How many days are ideal for a holiday on Maui?

You should plan at least three days for your Maui holiday to not miss any of the best attractions & activities. Of course, you can also plan a more relaxed Maui holiday and take more time. Maui, Hawaii – The best attractions & activities

After landing at the airport in Kahului, we travelled further south by car to Kihei. Most of the hotels, resorts and holiday homes are located here and in the west of Maui, as the chance of sunshine is the highest. The most beautiful beaches can be found in these rather dry areas as well. In the north and east, the clouds remain in the mountains and rain down, creating a beautiful rainforest with waterfalls and rivers. It is therefore a good idea to book a rental car to fully explore this magical island.

1. Iao Valley State Park – one of Maui’s best attractions

Let’s start in the west, at the Iao Valley State Park – a lush green rainforest valley through which the Iao Stream flows. In the valley’s warm and humid climate, flowers can be found everywhere. Ripe fruit hang from the trees and shrubs, some of which I had never seen before.

However, most people come here to see the Iao Needle: a volcanic rock that rises 370 metres (1,213 ft) out of the jungle and is the park’s landmark. The valley is of great spiritual significance to Hawaiians, who once carried their deceased kings here. For them, Iao was the highest god, the ‘highest light’.

We then drove along the coast of West Maui – always with the fantastic cliffs in view to the right and the dense rainforest to our left – it was breathtaking. At the westernmost point, we stopped at one of the many sandy beaches to watch a beautiful sunset. We could see as far as the island of Molokai.

In the entire western area from Kapalua to Lahaina, you can really stop anywhere to get to a beautiful sandy beach. Since Maui is considered the beach paradise of Hawaii, I want to share the best ones with you as well, as they are truly some of the best attractions of Maui:

2. The best beaches in Maui

Big Beach (between Kihei and Wailea)

It is part of the Makena State Park and is often referred to as the most beautiful beach in Maui. The beach owes its name to its length of around 1.5 kilometres. The water has a deep turquoise blue color and is perfect for swimming. When the sea is rough, the breaks belong to the surfers on their surfboards.

Wailea Beach (Wailea)

Wailea Beach is a gem, as it is located directly in front of the Grand Wailea and the Four Seasons hotel. Here you can chill out on the beach or go for a wonderful swim. Water sports enthusiasts won’t miss out either. When the sea is calm, there are good conditions for snorkeling at its southern end.

Keawakapu Beach (between Kihei and Wailea)

Located off the main road, this beautiful beach is a feast for the eyes at any time of day. It is also less crowded. That’s why you can enjoy the beach feeling undisturbed and at the end of the day with a breathtaking sunset.

Hamoa Beach (Hana)

An enchanting beach with white sand and clear water in an idyllic bay, reminiscent of beaches in the South Pacific. In calm weather, the bay is ideal for swimming; when the waves are high, it attracts surfers and bodyboarders.

Napili Bay (north-west coast)

In this picturesque bay, which is shaped like a crescent moon, you can enjoy swimming, snorkelling in the deep water and watching turtles.

3. The Road to Hana – you can’t miss this unforgettable attraction in Maui

One of Maui’s most spectacular attractions is the Road to Hana – the legendary panoramic road along the wild north-east coast, dotted with one viewpoint after another. Sometimes you drive past thundering waterfalls, sometimes through the middle of the jungle and then again past unique beaches – so many incredible spots and each one is an attraction itself.

However, the route is not without danger, as the road consists of 620 tight bends and 59 bridges, most of which can only be travelled on one lane. On one side of the highway there is often an endlessly high cliff face and on the other it descends several metres into the jungle or ocean. Sudden swerves are therefore difficult. You should make sure to plan the whole day for the 100 kilometres from Kahului to Hana, especially to take in the many stops that are worth seeing. An early start at sunrise is also worthwhile to beat the crowds.

The official Road to Hana only starts after a few miles from the village of Pa’ia and is marked with milestones from there. Caution: As the journey takes you along the rainier side of Maui, the weather can often be wet. So check the rain radar beforehand to catch a nice sunny day like we did.

Road to Hana Mile marker no. 9 – Ho’okipa Beach Park

Shortly after Pa’ia, you will reach Ho’okipa Beach Park – a beautiful sandy beach with huge lava stones in the water and a strong swell. A dreamlike setting that is not suitable for swimming, but for watching windsurfers and other water sports enthusiasts. Ho’okipa Beach is considered one of the top windsurfing areas in the world, with waves reaching up to 8 metres in winter. If you’re lucky, you might even spot one of the giant leatherback turtles that can often be found here. But please don’t touch them! You should always keep a distance of at least one metre from the animals to not disturb them. Touching turtles is prohibited by law in Hawaii.

Road to Hana Mile marker no. 9.5 – Waikamoi Ridge Trail

This short hiking trail leads directly through the rainforest and takes about 12-15 minutes. A wonderful opportunity to stretch your legs in the midst of unspoilt nature. It is also a good place to stop for a picnic. The Waikamoi Ridge Trail is located on the eastern edge of the Waikamoi Preserve, which protects some of the oldest trees on Maui.

Road to Hana Mile marker no. 15 – Lava rock bay (Nua’ailua Bay)

Near mile marker 15, a narrow turn-off on the left leads down to the sea and you come to a small and very photogenic lava rock bay. Here you can immerse yourself in the wilderness and beauty of nature and enjoy the views

Road to Hana Mile marker no. 19 – Upper Waikani Falls

Also known as Three Bears Falls, the Upper Waikani Falls are a true splendour. The triplets cascade down a steep rock face, merging into a gigantic fall when it rains heavily. At a bridge after mile marker 19, you can park your car at the side of the road (there are very few spaces) and then climb down the side of the bridge. The path is quite steep and you should be careful as it is often slippery.

Road to Hana Mile marker no. 29 – Local Market

There is a tiny market here that invites you to take a break. The small local stalls sell street food and handmade souvenirs. You should definitely try the tacos and the roasted coconut chips – absolutely delicious!

Road to Hana Mile marker no. 31 – Lava tube

Seeing the inside of a lava tube is a very special experience. At the Road to Hana you have the unique opportunity to do just that. Armed only with a torch, we descended into the gloomy depths through which red-hot lava once carved its way, leaving bizarre formations in its wake. You shouldn’t miss it. The entrance fee is $10.

Road to Hana Mile marker no. 32 – Wai’anapanapa State Park

A stop that is also absolutely worthwhile is at Wai’anapanapa State Park. With its beach of jet-black lava grains, it is one of Maui’s best attractions. There are various trails and opportunities for other outdoor activities here. Maybe you just want to sit on the beach and look out to sea – this place is simply enchanting.

A mini-trail leads to lava caves filled with fresh water. The path to the caves is marked with warning signs, as swimming and jumping into the crystal-clear water in the cave can be dangerous. We followed the trail despite the warnings and found teenagers swimming there – you just have to be a little careful.

Hana – the end of the Road to Hana

Finally you reach the sleepy village of Hana. Although Hana has a legendary reputation due to its location at the end of Hawaii’s most famous road, its 1200 inhabitants don’t try to take advantage of the stream of tourists that arrive here every day. Some guests may even be a little disappointed when they arrive. The village atmosphere is perhaps unexpected, but infinitely beautiful. That’s why Hana is also home to many expats who love this quiet and individual lifestyle in the midst of beautiful nature.

You now have the option of spending the night in Hana. However, we continued to follow the coastal road, which became more and more of an off-road track the further south we travelled. As it got darker and darker and the road is not really well lit, it was very adventurous. Fortunately, the route was no problem with a jeep. We reached our flat in Kihei shortly before midnight.

4. Kaihalulu Bay Red Sand Beach

This hidden little bay with its red sand lies just a few minutes behind Hana and is definitely on my list of Maui’s best attractions. It lives up to its name, as it means: roaring or rushing sea. However, the surrounding lava rocks protect the small beach from strong waves. We experienced a wonderful sunset here after our journey along the Road to Hana. We had to climb around a cliff to get there, as there is no direct access. But it was worth the effort: we had Kaihalulu Bay all to ourselves.

5. Haleakala National Park

Haleakala – an extinct volcano – rises over 3,055 metres (10,022 ft) above sea level and gives Maui its unique image. It seems as if it wants to protect the island for all time.

Haleakala National Park is an absolute highlight and is definitely one of Maui’s best attractions. It offers two completely different regions: Craters and lava formations on one side and bamboo forest and waterfalls on the other. Numerous hiking trails invite you to explore the fantastic landscape and nature. The most popular activity is a hike on the Sliding Sands Trail, which allows you to hike above the clouds.

We travelled by car on the Haleakala Crater Road, which zigzags up to the volcano so that you are thrown back and forth in the car. Unfortunately, the weather got progressively worse the higher we got. At the summit, which was surrounded by clouds, it was pouring with rain. After a short stop, we returned to the main road, but we discovered something else beautiful on the volcano: the unique ‘silver swords’, which can only be found in the alpine ecosystems of Hawaii.

6. Visit Molokini and Turtle Town – two of the best activities in Maui

These two spots are often combined, as they are located not far from each other off the south-west coast of the island and can be reached by boat. Definitely a must on my list of Maui’s best sights.

Molokini is a sunken volcanic crater that still partially protrudes from the sea as a small crescent-shaped island. It encloses a huge snorkelling paradise that is home to more than 240 different marine animals, such as reef sharks, octopuses and yellow trumpet fish. At the back of the island, manta rays, dolphins and moray eels like to frolic in the sea. Molokini is therefore one of Maui’s most popular diving areas. The island itself is home to numerous seabirds that raise their young here.

Another well-known and very popular snorkelling spot on Maui is Turtle Town, where – as the name suggests – you can swim with turtles. Don’t miss out on this amazing activity in Maui, because the cute little guys are simply adorable – for me, that’s a reason enough to come back here again.

7. Maui Wines – a Maui insider tip

After our visit to the Haleakala crater, we discovered a winery by chance on our onward journey. Maui Wines not only grows grapes to make wine, but also produces the unique pineapple wine. The fruit for this also comes from plantations on Maui. After a guided tour and tasting of the different types of wine, we drove back with unexpected impressions (and a 12-bottle crate in the boot). The small winery is absolutely worth a detour and is located on a restored historic site. What a unique activity in Maui!

8. Whale watching – one of the best activities in Maui

Every winter, from December to April, around 12.000 humpback whales come from Alaska to the warm waters of Maui to mate and give birth to their calves. The west coast of Maui is their most important breeding and nursery area. Humpback whales like to stay close to the coast, which favours the observation of these cute animals that love to jump up into the air. Please make sure you choose an animal-friendly tour that is organised by experts and marine scientists. My recommendation:

Maui is adventure, but also pure relaxation and can hardly be described in words. The wild, unspoilt nature in particular, with its diverse faces, invites you to immerse yourself in it. Its many beautiful beaches are an absolute dream and perfect to stroll along with breathtaking sunsets. Maui gives you an unforgettable break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Our first visit left a deep impression on us and was unfortunately far too short.

Hawaii will always make my heart beat faster and Maui has now found its place in it. You don’t really need to recommend Maui because you’ll see that the island speaks for itself once you get here.

Oahu – the third-largest and second-oldest island in Hawaii – impresses with its rich diversity, vibrant life, lush green landscapes and beautiful beaches. As the main island, with the capital Honolulu, it is the heart of Hawaii. We visit Oahu during all of our Hawaii trips and know the island very well, although it never ceases to surprise and fascinate us.

In this post, I share with you my insider tips and the most beautiful sights on Oahu and tell you what is really worth seeing.

In this post, you’ll find my ultimate raod trip itinerary for five days on Oahu – with the best beaches, sights, hikes, tours and numerous other Must Visit spots. When is the best time to visit Oahu, Hawaii?

Oahu – just like all Hawaiian Islands – enjoys a warm, tropical climate with daytime temperatures of at least 22 degrees Celsius. It rains more frequently in the winter months, but usually only briefly. Between April and November is the ideal time for swimming, snorkeling or chilling on the beach.

How many days to plan to see the best places on Oahu?

Ideally, you should plan 5 days so that you don’t miss any of the best sights on Oahu. Of course, you could also plan more days, but that way you still have enough time to combine your Hawaii vacation with the other islands. Oahu itinerary: Arrival in Honolulu

Landing in the bustling metropolis of Honolulu is the perfect starting point for your stay on Oahu. Here you are guaranteed to find the right hotel from which you can explore the city up close and enjoy a huge selection of restaurants and bars. Additonaly, Honolulu’s city flair is typically Polynesian: palm trees adorn the city center and you will meet locals in typical Hawaiian shirts.

With a rental car, you can reach all the best places to visit in Oahu quickly.

If it’s not too late after your arrival, you should definitely watch the sunset from Tantalus Lookout – one of the most beautiful places on Oahu in the evening. You can easily reach it by car and will be rewarded with a fantastic view over the city. Tantalus Lookout is a popular picnic spot amongst the locals. Bring a small blanket or towel to sit on the grass and maybe some snacks too. Afterwards, numerous restaurants and bars await you in Waikiki, where you can relax at the end of the day.

Our insider tip: A visit to the Cheesecake Factory in Honolulu has become a tradition during our trips to Oahu – super tasty and everyone is guaranteed to find something on the extensive menu of this cult restaurant!

Oahu itinerary: Day 1

After your first breakfast on Oahu, you will take a road trip towards the east coast with its great beaches and viewpoints. At Lana’i Lookout , you can watch the surf crash over the washed-out rocks, creating wave-like formations.

The Halona Blowhole Lookout is located next to a small beach in Halona Cove and offers a very special spectacle: the incoming surf has washed a hole in the rocks and with every wave, water flows under the rock, which is then catapulted out of the blowhole as a fountain due to the resulting pressure.

One of my favorite viewpoints on Oahu is the Makapuu Lookout – without having to hike. However, if you feel like walking a little, there is a trail to the Makapuu Lighthouse around the rock by the sea. The trail starts before the entrance to the Makapuu Lookout parking lot.

Halona Cove

Until the afternoon, you can relax wonderfully on Waimanalo Beach – my favorite beach on Oahu and for me one of the most beautiful ones in the world. White sand and deep turquoise water await you here, just as you would imagine in paradise. As the beach is also very popular with the locals, here’s my tip: during the week, it’s significantly less busy and you can enjoy the dreamlike flair undisturbed. There are two parking lots belonging to Waimanalo Beach. → You can find out more in my blog post about the most beautiful beaches on Oahu.

In the late afternoon, you head off to the Diamond Head Hike – a crater that was formed around 300,000 years ago during a volcanic eruption and is one of the ultimate sights on Oahu. A road leads through a tunnel to the middle of the crater, where the parking lot is located and you begin the hike up to the crater rim. Once there, you will enjoy a gigantic view of Honolulu and the surrounding mountains. Important: Book your access online in advance, preferably a few days in advance. The cost is 10 dollars for parking and 5 dollars admission per person. In the late afternoon, the city is bathed in particularly beautiful light, which makes the view even more spectacular. Unfortunately, you have to leave the parking lot by 6 p.m. as it is then closed off – last entry is 4 p.m. It takes around 60-90 minutes to reach the summit. My insider tip: It’s worth staying at the summit until a guide announces that it will be closing soon. That way you’ll be the last one up. You can make the way back in 20-30 minutes.

For dinner, I recommend two good restaurant tips in Honolulu, which we of course tried out ourselves: An interactive Korean BBQ awaits you at Gyu Kaku. And you can get the best Pho on Oahu at the Vietnamese restaurant Pate – it looks rather unspectacular from the outside , but is extremely tasty and reasonably priced.

Oahu itinerary: Day 2

The second day of my Oahu itinerary starts in Honolulu with a sailing tour to snorkel with turtles. This experience is unique and will definitely enchant you. You will also be able to view the beautiful coastline from the boat. Make sure to book the tour online in advance.

At lunchtime, treat yourself with a walk along the beach promenade in Waikiki and stop for lunch. The Steak Shack on the beach only serves one, but incredibly tasty dish: freshly grilled steak or chicken with rice and salad – and at a reasonable price for Hawaii.

Visit one of the most important sights on Oahu in the afternoon – Pearl Harbor. The historical monument and open-air museum commemorates the Japanese attack on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor in December 1941. It was through this attack that the USA became involved in the World War II. The Pacific War continued until September 1945. The coastal path is lined with signs explaining the course of the attack, after which you can explore the memorials and museums – a truly emotional and moving visit.

It’s time for another beautiful sunset. This time you drive along the west coast to Keawaula Beach, also known as Yokohama Beach, the last beach on the west coast heading north. The drive may take a little longer, but it’s worth every minute, especially at this time of day. Prepare yourself for an unforgettable experience until you finally hit the beach at sunset. Oahu itinerary: Day 3

The day starts very early in the morning with a sunrise hike – the Lanikai Pillbox Hike. But it’s absolutely worth it, as you’ll enjoy a wonderful view of the sunrise, Lanikai Beach, the surrounding mountains and two small islands in the sea. On the highest point is the ruin of a former World War II observation post – a popular photo spot as it appears as if you are sitting on the cliff, even though the hill is close below. The length of the hike from the starting point is about 1.4 km / 8.7 miles (there and back) and takes about 30-40 minutes each way. However, the nearest parking lot is an additional 15 minutes from the starting point of the hike. I have marked the exact location of the parking lot on my Oahu map. The path is very steep in some places and slippery after rain, so sturdy hiking boots are important.

Then it’s time for another road trip, this time from the east coast to the north coast, to the famous North Shore – one of the most beautiful places on Oahu and particularly popular with surfers. You can make a stop at the Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden to enjoy the fantastic view with panoramic views of the “Jurassic Park Mountains”. Another stop worth making is the Byodo-In Temple, a Japanese Buddhist temple surrounded by a beautiful backdrop, nestled in an idyllic garden. It is a true-to-scale replica of the Byodo-In Temple in Japan, which is over 950 years old. For an entrance fee of 5 dollars, you can relax here and immerse yourself in a beautiful world.

Ka’a’awa Beach Park is also a spot not to be missed. With its fantastic backdrop for photos, it is probably the most photogenic beach on Oahu and also offers the opportunity to relax. → Check out my guide to the most beautiful beaches on Oahu to find out more.

Spend the late afternoon on the North Shore, followed by the sunset. At Sunset Point Beach, you can watch the surfers riding the waves. Unfortunately, the ocean is too rough to go swimming at this spot. Another beach you should definitely visit is Laniakea Beach. Here, turtles come out of the sea in the late afternoon to rest in the warm sand. Please note that you must keep your distance from them and remain calm. Disturbing or even touching the turtles is prohibited by law. You will often find contact persons from a voluntary organization nearby the animaly who will explain a lot about the turtles and make sure that they are not disturbed. Each turtle even has its own name.

My insider tip for today’s dinner on Oahu: In Haleiwa, a small town on the North Shore, there are many different food stalls and small, cozy restaurants offering pizza, pasta, burgers, fish and other delicious dishes – a wide selection where everyone is sure to find something for themselves. The best place to park is on Kamehameha Highway, on the corner of Amara Road.

Oahu itinerary: Day 4

Have you ever been on an early morning snorkeling tour? You should definitely try it out. I recommend Hanauma Bay (the curved bay) on Oahu – an extinct volcanic crater with a wonderful backdrop and one of the best snorkeling spots on the island. Important: The bay is closed every Monday and Tuesday. An online reservation for 25 dollars per person is also required. The spots are fully booked several days in advance, which is why you should book as early as possible. It is definitely worth booking one of the early time slots from 06:45 a.m. to enjoy the peace and quiet. The fish are also most active in the morning and the water is still very cleat. One tour I recommend for the afternoon is the hike to the Crouching Lion – a short but relatively steep trail that initially leads through the rainforest and later requires rocky climbing. Sturdy hiking boots are also a must for this so that you don’t slip. Your efforts will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of Kanana Bay and the rugged mountain landscape. The starting point is easy to miss – I’ve marked it on my Oahu map. You can directly park your car on the opposite side of the road.

If you want to end the day with another perfect sunset, there is another great option: on board a spacious catamaran. You simply have to experience the boat trip along the coast of Waikiki at sunset and let it work its magic on you. Alternatively, there is Ala Moana State Park, which I also consider to be one of the most beautiful places on Oahu. You can also watch a beautiful sunset from here. This place is also very popular with the locals at this time of day.

Oahu itinerary: Day 5

To start the last day of my travel tips for Oahu with a spectacular adventure, we head up to the North Shore once again. It is not only a popular spot for surfing, but also for swimming with sharks. Even large sharks, such as the Galapagos sharks, can be found here and the water is very clear. Dives and snorkeling tours with a shark cage are popular – a safe cage in which you can observe the sharks underwater from a safe distance. However, tours without a cage are also offered, as sharks are not at all bloodthirsty, as their bad reputation often suggests. No matter which tour you choose, it is an unforgettable experience to get so close to these elegant animals. Make sure to book this tour online in advance as its quite popular.

Until the afternoon, you could use the time to relax on the beach again, perhaps even at my favorite, Waimanalo Beach. But you can of course also visit one of the many beautiful beaches that you can find in → my guide to the most beautiful beaches on Oahu. Another insider tip from me: at Waimea Bay Beach, you can relax and end the day with a walk in the soft sand or a swim. You won’t find many tourists here either.

Afterwards, you set off to experience your last sunset up close at one of the most beautiful places on Oahu: on the crater of Koko Head, which is also an extinct volcano. The hike takes you up more than 1000 steps on an old railroad track. The difference in altitude is around 300 meters (984 ft) until you finally reach the highest point of the Koko Crater Head. Up here you will feel so infinitely free – and with a breathtaking sunset with panoramic views over the island. Early morning is also a good time for this tour. The ascent is more difficult at noon, as the hill no longer provides any shade and you would be walking in the blazing sun. The hike is also very popular with local athletes, but at the summit there is enough space to enjoy the view in all directions all to yourself. You should allow around two hours for the return journey, including breaks.

Feeling the sea, the sand, the wind and immersing yourself in another world. And trust me, during a Hawaii island hopping trip, you will realize that a vacation in Hawaii has so much more to offer:

With a distance of around 4000 km (12,000 miles) from the mainland, Hawaii is one of the most remote island groups in the world. Of the more than 130 islands, only six can be explored. Each of them is unique and shows its own distinctive and enchanting side, even though they are so close together. Island hopping is therefore a great idea during your trip to Hawaii – but which Hawaiian island is the best?

In this post, I’ll introduce you to the six main islands – with their respective advantages and possible disadvantages for your Hawaii vacation. You’ll find out which island suits you best.

Weather – When is the best time to travel to Hawaii for a vacation?

The best time to travel to Hawaii for your vacation depends on your interests and activities, although the climate zones of the islands also vary a little. In any case, it is warm all year round on all islands , between 22 and 30 degrees Celsius (72 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit).

From November to April it rains more frequently, sometimes very heavily, but usually only for a short time. These months are ideal for hiking and, of course, surfing. Summer, from May to October, is ideal for the beach, swimming and snorkeling.

Hawaii island hopping – which island is the best?

O’ahu – the bustling island

O’ahu is the main island. It is home to Honolulu – the capital of Hawaii, the only metropolis of the islands with millions of inhabitants and the economic center. Most people live here. In Honolulu, you’ll find skyscrapers, huge hotels, shopping malls and attractive boulevards, just like in you know it from the US. However, the city is surrounded by lush green mountain ranges.

Of course, O’ahu is not just Honolulu. The island has so much to offer. Kāne’ohe Bay, to name just one example, is a picturesque sheltered bay interspersed with reefs. The first Polynesians arrived here in their canoes around 1000 years ago. O’ahu is ideal for a road trip to see all the beauty of the island at your pace.

O’ahu – Advantage:

None of the other islands offer as much diversity as O’ahu: city life, fantastic hiking trails with breathtaking views and some of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii, such as Waimānalo Beach.

Downside:

Most international flights as well as flights from the US mainland land in Honolulu. As a result, this and places close to Honolulu are by far the busiest tourist destinations. During the last few years, an online reservation system has been introduced at some attractions to regulate the crowds of tourists. This even applies to some beaches and nature parks. Nevertheless, it is worth planning a few days of your Hawaiian vacation on O’ahu. By car, you can also discover quiet, remote places and hiking trails as well as beautiful beaches.

Who will love O’ahu?

Hawai‘i Island – The Big Island – the active island

The youngest of all the Hawaiian Islands, formed around 300,000 to 1,000,000 years ago from a total of 5 volcanoes, is also by far the largest – hence its official nickname: The Big Island. Nevertheless, only around 200,000 people live here, as the majority of the island is uninhabited.

Active volcanism shapes the island every single day and allows it to grow constantly. Lava deltas are constantly forming. Lava flows towards the coast and then from a height of 20 meters (66 feet) into the Pacific. The 1000 °C (1000 °F) hot lava meets 20 °C (68 °F) cold water. Huge fountains of water vapor are created at these spots. Finally, the lava plunges 6,000 meters (20,000 feet) into the sea until a new delta forms months later.

Big Island has another special feature to offer: Of the 23 existing climate zones in the world, 20 can be found on this island alone. You shouldn’t miss out on this and should therefore definitely include Big Island in your island hopping itinerary during your trip to the Hawaiian Islands.

The Big Island – advantage:

There’s never a dull moment on the Big Island, because there’s so much to discover. Where else can you snorkel and see dolphins early in the morning, stand in front of huge waterfalls in the rainforest at midday, hike on an active volcano in the afternoon and marvel at the clearest starry sky at night, high above the clouds, next to a NASA station, while there is a high probability of snow.

Another tip for the night: diving with manta rays. A group of diving companies has equipped an area at a depth of 10 meters (33 feet) with light sources. This attracts plankton, which in turn attracts the manta rays. It is a breathtaking spectacle and absolutely unforgettable. But please make sure to book your diving tour with a certified diving company. Unfortunately, the rise in tourism has led to more and more operators carrying out activities with manta rays without paying attention to the welfare of the animals. Big Island is pure adventure and should therefore not be missed on your Hawaiian island hopping itinerary.

Disadvantage:

You will find few classic “beach motifs ” with white sand and palm trees, but instead unique coastlines with black lava formations, cliffs, fantastic snorkeling spots and black or even green sand.

In addition, due to the size of the Big Island, it is sometimes necessary to travel longer distances by car to explore the island.

Kauai – the spectacular Hawaiian Island

Although Kauai is the oldest Hawaiian island, it is one of the smallest. There is no longer any volcanic activity here. For over 6 million years, wind and water have formed deep canyons and impressive, densely green coastlines, which are characteristic of the “Garden Island”, as it is lovingly called. The Na Pali coastline is considered one of the most beautiful in the world and was the backdrop for the movie “Jurassic World”.

Only 20 percent of Kauai is connected by roads, the rest is pure wilderness. You can well imagine how wonderfully untouched the landscape is. There are secluded beaches in front of spectacular mountain ranges, healthy rainforests with mighty waterfalls, such as the Wailua Falls – a gigantic double waterfall – or hiking trails with fantastic views, such as the Kalepa Ridge Trail.

 The best way to explore Kauai is by rental car. But to admire the remote natural beauty, you should treat yourself to a helicopter flight. It’s definitely worth it, as you will enjoy breathtaking views of the island which are only possible from the air. You can also take a boat tour to admire secluded beaches or stop for a snorkel and marvel at the magical turtles and wild dolphins. For me, Kauai is the best Hawaiianisland and represents the absolute Hawaiian feeling – so it should definitely enrich your Hawaiian island hopping.

Kauai – Advantage:

Kauai is less frequently visited. That’s why there are hardly any crowds of tourists here, instead you’re more likely to find miles of deserted beaches. In addition, the most spectacular hiking trails and views in the world await you here. You can find them all in my → Kauai Travel Guide.

Disadvantage:

Kauai is a paradise, so I can hardly think of any disadvantages. You could perhaps mention the size – as Kauai is very small, you can explore the island relatively quickly. Three days are already enough to see the most beautiful spots, which speaks in favor of putting Kauai on your itinerary for a Hawaiian island hopping trip. Apart from that, the choice of restaurants, hotels and shopping options is relatively limited.

Maui – the sunny island

Maui is particularly popular for a beach vacation. Compared to the other Hawaiian islands, Maui is surrounded by almost 200 km (124 miles) of coastline with many beautiful soft sandy beaches, which are ideal for sunbathing and swimming, but also for water sports. Here you can watch a wonderful sunset every evening.

As the second largest island in Hawaii , Maui naturally has so much more to offer. Mystical crater cones also characterize its distinctive image. Lava lovers will adore Wai’ānapanapa State Park with its black sand.

The biggest scenic highlight is the wild coastline along the 85 km (50 mile) long Road to Hana. During the spectacular drive to the small village of Hana, which is located in the east, you should definitely make several stops, otherwise you would miss so many wonderful sights. These include stunning views of the deep blue Pacific, gigantic waterfalls cascading into natural pools and the lush green rainforest with exotic plants such as the rainbow eucalyptus trees that grow here.

For me, Maui is also one of the most beautiful islands in Hawaii and a popular stop on a Hawaiian island hopping trip.

Maui – Advantage:

While other parts of Hawaii are characterized by a lot of rain, Maui offers largely guaranteed sunshine, especially on the most popular beaches.

Disadvantage:

If you really want to look for a disadvantage on Maui, the only thing I can really think of, similar to Kauai, is the relatively small number of restaurants.

Who will feel at home on Maui?

Unfortunately, we have not yet traveled to the following two islands ourselves – Moloka’i and Lanai – but I don’t want to skip them in this article.

Moloka’i – the traditional island

Moloka’i is the fifth largest island in Hawaii. On the North Shore Pali you will find the world’s highest sea cliffs, with a height of almost 1200 meters (3900 feet). The locals are largely descended from indigenous people, feel a strong connection with nature and preserve their Polynesian culture.

Moloka’i is the perfect destination for those seeking relaxation and tranquillity with Pāpōhaku Beach, one of the longest and least crowded white beaches in Hawaii. Snorkeling paradises await you at Kumimi Beach in the east and Kapukahehu Beach in the west. The second is also an ideal place to end the day with a beautiful sunset.

Hiking enthusiasts will also be delighted: the guided hike along the cliffs to kalaupapa National Historical Park is an impressive experience.

Due to its proximity, you can easily combine Moloka’i with a stay on Maui and add Moloka’i to your Hawaii vacation itinerary.

Lana’i – the smallest island in Hawaii

The tiny island of Lana’i is located in the center of the archipelago, only about 15 km (9 miles) from Maui. It is perfect for a day trip and therefore a must-see when island hopping in Hawaii. I recommend taking the ferry from Maui . The approximately one-hour trip is simply beautiful. In winter, humpback whales are often out and about. Spinner dolphins are also at home here, especially in the morning they like to hang out in this region of the Pacific.

There is only one small town and one road on Lana’i. On the one hand, you will find a luxury resort and golf courses here and on the other, peace and seclusion.

Hulopo’e Bay is home to one of Hawaii’s most beautiful sandy beaches – ideal for snorkeling and relaxing. You can always find a shady spot under the palm trees. Just a 10-minute walk away is Manele Bay with Manele Harbor. Both bays are part of a marine conservation area– home to numerous species of fish and spinner dolphins that you can watch jumping. The landmark of Lana’i rises majestically between the bays – the bizarre rock formation Puu Pehe, also lovingly called “Sweetheart Rock”.

How to get to Joshua Tree National Park

A visit in Joshua Tree can easily be connected with a visit in Palm Springs. After we spend the whole day exploring this special city we drove around 50 Mins to Yucca Valley. This small village is only a few minutes away from the visitor center and the West Entrance Station of the National Park. We stayed there for two nights in the coolest Airbnb ever!

When is the best time to visit Joshua Tree National Park?

The Joshua Tree National Park is a desert so keep in mind that the temperatures can get really high during the summer months. Autumn and spring are perfect for a visit while the winter months can get a bit chilly. When we’ve been there at the end of November we had nice sunny days with around 22°C but as soon as the sun was setting (which was already at 4pm) it got really chilly.

How much is the entrance fee for Joshua Tree National Park?

As already mentioned above you will enter the Park through the West Entrance Station if you stay in Yucca valley or come from Palm Springs. A pass for one car (no matter how many people are in it) costs 30$ and is valid for seven days. You can get the ticket at the visitor center or right at entrance gate.

Unique Rock Formations

Following the street to the East it will lead you to the Jumbo Rocks. These are the same boulder rocks you’ve already seen before – just way bigger! And a few meters behind it is the famous Skull Rock located. You won’t miss it since the unique shape of a giant skull is very remarkable and can already be seen from the street.

The Arch Rock – a highlight in Joshua Tree National Park

This spot is a bit tricky to find and you should only do this tiny little hike to the arch if you’re fine with climbing rocks and wear shoes with a good grip: Arch Rock is a natural rock bridge surround by some big and impressive boulder rocks. Park your car at White Tank Campground and start this little walk along and over the stone formations. This area is not only beautiful for the Arch Rock but you will find sooo many more impressive formations which are incredibly photogenic. I especially loved the light shortly before and during sunset. From a higher location, sitting on a rock, you’re even able to enjoy the sunset glow a little longer.

Continuing the street it will lead you to a junction. The way to the left will lead you out of the park but driving right will lead you to the Colorado desert part of the park. It’s impressive to see how the nature & landscape starts to change around you. Boulder rocks disappear and will be changed to a huge valley with some cacti here and there.
The Cholla Cactus Garden is definitely worth a stop. It’s a patch which is covered with jumping cholla cactus. These cacti are also called teddy bear cholla since itchy looks super fluffy from a distance. But let me tell you that you better should not cuddle them… I accidentally touched a cactus with the back of my hand and got hundreds of spikes stuck in my hand! The marks lasted for almost three weeks but luckily stopped hurting after a few hours already.

Now you can decide whether to continue this road until you leave the Joshua Tree National Park through a gate in the South and drive to Palm Springs or to take the same route back to reach Yucca Valley again. This is how we had the chance to see the beautiful National Park during sunset again.

558,000 acres of the Joshua Tree National Park are declared as wilderness and aren’t accessible by car. This is to protect the unique nature of the desert.

Stargazing in Joshua Tree National Park

The Joshua Tree National Park is one of the darkest environments in California due to lack of light pollution. Another plus point is the weather – almost all nights in Joshua Tree National Park are crystal clear, with no clouds in sight. Additionally there is no closing time of the National Park – you could stay all night if you’d wish to do so. All this makes the National Park to a perfect stargazing location!

We opted for a tour and were so happy we did as our guide brought two massive telescopes to watch the stars and even other galaxies. It was absolutely mind blowing to see extragalactic objects that aren’t part of our own galaxy – the Milky Way. As soon as the sun sets, the stars appear and you’ll be able to see more and more by the hour. Our guide showed us so many stars, constellations and other planets – he knew everything about the night sky! Additionally our tour included chairs, blankets which were just perfect  as it gets pretty chilly in the desert after sunset.

Important Tips when visiting Joshua Tree National Park

• Bring enough water, a few snacks and have your car filled up with gas! You will find no shops or restaurants in the National Park. Even most campgrounds don’t have water – the last stops to get some water are the visitor centers. Yucca Valley is the last village before the West entrance with gas stations, restaurants and shops.
• You won’t have any phone service or internet connection in the National Park. But the map you will get at the visitor center / the entrance station helps for orientation plus the streets can not be missed. If you would like to use Google maps to find specific spots (like Arch Rock) make sure to load them BEFORE entering the park.
• Due to daylight saving the sun sets quite early in California starting from November 1st. This means you will only have time until around 4.30 pm before it will be dark and cold all of a sudden. So plan enough time for your one day visit before the sunset.

During my last visit, however, I saw that Detroit has flourished in the last few years and has transformed into a diverse and hip hotspot. In this article, I will give you helpful travel tips and also reveal the most beautiful places and sights in Detroit!

When is the best time to visit Detroit?

The best time to visit Detroit is from late spring to early fall. During this time it is warm and there are fewer rainy days. July to September are the sunniest months with summer temperatures and hardly any rainfall.

How many days should you plan for Detroit?

To discover the most beautiful sights in Detroit and perhaps even experience a baseball game of the famous Detroit Tigers, I recommend three nights in Detroit.

Hotel tip in Detroit:

During your trip to Detroit, I would recommend booking a hotel in downtown Detroit. This way, you can even reach many of the most beautiful sights on foot. We therefore opted for the → DoubleTree Suites by Hilton in Detroit Downtown. It is located in the renovated building of the historic Fort Shelby Hotel, which originally opened in 1918 and flourished with the rise of the Motor City until it unfortunately had to close in 1974 and stood empty for a long time. The most beautiful sights in Detroit

Belle Isle

The most beautiful view over the Detroit River and downtown! Belle Isle is an island in the Detroit River, which can be easily reached by car or Uber/Lyft and is the locals’ favorite tip. The view over the Detroit skyline is simply beautiful! Especially at sunset, you’ll meet lots of locals here who bring blankets, meet up with friends, have picnics, barbecues and enjoy the park.

By the way, Belle Isle is located right on the US-Canadian border, which runs through the Detroit River. So you can see Canada just a few meters away from you

Belle Isle is also home to the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory. A botanical garden with a historic greenhouse built in the early 1900s and a water lily pond. The conservatory is very photogenic and especially worth a visit in spring and summer!

The Henry Ford – Museum & Greenfield village

The Henry Ford Museum

This is without a doubt an absolute must-see sight in Detroit. The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation began in the early 1900s as a personal collection of historical objects belonging to Henry Ford until the museum opened in 1929. Before our visit, I had the misconception that this museum was all about cars and the history of Henry Ford. However, what awaited us was incredibly exciting and surprising: the Henry Ford Museum is an impressive and interactive exhibition of inventions and machines that have shaped contemporary history and development from the beginning of industrialization to the present day.

One of my highlights was the American diner in the 60s style with an original McDonald’s neon sign where drinks and food such as sandwiches and delicious pies are served!

A visit to the Henry Ford Museum is a great experience for young and old alike and not to be missed in Detroit!

Das Greenfield Village

Especially on a sunny day, a visit to the Greenfield Village, right next to the Henry Ford Museum, is almost even better! Similar to the museum, here you also travel back in time to the late 19th and early 20th century – but you truly immerse in this world. The area is a huge open-air museum with an old railroad that runs through Greenfield Village, historic houses of famous American inventors that have been restored and rebuilt here and restaurants where you can try dishes from earlier times. Even the staff wear period clothing and ride through the village on old carriages. Another highlight is the ride in an original Model T from Ford. The first car that was mass-produced from 1902 and brought Henry Ford worldwide fame.

A visit at Greenfield Village truly feels like traveling back in time.

The third stage of the Henry Ford World of Experience is the Ford Rouge Factory Tour, which we unfortunately missed due to limited time. It is an insight into the ongoing and active production of modern Ford models that you won’t get anywhere else in the world. An insight behind the scenes, which is highly praised in the reviews of other travelers.

To experience the entire Henry Ford world with all three stages, you should plan at least one full day, as you need 2 – 3 hours to experience each experienc. I could have stayed even longer at Greenfield Village. Another alternative is to split the experience over two days.

All exhibitions are open daily from 9:30 am to 5 pm, but the last Factory Tour starts at 3 pm.

The Motown Museum

This is where famous singers such as Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and many more signed their first contracts and became international superstars.

The record label was founded in Detroit in 1959 and grew extremely quickly to become the most successful soul music label in the world until today.

Today, the first Motown Records building is a museum where time has stood still and the legacy of founder Berry Gordy Jr. lives on. Everything looks exactly as it did when the famous superstars were created here. Countless global hits were produced in the legendary Studio A, which is also part of the tour.

A visit to the museum is only possible during a tour, which is best booked in advance → online, as the spots are limited and sell out several days in advance.

P.S. The Motown Museum will be expanded in the next few years and a large modern theater will be added!

The → Detroit Institute of Arts is much more than just an art collection. We spontaneously decided to visit the musem as it suddenly started raining and I’m super happy about it! The DIA is undoubtedly one of the best sights in Detroit and is one of the top museums in the USA.

It houses works of art and artifacts from different parts of the world and eras of history. From Ancient Egypt, Native American art and the European Middle Ages to Impressionism and modern art. You won’t miss Van Gogh, Picasso and co. here… just like antique sarcophagi or old German knights’ armor.  A super diverse collection!

The Detroit Institute of Arts is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm and costs 18 USD admission per adult!

Detroit Tigers Stadium

The Detroit Tigers are the most famous sports team in Detroit! The striking baseball stadium Comerica Park is located in the middle of the city. Be sure to check online during your visit to see if the team happens to be playing in Detroit. Watching a baseball game in the USA is a real experience and the view from the stands over the skyline of downtown Detroit is unique!

Fox Theatre

Just a few steps away from the stadium is the iconic Fox Theatre, with its famous sign, which is particularly beautiful in the evening. The theater is already 100 years old and is still the most famous one in Detroit. You might even have time to catch a performance or a concert! We only admired the theater itself from the outside, but even this is worthwhile for a typical Detroit snapshot.

The Fisher Building

Typical of the Detroit skyline are Art Deco-style skyscrapers, which were built in the “Golden 20s”. One of these iconic buildings is the Fisher Building, which has been described as “Detroit’s largest art piece”. As you enter, it feels like you are traveling back in time 100 years and can picture the lavish events that took place here. Shows are still performed in the Fisher Theater today. But you should definitely stop by for the design of the entrance hall alone!

Detroit River Walk & Cruise

The River Walk is the perfect place to enjoy a sunny day and stroll along the river. Many locals go jogging here, ride their bikes or sit under a tree to read.

The best place to start your walk is from William G. Milliken State Park to Hart Plaza. There’s a good chance you’ll see the Detroit River Princess on your way. The popular cruises on the Detroit River up to Lake Saint Clair take place on this ship, which is full of faces. The sunset cruises are said to be particularly beautiful.

This is an activity that we unfortunately had to cancel due to bad weather, but which I highly recommend: A cruise on the river is offered by various providers on everything from large ships to small private boats.

Of course you can also eat great food in Detroit – here are my restaurant tips for Detroit:

• Monarch Club: 20s vibes and one of the best rooftop bars in Detroit! Be sure to stop by the Monarch Club at sunset and enjoy great cocktails and delicious bar bites.
• Takoi: My favorite restaurant in Detroit! We got the tip from a local. Great vibes and incredibly tasty Thai cuisine in a hip ambience. The restaurant is located just outside of downtown, so it’s best to take an Uber/Lyft. From the outside, the restaurant looks very inconspicuous and is hard to find – from the inside, it is guaranteed to surprise you. It’s best to book in advance – it’s very popular with the locals.
• Detroit style pizza: We ate the best classic Detroit pizza at Buddy’s! A real classic.
• Coney Island: Another Detroit must-try. At Coney Island you can get Detroit style hot dogs. There are two places competing for first place. Lafayette Coney Island & America Coney Island – funnily enough, they are right next to each other. So you can try them both and choose your personal winner!
• Whitney Restaurant: a historic mansion in Midtown with an elegant ambience reminiscent of Detroit’s heyday
• Bad Luck: a great speakeasy bar in Downtown

Is Detroit safe?

I have been asked this question many times now. For this reason, in addition to the most beautiful sights in Detroit, I would also like to share my experiences on safety in Detroit with you:

The rise and fall of a metropolis

For a long time, Detroit was considered the most dangerous city in the USA. To understand this, you need to take a brief look back at Detroit’s history. In the early to mid-20th century, the Motor City was not only the center of the American automotive industry, but also one of the richest cities in the world, with around 2 million inhabitants!

After the oil crisis in the 1970s, more and more factories were gradually forced to close. People lost their jobs and moved out of the city. Those who stayed had little money. As a result, good residential areas in the suburbs slowly turned into poor neighborhoods where theft and crime were the order of the day. The population fell drastically to just 600,000 people, which means that even today downtown is often still very quiet.

What does Detroit look like today?

In the last 10 years, the city and its image have changed drastically, as the Motor City is increasingly transforming into an urban art and culture center with studios, street art centers and hip cafés.

We talked to many locals about this topic. For many, “Detroit is the best city to live in” and very safe. “Of course, there are still areas outside the city center that should be avoided” but this is true for every single city I have ever visited around the globe. We saw a lot of the city during our visit. There was no sign of violence or crime – instead we always felt safe. The locals are open and happy to share their city with visitors!

So don’t be put off by the scary stories and outdated headlines. Detroit has experienced a rebirth in the last 10 years and is still undergoing a transformation into a hip city for artists, music lovers and young people!

When traveling to Florida, most travelers first think of the Atlantic coast on the east side. But the state has so many more magical destinations to offer! In this post, I want to introduce you to an absolute insider tip in Florida, which for me is one of the most beautiful places in the USA: the Bradenton Gulf Islands!

The region in Manatee County, Florida, is characterized by the relaxed “Old Florida Charm” and is therefore perfect to enjoy the peace and nature, far away from the hustle and bustle of big city life. Instead of high-rise buildings and shopping malls, you will find flat and colorful houses as well as cute boutiques and cafés on the charming Bradenton Gulf Islands. 

Where are the Bradenton Gulf Islands?

If you’ve never heard of Bradenton, don’t worry – until our first trip to the west coast of Florida, this destination was completely new to me as well! But already after our first day, it was clear to me that it would become one of my favorite places. The Bradenton Gulf Islands are located on the West coast of Florida on the Gulf of Mexico. Here you’ll find some of the most beautiful sandy beaches in Florida and gorgeous blue water, just like in the Maldives. Thanks to their location, the islands are also the most beautiful place in Florida to watch stunning sunsets on the beach.

The Bradenton Gulf Islands consist of Bradenton Downtown, Longboat Key and my personal favorite, Anna Maria Island! There are also numerous small islands – called keys – and sandbars in the region.

What is the best way to get to the Bradenton Gulf Islands?

The nearest major international airport is in Tampa! Which is the ideal starting point for a Florida road trip, as Bradenton is less than an hour’s drive from the airport. It also only takes about two hours to get to the Bradenton Gulf Islands from Orlando. 

On the islands themselves, golf buggies and bicycles are the most popular means of transportation. Especially on Anna Maria Island, they have become indispensable. But you can also easily travel from point to point in a rental car.

If you want to travel back and forth between Anna Maria Island and Bradenton Downtown, the brand new water taxi shuttle is ideal.

When is the best travel time for the Bradenton Gulf Islands?

The Bradenton Gulf Islands offer warm and sunny weather all year round. They are therefore a popular destination for guests who want to escape the cold winter weather to enjoy warm sunny days and hardly any rain. January to April is therefore the peak season. In late spring, when the popular spring break travel season is over, things calm down and the weather is warm and summery. From July to the end of September, the rainy season begins, which is characterized by humid temperatures and plenty of rainy days. Of course, you can still have great weather during this time, but the chance of rain is significantly higher.

For me, the best time to travel to this insider tip in Florida is spring, into early summer, and late fall. We’ve been there in May two years in a row now and had fantastic weather!

How many days are ideal for your trip to the Bradenton Gulf Islands?

To really immerse yourself in island life and enjoy some of the most beautiful places on the Bradenton Gulf Islands, I recommend at least a week. The more time you have, the better!

Where is the ideal place to stay on the Bradenton Gulf Islands?

Anna Maria Island offers the perfect starting point for your vacation on the Bradenton Gulf Islands. Everywhere on the island you are within walking or cycling distance to the most beautiful beaches and best restaurants. I love the laid-back vibes on the island so much that we have now traveled to Anna Maria Island two years in a row. Alternatively, you can also find great beachfront accommodations and plenty of peace and quiet on Longboat Key.

For our last trip, we decided to book our own apartment instead of a hotel. This meant we not only had plenty of space, but also our own kitchen, washing machine and dryer as well as a private pool with barbecue area. This is the ideal choice, especially when traveling as a family or with friends.

A boat tour around the islands

This activity should definitely be on the agenda for your vacation on the Bradenton Gulf Islands: A boat tour offers you the unique opportunity to explore the blue waters around the Gulf Islands, including smaller keys and sandbanks that can only be reached by boat.

You can also get very close to the cutest inhabitants of the Bradenton Gulf Islands by boat: these are the manatees (sea cows), which can be found in the warm and shallow waters around the islands. The Bradenton Gulf Islands are also one of the few places in the world where dolphins can be seen all year round. Normally, the animals change their habitat depending on the season and migrate between different waters. However, around 150 bottlenose dolphins have found their year-round home here in Bradenton, as there is plenty of food and habitat for them. So a boat trip is a must if you don’t want to miss the cute locals.

My highlight was our boat trip with the → Anna Maria Dolphin Tours, which started in the morning and continued until the afternoon. Our captain showed us his favorite spots during the private tour:

Egmont Key, a protected island where numerous birds, land turtles can be observed. The beaches, which can only be reached by boat, are deserted and surrounded by shallow blue waters. There are also beautiful smaller and larger sandbanks nearby, which are ideal for sunbathing and swimming.

Discover Bradenton Downtown

It’s not just the Bradenton Islands that are worth a visit. You should also see downtown. As already mentioned, this can be ideally combined with a water taxi tour: The shuttle departs from two stops on Anna Maria Island to the Bradenton Downtown Marina on the Manatee River and then back again. The boat trip takes longer than by car, but is very relaxing.

Highlights in Bradenton Downtown that you can discover on a day visit:

• The Parker Manatee Rehabilitation Habitat at the Bishop Museum of Science and Nature, provides a temporary home for manatees who have become ill or injured in the wild.
• Village of the Arts – just a few blocks from Bradenton Downtown is the Village of the Arts. A neighborhood of colorfully painted and individually designed houses, which are primarily home to galleries and individual restaurants. Every first Friday evening and every Saturday of the month, a big happening takes place here. Local artists and producers set up stalls by the roadside, galleries are open and bands play in the restaurants. Art lovers and individualists should definitely not miss this! P.S. In the Birdrock Taco Shack you will find delicious and unique tacos with many veggie variations and directly opposite in the Adobe Graffiti Lounge you can relax in the backyard and enjoy cool drinks.
• The Oak & Stone restaurant has a great rooftop terrace with a view over the marina and the Manatee River. Plus they serve great pizza!
• On Old Main Street you will find small restaurants, bars and stores. I particularly love the small boutique Pink & Navy with lots of local and sustainable brands for summer clothing and accessories! Be sure to stop by! (P.S. There is a second store on Pine Avenue on Anna Maria Island)

Pure nature in the Robinson Preserve

For nature lovers, a trip to the Robinson Preserve is just the thing! In this nature reserve, in the northwest of Bradenton, the natural coastal vegetation of the region and its inhabitants can thrive undisturbed. To explore Robinson Preserve, footpaths and cycle paths lead through the area with short to longer loop trails. The routes that lead over the mangrove forests on footbridges are particularly beautiful. Numerous water birds, crabs and fish can be observed along the way. There are even picnic and barbecue areas in the park.

Please note: On particularly hot days, you should definitely avoid the midday and afternoon heat, as there are only a few shady spots. Also remember to pack enough water, as there is no place to buy drinks in the park.

Another way to enjoy this peaceful idyll is on the water. Kayaks can be hired in the Robibinson Preserve to take you through the natural channels through the mangroves. You should make a reservation at least one day in advance → You can book your kayak tour here!

The historic fishing village of Cortez

As the name suggests, the fishing village of Cortez lives mainly from fishing. The inhabitants of Florida’s oldest fishing village attach great importance to tradition and still uphold it today. At the harbor there are restaurants with bars directly on the fishing pier above the water, from which you can watch countless pelicans and mangrove forests in a rustic and cozy ambience.

Longboat Key – Pure relaxation on the Bradenton Gulf Islands

Longboat Key is located directly off Anna Maria Island and can be reached in just a few minutes via a bridge. The narrow but 17 km / 11 miles long island is characterized by equally beautiful beaches and cosy accommodation. Longboat Key is particularly popular with the locals, but the island is also a real insider tip for visitors, as it is at least as relaxed here as it is on Anna Maria Island.

The Bradenton Gulf Islands have quickly gained a special place in my heart. Even today, they still reflect the “real and relaxed Florida” that is rarely experienced. You won’t find huge clubs and malls here, nor large restaurant and all-inclusive hotel chains. Instead, you will find a wonderful warm welcome, individual boutiques and restaurants, cute accommodations and a perfectly relaxed island life! Experience this insider tip for yourself on your next trip to Florida and fall in love with the Bradenton Gulf Islands as well!

The best beaches on Oahu

The South

The densely populated and hotel-lined south side of Oahu offers less “secluded beaches” but also has its charms: these are the most beautiful beaches in the south of Oahu:

Waikiki Beach

Although Honolulu is in no way the definition of Hawaii for me personally, a walk on Waikiki Beach is a must on your list. Even though I’ve never laid down here to sunbathe & swim, Waikiki Beach is perfect for people watching, sipping a cocktail in the sun and watching the hustle and bustle.

→ Insider tip: The coolest beach access to Waikiki Beach is from Kalākaua Avenue via Surfboards Street (just after the Cheesecake Factory). The path is lined with surfboards and you’ll arrive right at the photogenic The Royal Hawaiian Hotel.

• Visitor volume: Very high – The most famous beach in Hawaii (or even the world?) is ALWAYS well visited.
• Accessibility: Easy on foot, but more difficult by car as parking is limited and expensive.
• Are there showers on site? Yes, but not yet in all places
• Is there the possibility to buy snacks / drinks on site? Yes
• Suitable for swimming? Yes

Ala Moana Beach

You are in Honolulu, want to relax on the beach and Waikiki Beach is too loud and crowded for you? No problem! Only a few minutes away from Waikiki, there is a real insider tip in Honolulu: the Ala Moana Beach Park. Hardly any tourists ever come here, because there are no bars or souvenir stores, but the locals love it all the more. We first discovered this beach during our last Oahu visit and were immediately in love. Thanks to its location, you overlook the Waikiki skyline and Diamond Head, as well as surfers in the water. In the evening you can also enjoy the sunset. Locals meet here to jog, work out, barbecue and sit together. It’s a great atmosphere and a great contrast to touristy Waikiki Beach.

• Visitor volume: Moderate to High – most visited during sunset, early morning (athletes) and weekends.
• Accessibility: Good on foot and very good by car, there is plenty of free parking.
• Are there showers on site? Yes
• Is there a possibility to buy snacks / drinks on site? No
• Suitable for swimming? Yes

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve in the Southeast

At the southeast tip is not only one of the most beautiful beaches on Oahu but also the most famous snorkeling spot on the island: Hanauma Bay! The bay is an ancient volcanic crater that protects the bay from strong currents and waves, making it the perfect location for corals, fish and turtles. Because of this uniqueness, Hanauma Bay is a protected area and strict entrance regulations apply:

• A paid reservation is required
• Cost: $25 per adult (children 12 & under free) + $3 parking.
• Closed Mondays & Tuesdays to allow the reef to recover
• Admission Wednesday – Sunday from 6:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (Closing time: 4 p.m., but you must leave the beach after 3:30 p.m.)

Hanauma Bay is incredibly popular and admission is strictly limited, so you should make your reservation several days before your planned visit.

You’ll have the best snorkeling conditions during a Wednesday visit (after the bay has been closed for two days) as well as early morning!

• Visitor volume: Moderate to High – strictly limited and by reservation only.
• Accessibility: Good – there is paid parking. After entering, there is about a 15 minute walk. It gets a little more strenuous on the way there downhill and on the way back. However, there is also a shuttle on site for a fee
• Are there showers on site? Yes
• Is there the possibility to buy snacks / drinks on site? Yes
• Suitable for swimming? Yes

Where else on Oahu is good snorkeling?

Alternatives to Hanauma Bay:

• Kahe Point Beach Park in the east. It is also called “Electric Beach” because it is located near an electric power plant. Therefore you should not expect a dream beach, BUT the underwater world is one of the most beautiful on Oahu.
• Kuilima Cove in the north. This spot is perfect for beginners due to its protected location. The beach belongs to Turtle Bay Resort, but is open to everyone for free.
• Waimea Bay Beach in the north. Both a gorgeous sandy beach and an impressive snorkeling spot. With a little luck, seals (Hawaiian Monk Seals) can also be seen here!

The East

Between dream beaches and secret spots – the east of the island definitely has the most beautiful beaches on Oahu to offer! These are my favorites, which you can’t miss:

Makapu’u Beach

Imagine white sandy beach with turquoise blue water, black lava formations and green covered mountains in the background! All this embodied in the small Makapu’u Beach. When driving around the island, you can’t miss the Makapu’u Lookout, just a few meters in front of it! It offers the perfect view of the beach and the entire dream scenery! This special view always takes my breath away!

• Visitor volume: Low to moderate
• Accessibility: Good – there is a free parking lot with a small number of parking spaces.
• Are there showers on site? Yes
• Is there the possibility to buy snacks / drinks on site? No
• Suitable for swimming? Yes

Waimanalo Beach

My absolute favorite beach on Oahu and for me also the most beautiful beach in the world! Waimanalo Beach has a very special place in my heart. The endless sandy beach has a great spot for everyone and the waves are usually just right to swim in without fear of being pushed too far out.

On weekends, it’s a popular spot for locals for BBQ’s and get-togethers with friends and family. Some even drive their trucks right up to the beach. A visit during the week is therefore much more relaxed – as a vacationer you always have time

Although there are no coconut trees at Waimanalo Beach (which, by the way, are not originally native to Hawaii, but were only ‘brought in’), but the conifers typical for Hawaii, but the view of the green overgrown cliffs and the island of Lanikai is just paradise.

• Visitor Volume: Low to moderate during the week, higher on weekends
• Accessibility: Very good – there are a total of two different parking lots directly on the beach
• Are there showers on site? Yes
• Is there a possibility to buy snacks / drinks on site? No
• Suitable for swimming? Yes, if you are a good swimmer. Children should be accompanied in the water because of the waves.

Ka’a’awa Beach

A small and cute beach on Oahu, which is probably the most beautiful photo spot on the island! Ka’a’awa Beach offers a dreamlike photo backdrop, which seems to have sprung from a paradisiacal postcard. The beach itself is very narrow and offers hardly any space to spread out a towel in the dry, but a side trip to K’a’awa Beach should not be missed during your Oahu trip! Once you see this place with your own eyes, you’ll know why!

• Visitor Volume: Rather low, many visitors only stay on site for a short time, as the beach doesn’t offer much sunbathing opportunities.
• Accessibility: Very good – the beach is right next to the road. If you park your car on the side of the road and open the door, you are almost standing with your feet in the water.
• Are there showers on site? Yes
• Is there a possibility to buy snacks / drinks on site? No
• Suitable for swimming? Yes

The North:

The north of the island is known for its high waves and strong currents. Therefore, it is not the ideal coast for swimming, however, here you will find the best beaches on Oahu for watching surfers and admiring ‘locals from the sea’…

Sunset Beach North Shore

Sunset Beach, as the name suggests, is not only a beautiful place to admire the descending sun, but primarily known for watching surfers and the highest waves on the island! In winter, international surfing competitions are held at this very spot. But even if you miss this period, you will see talented surfers surfing here all year round. Really impressive! However, swimming can be life-threatening due to the high waves. So at Sunset Beach, you’re more likely to stay dry.

• Visitor Volume: Moderate (high during competitions).
• Accessibility: Very good – there is a big parking lot at the beach.
• Are there showers on site? Yes
• Is there a possibility to buy snacks / drinks on site? No
• Suitable for swimming? No

Laniakea Beach

The best beach on Oahu for turtle watching is Laniakea Beach. Here you have, especially at sunset, daily an almost 100% certainty to meet the gentle giants while sunbathing and relaxing. Usually there is a turtle expert on site, who roughly marks out the area around the animals and answers questions from visitors. This way, the green sea turtles, which are unfortunately threatened with extinction, can recharge their batteries in peace and safety before they crawl back into the waves.

• Visitor Volume: Moderate
• Accessibility: Very good – there is parking on the opposite side of the road.
• Are there showers on site? No
• Is there the possibility to buy snacks / drinks on site? No
• Suitable for swimming? Rather less, due to large stones in the water and strong currents.

The West:

Last but not least, the west coast must not be missing in this article with the most beautiful beaches on Oahu. In contrast to the south, the west is much less populated and there are no large hotels and shopping centers. When driving by car, to the western end of that road that leads around the island, you constantly see great sandy beaches. But most of them invite little to stop. But this is not because of the natural conditions, but because of the fact that there are alarmingly many tent colonies of homeless people settled here. It is hard to find a place which is not used as a campground… unfortunately, there are also garbage accumulations and the like to see… this I have never seen in Hawaii in this mass.

Nevertheless, a trip to the west side is worthwhile:

Keawaula Beach 

This beach has easily made it onto my list of the most beautiful beaches on Oahu: Keawaula Beach Park. Thanks to its location at the west end of the road, it’s the perfect spot to admire the sunset! Also the above mentioned colonies of tents are not to be found here!

But beware: Punctually at 7 pm, a ranger closes the barrier of the entrance to the parking lots. Who has not gone out before, must be until the next morning. however, there are some pitches on the roadside, which are still in front of this barrier and are accessible around the clock. So if you plan to visit Keawaula beach at sunset, you should definitely park your car there. You can enter and leave the beach on foot at any time – only the parking lot is closed off.

• Accessibility: Very good (parking possibilities see above)
• Are there showers on site? Yes
• Is there a possibility to buy snacks / drinks on site? No
• Suitable for swimming? Yes

→ Tip: Although the road ends at this point, the Ka’ena Point hiking trail begins at the end of Kawwaula Beach. This leads to exactly the same place where the coastal road ends on the north coast. This is 4.2 miles / 6.7 kilometers per route, for which you should plan about 1.5 hours. You can also just hike a bit along the coast and then return to your starting point. Worth seeing is in any case the Monk Seal Beach, which is only accessible via this hike and where you can most likely see seals on the beach!

The beaches on Oahu are so diverse that the island has the perfect beach for everyone! Whether you want to snorkel, relax, experience something or swim in the waves – among the best beaches on Oahu you will surely find your personal favorite!

How Many Days are Ideal for a Road Trip Through Utah?

To fully experience the highlights of Utah, I recommend dedicating at least five to seven days. This timeframe allows you to visit all five national parks – Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, and Zion – and also explore some lesser-known hidden gems.

When is the best time for your Road Trip?

The best time for your road trip through Utah depends on your preferences and travel plans. Spring and fall are the most popular choices as the weather is mild, and the landscapes bloom with wildflowers or display vibrant autumn colors. Additionally the national parks will be less crowded compared to the summer months.

What is the best Start and End Point for your Utah road trip?

For your road trip through Utah, the cities of Salt Lake City or Las Vegas serve as ideal start and end points. Both cities offer excellent international flight connections. We personally chose Las Vegas as we combined our road trip with some relaxation in Vegas and additional  stops in Arizona.

Is it worth getting the US National Park Annual Pass?

YES! The Annual Pass costs you 80$ and is valid for 12 months and for all US National Parks. It not only covers the buyer but a maximum of three additional adults traveling in the same vehicle as you! Plus you can transfer the pass to another person as it can be signed by two main owners! It definitely saves you a lot of money, especially if you’re planning to visit additional Nations Parks than the ones in Utah. You can purchase the Annual Pass at most Federal Recreation Sites, mostly at the National Park entrance stations or → online.

The best things to see on you Utah Road Trip – Utah’s National Parks & Other Highlights

Monument Valley

Coming from Arizona, our first stop on this epic Utah road trip has been Monument Valley, located on the border between Utah and Arizona within the Navajo Nation territory. It is exclusively maintained by the Navajo people. Even today there are still around 100 of them, still living in Monument valley. This iconic park has been the scene for numerous movies, especially classic Westerns. Don’t miss the famous viewpoint named after renowned actor and director John Ford – John Ford’s Point.

A visit of 1,5 – 3 hours gives you enough time to explore Monument valley, as not all parts are open to public and you can go everywhere by car.

Remember that Monument Valley is a desert, so prepare for the heat with temperatures often exceeding 30 or 40 degrees Celsius in the summer. Also keep in mind that Arizona does not observe Daylight Saving Time, so be mindful of the one hour time difference if you’re traveling during the summer months. Your phone will always jump back and forth between both time zones, as the park is located directly on the border of Utah and Arizona.

Since Monument Valley is not a National Park you can’t use your Annual Pass but have to pay an entrance fee of 8$ per person.

Bonus Tips:

For an amazing view, head to the Monument Valley Overlook just outside to take a photo with the backdrop of the world famous ‚Forest Gump‘ scene. If you have time, you should also plan a short stop at the Valley of the Gods. The rock formations reminded me of the ones in Monument Valley. But in the Valley of the Gods it is possible to camp, you don’t have to pay and entrance fee and you can fly your drone.

Canyonlands National Park – A rugged Landscape

Canyonlands National Park is a must-visit destination on your road trip through Utah.  famous for its rugged landscape created by erosion over thousands and thousands of years. With its vast canyons, towering mesas, and winding rivers, Canyonlands National Park is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.

This vast park is divided into four different sections. If your time is limited and you only want to experience the highlights, focus on the “Island in the Sky”. This huge mesa sits over 1,000 feet above the surrounding terrain, offering panoramic views that stretch for miles. You can either hike or reach all view points by car. Here are my favorite ones which you simply can’t miss during your visit:

• Mesa Arch: This iconic arch is perched on the edge of a cliff and frames a spectacular view of the surrounding canyons and rock formations. It’s a popular spot for photographers, especially during sunrise when the golden light illuminates the arch and creates a magical atmosphere.
• Grand View Point
• Green River View Point: My favorite view point! If you stand in front of the main view point and hike a few minutes to the right (having the valley on your left side) you will find the most insane spot, overlooking the Green River.
• Shafer Trail Lookout 

Bonus Tip:

The Dead Horse Point State Park is a small but beautiful park at a cliffside offering a stunning view over the Colorado River which formed a spectacular landscape. It is especially magical during sunset!

Arches National Park – Nature’s Masterpiece

Arches National Park, is a true masterpiece of nature with over 2,000 natural stone arches, balancing rocks, and fascinating sandstone formations. Delicate Arch and Landscape Arch are iconic highlights that shouldn’t be missed. If you’re into night photography, Arches National Park is your place to be! During a clear nicht you can capture a million stars with the stunning foreground of the natural arches.

Capitol Reef National Park –  a Hidden Gem on your Road Trip through Utah

Capitol Reef National Park may be the least visited of Utah’s national parks, but it is an absolute gem waiting to be discovered. Here, you’ll encounter the Waterpocket Fold, a stunning warp in the Earth’s crust, and colorful slot canyons like Cassidy Arch Trail.

You can explore most of the park by car and drive on sandy roads through the canyons which is only possible in the US if you ask me! Also take a look at the historic petroglyphs which can be found along the road.

Bonus Tip:

Visit the colorful Bentonite Hills, where sediments of various colors have created stunning hills. They are a stunning scene for photos. There are various ‚bentonite hills‘ nearby the Capitol Reef National Park but only one location has low hills which allow you to climb up on them. We had a hard time finding the right ones so I shared the exact coordinates via the map above with you!

The best time to come here is during blue hour (either before sunrise or after sunset) BUT if you had trouble finding this spot (like us ) then an ND Filter for your drone will help you capturing the colors. We shot with ND 256 & it really worked well to filter the heavy midday sun.

If you come here please remember to LEAVE NO TRACE. The Bentonite Hills are located in the middle of nowhere with no trash cans nearby. So PLEASE take everything you brought with you before leaving. Remember to bring plenty of water – especially during a sunny day. Also don’t come here during or shortly after heavy rain falls AND always with a sturdy vehicle which is suitable for off road tracks. You’ll need to drive off road for quite a while.

Bryce Canyon National Park – Castles of the Hoodoos

Our next destination is the fascinating Bryce Canyon National Park, a mesmerizing wonderland of unique rock formations known as hoodoos. These hoodoos resemble intricate sandcastles standing proudly on the canyon floor. Marvel at the stunning orange and red hues of the rock spires and the beautiful interplay of light and shadows. For the best experience, explore the park from various viewpoints along the rim or hike down into the heart of the hoodoos on the Navajo Loop Trail and Queen’s Garden Trail.

During our trip here in April, huge parts of the park were still closed due to (melting) snow masses. Yes you heard that right! During spring visits you may most likely still encounter snow in Bryce Canyon. But white makes a great contrast in photos against the orange of the rocks. 

The best view places we were able to visit were:

• Mossy Cave Trail: a short and easy hike with great sights
• Bryce Point & Sunset Point: for stunning views over the hoodoos, both accessible by car

Zion National Park – Nature’s Masterpiece

Even though Zion is considered the most breathtaking National Park in Utah we unfortunately had to skip it during our road trip due to lack of time. But definitely add it on your own Utah road trip itinerary!  With soaring red cliffs, lush greenery, and the Virgin River meandering through the canyon, Zion is a paradise for nature lovers alike. Hiking is the best way to immerse yourself in Zion’s splendor, with iconic trails like Angel’s Landing and The Narrows providing unforgettable adventures. For more secluded hiking experience, try the Subway Trail!
