Andalusia is probably Spain’s best-known region, yet it is full of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. The name alone exudes a sense of freedom and wanderlust. Andalusia is characterised by endless landscapes, mesmerizing beaches, enchanting nature and its typical white villages – combined with well-developed roads and manageable distances. This makes it ideal for a road trip. You can expect the perfect mix of city, nature and relaxation.

In my post, I would like to present a possible route for your tour of Andalusia, accompanied, as always, by my personal tips. The focus of this route is on conscious travel and enjoyment. My aim was not to ‘tick off’ as many highlights as possible, but to allow enough time for relaxation and to immerse yourself in the Andalusian way of life. A wonderful, unforgettable experience!

As usual, I have marked all the highlights and spots for you on a map of Andalusia.

How many days should you plan for your Andalusia road trip?

To visit the most beautiful places in Andalusia at a leisurely pace, you should plan at least 7 days for your road trip – or even better, a few days more.

Possible itinerary:

• 2 days in Seville – explore the famous and beautiful capital of Andalusia
• 2-3 days inland – Discover nature and visit some of the authentic Pueblos Blancos (white villages)
• 2 days Costa del Sol – Relax on the beach and stroll through the villages

You should definitely not plan less time than this, otherwise your trip through Andalusia could quickly become stressful!

When is the best time to go on your Andalusia road trip?

Andalusia is in the south of Spain, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.

Outside of Seville, it can be quiet even during the summer holidays, as the region is still an insider tip in Spain, but the heat can be very unpleasant for a tour of Andalusia. Therefore, I recommend spring (April – June) or autumn (September – October). It is simply the best time to travel to Andalusia, with ideal weather.

The ideal route for your Andalusia road trip

Start: Seville (2 days)

The Andalusian capital Seville is the ideal starting point for your round trip, and not just for logistical reasons. Seville offers you a grand welcome to the Andalusian way of life, with lots of history and delicious tapas. Be sure to plan 2 full days!

You’ll love exploring the historic old town and sampling your way through the countless tapas bars. In the evening, at sunset, make yourself comfortable in one of the rooftop bars and enjoy the fantastic view with a delicious drink.

My Tip: I recommend picking up your rental car at the end of your stay in Seville, as the city is easy to explore on foot.

Querencia de Sevilla, Autograph Collection

A beautiful hotel in the heart of Seville, perfectly located for strolls through the old town and featuring a stunning rooftop terrace with a pool and bar offering unique views over the city.

Pueblos Blancos – The White Villages (at least 2 days)

The Pueblos Blancos are probably the most striking image of Andalusia. The route, which connects a total of 19 white villages, winds its way through the mountainous landscape. It is simply an indescribable feeling to see the cute villages sparkling from afar. A sight that is an absolute must during your Andalusia road trip!

In addition to their whitewashed houses, all the villages are characterised by their Moorish roots. Narrow streets and small squares invite you to stroll around. You will often find the remains of Moorish castles. The colourful floral decorations attached to many houses are super pretty and shine cheerfully against the white walls.

However, I find their mostly spectacular location on steep mountain slopes or rocky outcrops most impressive. They offer fantastic views of the countryside and the sea.

Travel time: Without stops – which I definitely do not recommend – the route takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Please note: Some of the roads are very narrow, so you should drive carefully. This also allows you to enjoy the view much better.

My recommended stops:

First things first: every one of these villages is worth a visit! All of the ones we explored were incredibly charming and peaceful. It felt like we had them all to ourselves. You simply have to see their charm for yourself. Here is just a small selection of my highlights:

• Arcos de la Frontera – one of the most famous pueblos blancos, perched on a rock with cliffs on both sides offering spectacular views of the region

• Zahara de la Sierra – located on a mountain with a turquoise reservoir, also known for its olive groves

• Setenil de las Bodegas – built in a gorge & unique because its houses were built into the surrounding rocks. You should definitely check it out!

You can find recommended places to stay in the direction of Ronda or in the countryside.

Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park (1-2 days)

The breathtaking Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park should definitely be on your itinerary when travelling through Andalusia. It is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and one of the rainiest regions in Spain, which is reflected in its lush green landscape with deep gorges. A true paradise for hiking and climbing!

Recommended activities:

Go on a short hike or simply enjoy a scenic drive. You can take your time and visit the many great viewpoints in the nature park.

If you want to take more time and experience a little more action, why not take the opportunity to go on a canyoning tour? I had a lot of fun doing this, although you should be prepared to get wet from time to time. But that’s easy to accept, because you don’t get an adventure like this every day.

Another item on my bucket list is the Vía Ferrata El Caimán (Via Ferrata is the name given to various spectacular climbing routes in Spain). It features numerous bridges and impressive passages. However, you should be in good physical condition and have a little courage. Please note: only undertake this tour with a guide!

A highlight in Andalusia: Ronda (1-2 days)

My favourite town in Andalusia is Ronda – perched on a rocky plateau, with a beautiful 120-metre-deep canyon (El Tajo Gorge) spanned by a bridge that is more than 200 years old. Simply spectacular! The white houses, some of which seem to cling to the edge of the precipice, are also typical here. I highly recommend planning a visit in Ronda during your Andalusia road trip.

A popular viewpoint offers a magnificent view of the striking Puente Nuevo bridge, which spans the gorge with a small waterfall below. I have marked the spot on my map. It is an absolute highlight in Ronda! The path is a bit strenuous to walk, especially the way back, which is quite steep, but it is well maintained. The best time to visit is late in the afternoon or shortly before sunset, when the bridge is illuminated by the sun.

Ronda has also magically attracted many artists and writers. No wonder, because the town is truly enchanting. Let yourself be seduced and stroll leisurely through the pretty old town with its small cafés and shops. It’s hard to imagine a more relaxing way to enjoy your holiday.

Olive oil experience

Not far from Ronda is the La Almazara olive oil mill. It is part of LA Organic and produces high-quality organic olive oil. The facility houses a restaurant with a museum and is set in a picturesque backdrop of olive groves, vineyards and lavender fields. From the restaurant, which has been designed in a striking and very special way, you can enjoy fantastic views of the endless expanse of the Andalusian landscape.

During a guided tour, you will gain an insight into olive oil production and, of course, you can also taste the olive oil. Important: you should book the tour and tasting in advance.

Optional: Ubrique

If you have time and feel like it, you can make a short stop in Ubrique on your way to the coast. The village is also one of the Pueblos Blancos and boasts a colourful church on the main square. It is also known for its traditional leather production. It’s hard to believe that Spain’s main suppliers of the highest quality leather, which is sourced by world-renowned designers, are located here.

Ubrique is optional for your Andalusia road trip, but not a must-see.

Costa del Sol (at least 2 days)

What would a trip through Spain without a detour to one of its sun-kissed coasts? With at least 300 days of sunshine per year, the Costa del Sol lives up to its name and is the perfect place to relax and end your Andalusia road trip. The key question is whether you prefer a quieter or livelier atmosphere.

Quieter: The towns of Nerja and Estepona are located at the outer points of the Costa del Sol and exude a relaxed holiday atmosphere on beautiful beaches. Nerja is also famous for its coastal promenade, which runs along a rocky outcrop with breathtaking views of the sea and the surrounding mountains. Estepona charms visitors with its lovely, flower-filled old town.

Livelier: Marbella is not only more busy, but also more luxurious. Glamour, marinas, boutiques, a beautiful old town with dreamy alleys against a picturesque mountain backdrop characterise the city. Perhaps you would like to immerse yourself in this very special atmosphere and stroll through Marbella among the “rich and beautiful”. Of course, you will also find fantastic beaches for sunbathing and swimming here.

Activities:

• Beach walks
• Sunsets
• Beach clubs

Extra tip: I recommend visiting one of the numerous wineries on the Costa del Sol. It’s simply wonderful to stroll through the vineyards and enjoy delicious Spanish wine in the sun. For me, this is definitely a must-do during a Andalusia road trip.

Practical tips for your Andalusia road trip

Car hire

It is much more practical to rent a smaller car, as your Andalusia road trip will often take you along narrow roads.

Parking in old towns is usually difficult, so it is best to park just outside.

Timing

• Start early to avoid the crowds.
• Be aware of the midday heat in summer and always carry enough water with you.
• Avoid weekends for the more popular destinations such as Ronda or Seville.

Planning

Of course, you can also plan your road trip in the opposite direction. In this case, you could start on the Costa del Sol and then drive towards Seville.

In any case, plan your trip so that you can enjoy a stress-free time. So: don’t make too many stops, but really focus on quality instead of quantity. The journey itself is something very special and part of your experience. Just enjoy the dreamy landscapes, the sun and the Spanish way of life.

Why should a road trip through Andalusia be on your bucket list for Spain?

Andalusia has so much to offer – spectacular mountain landscapes, enchanting nature, white beaches and villages, magnificent Moorish buildings… The list could go on and on, considering that Andalusia is also the land of flamenco, sherry and horses. A trip through this incomparable region is simply amazing! You can expect a perfect balance between nature, authentic villages, relaxation by the sea, city strolls and excellent cuisine. And all this without having to travel long distances.

Who doesn’t immediately think of Seville thinking about the famous opera ‘Carmen’? It’s no coincidence that the composer chose the city’s impressive backdrop as the setting for his work. Seville is not only the capital of Andalusia in Spain, but also the cultural heart of the region. For centuries, this has been shown in its Moorish heritage, combined with the Spanish way of life, tapas and flamenco.

The compact city is ideal for an intensive and exciting city break, as Seville’s sights are almost seamlessly strung together – architectural masterpieces from all eras. How many days should you plan for Seville?

Three to four days are ideal to see all of Seville’s sights at a leisurely pace and still having enough time for tapas and rooftop bars.

If you only have a weekend, it is of course possible to explore the city in two days, but this requires a tight schedule.

Spending more time in a beautiful place is always worthwhile, and Seville is definitely one of those destinations. The city is often referred to as the capital of flamenco. So where else could you experience it more consciously than here?

When is the best time to visit Seville?

The ideal months are March to May and September to October, as the temperatures are pleasant and perfect for sightseeing. Evenings are not too cool to stroll through the city.

Summers are correspondingly hot (often over 35 °C). If you are planning your trip to Seville at this time, it is advisable to schedule all activities in the morning or evening.

Winters here are quite mild and you will encounter fewer tourists – so it’s also a great travel period if you want to explore Seville in peace.

Must-see sights in Seville

Plaza de España – Seville’s most iconic square

It’s hard to imagine visiting Seville without strolling across the legendary Plaza de España at least once. It feels almost magical to experience this impressive square up close and not just look at it in a photo. Seville owes its monumental semicircular architecture to the great architect Aníbal González Álvarez-Ossorio in the run-up to the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition. Framed by a beautiful park and surrounded by a 515-metre-long canal, the Plaza de España is one of the most spectacular monuments in Europe and, of course, one of Seville’s most popular sights.

An absolute classic: hire a rowing boat and enjoy a trip along the canal – past the majestic buildings and under the bridges – pure romance! Important: only cash payments are accepted for the boats, so make sure to pack some Euros. We paid €10 for a trip.

Real Alcázar de Sevilla – the most beautiful place in the city

As early as 913, the Moors laid the foundation stone for the royal palace – Real Alcázar de Sevilla. Over the centuries, it served as a residence for many rulers. Each of them expanded the huge complex, leaving behind traces of their culture and architectural style. As a result, the palace is a fascinating blend of Moorish, Gothic and Renaissance architecture. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and is the oldest royal palace in Europe still in use today – when the Spanish king comes to Seville, he resides here.

The best way to see it is on foot. The palace gardens are also breathtakingly beautiful and extensive, so you can easily lose yourself in them.

Game of Thrones fans take note: The palace – and especially the gardens – served as the filming location for the water gardens of Dorne.

Of course, the Real Alcázar de Sevilla is one of, if not THE top attraction in Seville and therefore an absolute must-see! Due to its popularity, many visitors flock here every day, so it is advisable to book tickets in advance.

Catedral de Sevilla

Another highlight in Seville is the Cathedral of Santa María de la Sede, whose construction began in the early 15th century. After St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican and St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, it is the third largest church and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A main attraction inside is the tomb of Christopher Columbus, who found his final resting place here.

The Giralda – formerly a minaret and now the cathedral’s bell tower – is THE landmark of Seville. The way up is easy thanks to 35 ramps (instead of stairs) and offers a spectacular view over the rooftops of the city.

Metropol Parasol (‘Las Setas’) – a modern contrast to the old town

The Metropol Parasol (also known as Las Setas – ‘the mushrooms’) is a large avant-garde wooden artwork. Located in the heart of the city, it forms a big contrast to the otherwise historic architecture. Designed by German architect Jürgen Mayer H., it has become another landmark of Seville.

From the Metropol Parasol, you can enjoy a fantastic view over the city. It is especially beautiful here at sunset.

Triana district – authentic Seville

Seville is vibrant and fun-loving. Life itself gives the Sevillanos and Sevillanas plenty of reasons to simply enjoy themselves. In the afternoon, they like to meet up for a round of tapas – especially at the weekend. The Triana district, on the other side of the Guadalquivir, is particularly popular. It used to be a poor neighbourhood where sailors and craftsmen lived. Ceramic production was one of the most common crafts. This is still evident in the many colourful murals made from typical tiles that can be admired in Triana.

Today, it is the new hip district. From the early evening hours, the riverbank becomes lively, as the sunset light is particularly enchanting here. Triana is known for its top-notch tapas bars and its flamenco tradition. For me, it’s one of the best sights in Seville – and it is less touristy than the old town! Take a relaxing evening stroll through this beautiful neighbourhood and enjoy dinner in one of the traditional bars.

To really immerse yourself in the diversity and enjoyment of tapas, we recommend a guided tour of several tapas bars – a culinary and cultural must-do in Seville. Guided because the guides take you to bars that only the locals know about, where you can enjoy the most authentic tapas and traditional flamenco. This is Seville at its best!

If you discover a passion for flamenco, I recommend visiting the world’s only flamenco museum, located here in Seville. Flamenco combines many cultures that have found their way into Spain over the centuries and is listed as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.

The creative tapas at The Tigers House are a modern interpretation of Andalusian cuisine. Highly recommended!

• Bodeguita Antonio Romero – very local & lively:

If you want to experience Andalusian temperament, you’re guaranteed to find it here. You can expect a great atmosphere in one of the hottest after-work spots for locals – which is why it’s also very popular during the week!

• Casa Moreno – a real insider tip:

At first glance, Casa Moreno looks like a small local supermarket. In fact, it houses a little tapas bar focusing on cold cuts, cheese, small tapas and drinks. It is very popular with students and is perfect for an aperitif before dinner.

• Los Seises Sevilla – drinks with a view of the cathedral:

You can enjoy a good drink in a stylish atmosphere at Los Seises Sevilla, which is in a wonderful location in the middle of the old town. The rooftop bar also offers a great view of the cathedral. It’s best to enjoy it at sunset – simply fantastic!

Alternatively the rooftop bar of the Querencia de Sevilla Hotel offers an even closer view at the cathedral and overlooks the entire old town!

Road trip through Andalusia

A road trip through Andalusia is more than just an exciting journey. This adventure gives you a feeling of freedom that you can hardly find anywhere else. Small hidden villages, dreamy landscapes and olive groves.

As already mentioned, Seville is the perfect starting point. The city has excellent infrastructure and good car rental connections.

Usedom – the famous island at the Baltic Sea – is located in the north-easternmost tip of Germany. It has been one of Germany’s top travel destinations for years, but why? In summer, it is probably the 40-kilometre-long fine sandy beach that attracts numerous travelers. It is not only the longest beach in Germany but also one of the most beautiful ones. As early as the 19th century, the imperial family came here to relax, and certainly not without reason.

But what makes Usedom so attractive in winter? Imagine a walk on the beach at sunrise – glistening golden light slowly rising and bathing everything around you in a magical fairy-tale world. A winter morning by the sea here on Usedom – believe me, it will touch your heart! Usedom in winter is simply infinitely beautiful and also surprisingly diverse: significantly less hustle and bustle than in other seasons, lots of nature, great wellness hotels and a relaxed atmosphere that is perfect for a short break or a long weekend.

In this post, I would like to tell you a little more about our time on the island of Usedom, which we spent here in January, and I will introduce you to five wellness hotels. Of course, you will also find my personal tips for things to do in winter as well as information on the best sights on Usedom.

Usedom in winter – a wellness oasis

Why is Usedom an ideal destination in winter?

Oh yes, walks on the beach on Usedom in winter are truly magical, especially in the morning. The day starts much later than in summer, so you don’t have to get up so early to watch the sun rise over the sea. If you are lucky, as we were, winter will have decorated the Baltic Sea with ice floes, making the atmosphere even more enchanting. The tranquillity and endless expanse are simply magical. January is particularly quiet as it is not yet the school holidays.

Many popular restaurants – which are crowded in the summer season – can be visited spontaneously often even without prior reservation. What I particularly liked: most of the high-quality wellness hotels, located directly on the Baltic Sea, offer attractive prices at the beginning of the year. And without a doubt, a visit to the sauna is much more enjoyable in winter than in summer – sometimes even with a view of the icy sea!

In short: Usedom in winter is ideal for a long weekend or a short break.

The best wellness hotels in Usedom

We tested five different wellness hotels in Usedom – here is my personal rating:

Seetelhotel Ahlbecker Hof

General: The historic 5-star grand hotel (built in 1890) is located in Ahlbeck directly on the historic pier and captivates with its classic charm. The interior is very cozy and high-quality. My personal highlight is the fireplace room next to the lobby – coffee and cake by the fireplace. Simply wonderful!

Rooms: ☆ (4/5)

Historic ambience with chandeliers and cosy seating area, often with sea views. Perfect for lovers of classic hotels, but may seem a little old-fashioned to others.

Wellness & spa: ☆ (4/5)

The hotel has a large indoor pool and a versatile sauna area. High-quality treatments are offered in the Thai-inspired wellness area – the facial massage was particularly relaxing.

Breakfast & restaurants: (5/5)

There are four restaurants in total. The breakfast buffet is extremely varied, with an à la carte selection available until 12 noon – ideal for leisurely winter brunches. My highlight was the Thai restaurant Suan Thai – authentic cuisine, great design and excellent service.

Ideal for: couples, lovers of tradition

Double room price: from approx. 120,- EUR including breakfast

Strandhotel Ostseeblick

General: This quietly located hotel is in Heringsdorf, with a direct view of the beach. The Heringsdorf pier is within easy walking distance.

Rooms: (5/5)

Modern and very cosy at the same time. We stayed in the Panorama Master Suite – light-flooded, high-quality, with a wide view of the Baltic Sea. Definitely a wow room!

Wellness & spa: ☆ (4/5)

The multi-award-winning spa area is modern but rather compact. It has a panoramic indoor pool (unfortunately, this was under renovation during our stay).

Breakfast & Restaurants: ☆½ (4.5/5)

Very good breakfast buffet. Stylish hotel bar with a focus on cocktails and wines. The restaurant offers creative reinterpretations of regional cuisine, with a changing daily menu.

Ideal for: couples, connoisseurs

Double room price: from approx. 150,- EUR including breakfast

Steigenberger Grandhotel & Spa Heringsdorf

General: This modern hotel is located directly on the promenade. Despite its size, it offers a pleasant solution: it comprises several smaller buildings instead of one huge structure, which fits in very well architecturally with the imperial spas.

Rooms: ☆ (4/5)

Friendly rooms with a nautical and beach theme, many with balconies.

Wellness & spa: (5/5)

The wellness area is the largest of the five hotels at approx. 1,900 m² and is spread over two floors. It includes a heated outdoor pool for lap swimming, even in winter. There is also an indoor pool with massage functions, large saunas including a separate ladies’ sauna, and bright treatment rooms offering an extensive range of treatments. Plus: the spa area offers separate times for families with children.

Breakfast & restaurants: ☆ (4/5)

Large breakfast buffet, two restaurants, lounge bar with fireplace and a private spa lounge with light cuisine.

Ideal for: families, couples, groups of friends

Double room price: from approx. 150,- EUR including breakfast (this price is only valid for H Rewards members, but membership is free)

the breeze – Vela Hotels

General: This modern, trendy hotel is located in Ahlbeck, right on the beach promenade. Great: It is particularly dog-friendly, with a dog shop and dog wash. It also has a small café with a shop in the lobby.

Rooms: (5/5)

Studios and apartments with kitchens in a very modern design and plenty of space, some with their own sauna.

Wellness & spa: ☆ (4/5)

You can expect a large indoor pool, a separate children’s pool and a modern sauna area. Highlight: the sauna has a fireplace – absolutely brilliant! The wellness area is quite busy in the afternoons at weekends, but much more relaxed in the mornings.

Breakfast & restaurants: (5/5)

Excellent breakfast buffet with an extremely wide selection, including options for allergy sufferers and those with special dietary requirements. My absolute recommendation is the BRACA restaurant in the evening: Nordic-Mediterranean cuisine with creative combinations. The hotel also has a beautiful outdoor area, with fire pits and radiant heaters in winter.

Ideal for: Families & friends travelling together, travellers with dogs

Double room price: from approx. 140,- EUR including breakfast

Strandhotel Heringsdorf

General: This family-run hotel is located directly on the promenade. Special feature: It has a large, healing saltwater pool – unique on Usedom!

Rooms: ☆ (4/5)

Cosy rooms, many with bathtubs and views. However, the furnishings are somewhat inconsistent, but that is a matter of taste.

Wellness & Spa: (5/5)

I liked the Sindbad thermal baths with their Roman bath character, saunas, indoor pool and treatment rooms. There is also a rooftop wellness area with a panoramic sauna and outdoor jacuzzi with a view of the Baltic Sea (unfortunately, the jacuzzi was closed during our visit). The large heated outdoor pool contains healing salt water and can also be used in winter.

Breakfast & restaurants: ☆ (4/5)

Large breakfast buffet and cosy restaurant with classic cuisine.

Ideal for: Wellness lovers, couples looking for peace and quiet

Usedom is not just about beaches! The hinterland also offers plenty of space for activities and boasts incredibly beautiful and diverse nature. The south of the island in particular is characterised by small bays and hidden lakes.

In Usedom’s winters, which are less inviting for swimming and sunbathing, you can still explore the most beautiful sides and secret corners of the island, preferably on an island safari. The approximately five-hour trip is led by a guide and is peppered with interesting information. Our guide shared her extensive knowledge of the flora and fauna as well as the island itself with us. We were surprised at how many animals we were able to observe during our trip, even in the middle of winter. Among them were birds of prey, deer, foxes and beavers.

Of course, a safari also includes a hearty picnic. We enjoyed all kinds of hearty treats, hot soup, mulled wine and tea by a frozen lake. What a peaceful idyll!

Walk through the ‘Kaiserbäder’

As already mentioned, the imperial family used to enjoy spending the summer months here. The nobility also favoured the island, which gradually led to the development of its characteristic spa architecture. The most popular seaside resorts were Bansin, Ahlbeck and Heringsdorf – now known as the ‘Kaiserbäder’ (imperial spas). They definitely belong on the list of Usedom’s most beautiful sights.

A well-developed beach promenade connects the three imperial spas and even leads to Świnoujście in Poland. At 12 kilometres, it is the longest beach promenade in Europe. Its image is characterised by beautiful houses and villas as well as the typical piers. Just let yourself drift and be enchanted by the impressive architecture.

Tip: If you want something a little more exciting, I recommend the Kaiserbäder-Erlebnispfad app. Blue signs along the way offer in-depth content and QR codes for digital experiences – a kind of individual, self-guided discovery tour.

Treetop walk

The Usedom treetop walk leads up to 23 metres above the tops of beech and pine trees. An impressive experience in itself, it offers a special highlight: a fantastic panoramic view of the imperial spas and the Baltic Sea. Absolutely fantastic! Even in winter, a walk high up among the trees is very appealing. Beautifully designed with illuminated animal figures from the forest, the treetop walk on Usedom is definitely one of the most recommended sights.

Marc O’Polo Strandcasino

This historic building is not a casino, but was formerly a venue for concerts and entertainment. The Marc O’Polo Strandcasino is a very popular meeting place, and not just in winter on Usedom. It is located on the Heringsdorf beach promenade and now houses a concept store with a clothing shop on the ground floor and two adjoining restaurants on the upper floor: the Michelin-starred restaurant The O’Room with only a few seats and the cosy O’ne with super delicious dishes and snacks. Even at the latter, the dishes on offer are incredibly high quality and special – but at normal, affordable prices!

A must-try on Usedom, whether for shopping or dining – preferably both :).

Cycling on Usedom

If you are one of the hardy types, you might consider exploring the beauty of Usedom by bike in winter. This is of course possible and has its own special charm. The island is ideal for cycling tours, as it has a network of well-developed cycle paths covering around 200 kilometres.

You don’t even need to bring your own bike, as there are numerous rental stations. Please note: opening hours may be reduced in winter. It is best to enquire by telephone.

Winter beach festival in Ahlbeck

One of the highlights of winter on Usedom is the annual beach festival. It takes place in January on Ahlbeck beach. The programme includes the beach chair world championships and, of course, ice bathing. We were there to cheer on the brave ice bathers. It’s incredible how naturally the daredevils jump into the ice-cold sea – as if it were nothing. Since this year the Baltic Sea was covered with a layer of ice within a few days, a large hole had to be dug in the ice beforehand. In the evening, there was a spectacular fire show. It’s a special experience that you shouldn’t miss if you’re on Usedom in January.

Winter break on Usedom – my summary

I have to admit: our trip to Usedom in winter was a dream come true. The breathtaking view of the frozen sea and the overwhelming walks on the beach at sunrise alone were worth the trip. Never in my life have I seen the Baltic Sea like this – so enchantingly beautiful! Enriched by stays in top wellness hotels, where we could then thaw out in the cosy warmth of a sauna or by the fireplace, we wanted for nothing.

I can therefore highly recommend this experience! I hope you find the right wellness hotel for you to make your time on the beautiful island of Usedom in winter as pleasant as possible.

Welcome to Guangzhou – one of the most important cities and a huge region in the Greater Bay Area in southern China.

It is a unique blend of tradition and modernity that makes this city so attractive. On the one hand, Guangzhou is an important location for production and trade with an impressive modern skyline. On the other hand, the region fascinated me with a deeply rooted culture that is reflected in the cityscape and in the lives of its people.

Guangzhou is an exciting mix of huge skyscrapers – most notably the Canton Tower, the second tallest building in Asia – markets, fascinating temples and, of course, world-famous cuisine: The Cantonese cuisine is one of the four major cuisines of China.

P.S. Something I only learned after checking with locals: Guangzhou is pronounced differently than I thought. The ‘zhou’ at the end is pronounced ‘jow’, which reminds me of the name ‘Joe‘, so the correct way to say it is ‘Guangjoe’

To explore the most important highlights and sights of Guangzhou, I recommend 2 full days.

For a relaxed exploration with excursions, you should plan for 3 days.

Are you a food lover or interested in Guangzhou’s impressive culture? Then 3-4 days make sense, because there is a lot of cuisine waiting for you here and there are numerous museums.

When is the best time to visit Guangzhou?

Guangzhou has a subtropical climate. Spring and autumn are therefore particularly good times to explore all of Guangzhou’s sights in a relaxed way, as they are mild and dry. Summers (June–August), on the other hand, are very hot and extremely humid. The frequent rain makes sightseeing less pleasant. Winters tend to be cool, but this provides good conditions for a city break as well.

Travel & entry requirements for Guangzhou

German citizens and citizens of many European countries are permitted to stay in Guangzhou for 15 or 30 days without a visa (depending on current regulations, as of 2024). Entry is straightforward, directly at the respective border building, with only short waiting times.

If you wish to enter by land, you can use the bridge between Macau and China. A bus or taxi transfer is available for this purpose. Of course, it is also possible to fly to Guangzhou. Guangzhou Baiyun Airport offers international connections with fast metro and rail links.

The most beautiful sights and experiences in Guangzhou

Light and Water Show at Canton Tower

At 604 metres (1,982 ft) high, Canton Tower is the second tallest building in Asia and the fifth tallest in the world. It is located directly above a shopping centre in Guangzhou’s business district and is one of the city’s top attractions. A special highlight and one of my best Guangzhou tips is the spectacular evening light and water show at Flower City Square. It offers a great view of Guangzhou’s illuminated skyline, with the Canton Tower in the background – a perfect spot for night photography.

The shows take place every evening, with times varying depending on the season (usually between 7:30 pm and 9:30 pm every 30 minutes).

Chen Clan Academy – a well-known attraction in Guangzhou

The historic Chen Clan Academy was founded in the late 19th century by the Chen Clan, one of the largest families in China during the Qing Dynasty. It was used to train the descendants of the Chen Clan for the imperial examinations. After the imperial examinations were abolished, it was used as a school, among other things. Today, the Chen Clan Academy houses a museum of folk art and is a popular cultural landmark in Guangzhou.

Its outstanding features include the ornate wood and brick carvings and ceramic sculptures on the roofs, which characterise this impressive traditional architecture. The Chen Clan Academy is a quiet retreat in the middle of the bustling city, perfect for taking impressive photos, and for me it is definitely one of the most beautiful sights in Guangzhou.

Shamian Island

Shamian Island is an artificial island dating back to the 19th century, which was built as a foreign concession area. The British and French were granted concession rights to this area after the Second Opium War in 1858. Today, it is a peaceful and picturesque place with buildings from the colonial era, characterised by European-style architecture.

On the wide, green boulevards, you will find many cute cafés and quiet squares – perfect for leisurely strolls and photo spots. Shamian Island is very popular for wedding shoots and definitely belongs on my list of Guangzhou tips.

Dim Sum Lunch – A Must-Do in Guangzhou

Guangzhou is the birthplace of dim sum. In case you’re not familiar with it, dim sum are small, delicious bites that are often eaten for brunch, lunch or as a snack. They are usually served in steamer baskets, but also as soups, fried dishes or dumplings, and are perfect for sharing. They reminded me of Spanish tapas. Locals love to meet up with friends and family for dim sum brunch at the weekend. It’s more about socialising than the food itself.

The selection of dim sum restaurants in Guangzhou is huge – from traditional to modern. I was also fascinated by the overwhelming variety, but especially by the sheer endless range of flavours. So don’t miss out on this Guangzhou tip! However, it is advisable to arrive early, as many restaurants fill up quickly.

Shopping in Yongqing Fang

Yongqing Fang is a historic, vibrant arts and creative district with renovated old houses – one of Guangzhou’s most popular attractions. It combines tradition and modernity in the form of beautiful boutique shops, arts and crafts stores, numerous cafés and restaurants. A special highlight for fans is the house of Bruce Lee’s where he used to live as a kid.

My favourite spot in Yongqing Fang is Blan Bunny’s Plant Kingdom – a chic tea house with an adjoining shop. Here you will find hundreds of different types of tea, all of which you can sample for free. As soon as you enter, you are greeted by a breathtaking aroma in a fairytale setting. And, of course, you’ll find every beautiful tea accessory you can imagine here. For me as a tea lover, it was an absolute highlight.

Museum of Modern Art (Guangdong Museum of Art)

The Guangdong Museum of Art is a large art museum with modern architecture, focusing on traditional Chinese painting. However, it also houses modern and international art. You will find a large selection of interesting exhibitions here. For art lovers, this is one of my special Guangzhou tips!

Admission is generally free, but this can vary between different exhibitions.

In the outside area of the museum, you have a fantastic view of the Canton Tower – one of my favourite photo spots in Guangzhou! You can also combine your visit to the Guangdong Museum of Art with a walk along the Pearl River.

Sunset Spot: Party Pier

The Party Pier is located directly on the Pearl River and is one of the most popular Guangzhou tips for night owls. This is where people meet in the evening to experience the liveliness of the city up close. There is a huge selection of restaurants, bars and clubs to choose from. Pure rooftop feeling!

Party Pier also offers the best view of the sunset, which you absolutely must see from here. And if you like things a little more romantic, I have an extra tip: book a Pearl River Cruise – an evening boat tour to admire the city’s illuminated skyline from the water.

Shawan Ancient Town –  a special attraction in Guangzhou

Shawan Ancient Town is located outside the city centre. It is an 800-year-old historic town south of Guangzhou. Known for its rich culture and traditional architecture, it is one of the most interesting sights in Guangzhou for many tourists. It is home to numerous traditional houses and small tea houses, which you can admire in the quiet alleys. A visit to Shawan Ancient Town is perfect for anyone who likes to explore historical places or is looking for special photo spots. Ideal for a half-day trip.

Other highlights in Guangzhou:

Canton Tower – If you decide to watch the evening light and water show, you can combine it with a trip up the Canton Tower to take in a magnificent view of the city. But even during the day, the view is simply breathtaking.

Opera House – This masterpiece of futuristic architecture, perfectly integrated into its location on the Pearl River, is a must-see. It definitely belongs on my list of the best Guangzhou tips.

Beijing Road – Beijing Road has a long history. Here you can marvel at the remains of streets from the Song Dynasty. You walk on glass panels and can view archaeological excavations below you.

Megacities like Guangzhou and Shenzhen have something magical about them. I was particularly fascinated by the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity that flows together here. It’s actually almost impossible to find the right words to describe my impressions. That’s why there’s only one way for you to experience it for yourself: set off on a journey into a futuristic world that is nevertheless deeply rooted in its culture and will fill you with wonder. The Forbidden City, Zijin Cheng, is located in the middle of modern Beijing. It looks like a large rectangular island made of huge red walls and shiny golden roofs, surrounded by a wide water moat. A visit in the Forbidden City will take you back to historic times, while its name exudes something mysterious.

However, it is difficult for tourists to get tickets and not so easy to find your way around, as all signs are mainly in Chinese. But in this post I will tell you exactly how to make your visit at the Forbidden City in Beijing an unforgettable experience.

Why is it called the ‘Forbidden City’?

The answer lies in its function. On the one hand, the Forbidden City served as the residence of the reigning emperor and his family in the royal palace and, on the other hand, of course, as the centre of power of the Chinese Empire – for over 500 years. Since its construction (between 1406 and 1420), the strictest secrecy of all proceedings taking place within it was a top priority. Only the emperor, his family, officials and servants were allowed to enter the Forbidden City. The city itself was divided hierarchically. The outer courtyard served political and representative purposes, while the inner courtyard was reserved for the emperor and his family.

After the abdication of the last of a total of 24 emperors in 1911, he continued to live in the Forbidden City until 1924, when it was finally opened to the public as the Palace Museum in 1925. The Forbidden City remains one of China’s most important tourist attractions and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

How much does it cost to visit the Forbidden City in Beijing?

Ticket prices for the Forbidden City vary depending on the season:

• 60 yuan during peak season (1 April to 31 October)
• 40 yuan during low season (1 November to 31 March)

Visitors under the age of 18 can visit the Forbidden CIty free of charge.

Some special areas require an additional ticket, such as the Treasure Palace. However, we skipped this area.

How do you book tickets for the Forbidden City?

(Spoiler: It’s complicated)

The question how to obtain tickets for the Forbidden City is like a big mystery! Tthe online ticket portal is only available in Chinese and is not suitable for tourists. Therefore, there is only one way to get tickets: buy them directly on site at the palace! But you have to come to the right ticket booth!

Important: You must bring your passport with you! Photos or copies are not accepted, as your passport number must be entered on your ticket.

I have marked the exact location of the ticket centre on my map. It is a little hidden in front of the security checkpoint at the entrance –  the ‘Gate of Heavenly Purity’.

My tip: When booking a private tour, your guide will also assist you with purchasing tickets, which will guarantee that you avoid any misunderstandings.

Is a guided tour of the Forbidden City worth it?

We were also unsure how and where to get tickets, as we found different information online. So we decided to book a private tour for our visit to the Forbidden City in Beijing. And we definitely did not regret it! As already mentioned, it is not that easy to find your way around the area. We also learned many interesting facts thanks to our guide and saw the best spots.

We booked our local guide via Get Your Guide – including transport, ticket purchase and a tour of the Forbidden City. A visit to Tian’anmen Square was also included. The approximately 40-hectare public square is located directly in front of the entrance gate.

Conclusion: It is really worth booking a guided tour to enjoy the Forbidden City in a relaxed & informative way!

When is the best time to visit the Forbidden City?

Around 80,000 people visit the Forbidden City in Beijing EVERY DAY. As you can imagine, there are huge queues waiting at the entrance gate early in the morning. Which is why arriving early isn’t a solution. My tip: it’s better to plan your visit in the afternoon. Last admission is at 4 pm (closing time is 5 pm). We arrived at the palace at around 3 pm and passed through the entrance gate at around 3:30 pm.

How much time should you plan for your visit at the Forbidden City in Beijing?

We began our visit to the Forbidden City with a walk around the palace (no ticket is required for this). Even from the outside, it looks imposing and impressive – with lots of great photo opportunities. Standing in front of it, you can really feel its historic past.

The outdoor area is actually a popular photo spot among locals, especially for pictures in traditional costumes. Around the moat, you’ll see people dressed in colorful outfits everywhere. You can rent these costumes almost anywhere – and even book a photographer with them!

Inside the Forbidden City, you basically make your way from the entrance to the exit in a straight flow. Along the way, you pass through different sections with various small palaces and halls – though many of them are quite similar. So you don’t need to stop at every single one. We spent about two hours exploring the whole site.

My highlights inside the Forbidden City:

The central inner area with the main palace – the ‘Palace of Heavenly Purity’ – is particularly well known. It once served as the main residence of the reigning emperor and as the seat of government.

The Imperial Garden was my favourite – with various pagodas and small temples as well as shady trees – some of which are already 400 years old! What a special feeling to be so close to them…

Extra tip: Visit the Jingshan Park for the ultimate view

Jingshan Park (translated as Viewing Hill) was formerly part of the Forbidden City and is located opposite the exit – the ‘Gate of Divine Prowess’. It is a beautiful place for a walk. However, the main reason most visitors come to Jingshan Park is for the fantastic panoramic view of the Forbidden City and Beijing from the pavilion at the top of the hill. During sunset it is an particular unforgettable experience. Although the park is often very crowded, it is not to be missed. The climb is relatively steep but not very long. It took us about 10 minutes to the top.

Important: There is a small entrance fee. Again, it is not easy for tourists to buy tickets on site and they must be booked in advance. Which is why we booked them via Get Your Guide and got a QR code. This got exchanged for a ticket at the entrance. A passport is also required for your visit!

A visit to the Forbidden City in Beijing – My summary

Anyone who decides to travel to Beijing will naturally want to see the Forbidden City. It is surely the most famous sight in Beijing and an overwhelming feeling to enter the centre of power of the former Chinese Empire and immerse yourself in its exciting history. We thoroughly enjoyed our unforgettable stay here, even though getting tickets was a little more complicated than at other places we have visited so far.

How many days should you plan for a trip to Shenzhen?

I recommend 2 to 3 days to get a good impression of Shenzhen and visit the best sights. Planning three full days is advantageous if you are interested in detailed explorations and excursions to the surrounding area.

When is the best time to visit Shenzhen?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) are ideal. During these months, the weather is pleasantly mild and there is little rain. In summer (June to August), on the other hand, it is often very hot and humid – less than ideal for sightseeing. In winter (December to February), the weather is cooler, with temperatures reaching up to 11 degrees Celsius, but it is still pleasant for a city break.

My tips for travelling to and entering Shenzhen

Since 2024, China has allowed a 30-day visa-free regime for the United Kingdom and other European countries. Entry into Shenzhen is quick and smooth.

Shenzhen is very close to the border with Hong Kong – you can easily cross it by bus or car. Border control even takes place directly in your vehicle if you are travelling by car. Shenzhen also has an international airport with excellent rail and metro connections, ensuring flexible travel.

The most beautiful sights in Shenzhen

1. OCT Harbour

OCT Harbour in Shenzhen’s business district is a huge shopping and entertainment centre and is definitely one of Shenzhen’s must-see attractions. Located directly on the coastline of Qianhai Bay, you’ll be treated to fantastic views of the skyline as you stroll along the walkway. The complex includes a large shopping centre – the semi-open OH Bay Mall – with many shops, restaurants and activities. We particularly recommend a visit to the Zhongshu Bookstore with its spiral-shaped shelves. The beautifully arranged design is perfect for taking special photos.

The complex also features an impressive artificial lake and canals. The main attractions include a daily water and light show, the Dream Aquarium and a large Ferris wheel from which you can enjoy a fabulous view of the city and the sea. OCT Harbour is a perfect place to take a break between sightseeing stops, especially in the evening hours. It is also a good introduction to the modern side of Shenzhen.

2. Futian – Futuristic Light Show

The light show in Shenzhen’s Futian District is a gigantic event in which all of the city’s skyscrapers, equipped with millions of LED lights, shine in a synchronised show, providing every visitor with a unique visual experience. All the tall buildings seem to be immersed in the same sea of lights – simply breathtaking. I felt like I was on a journey into the future – a Shenzhen tip you shouldn’t miss.

The show lasts about 15 minutes, so take enough time to enjoy it at your leisure. You won’t regret it. My tip: the best view is from the street in front of the bar ‘Riad by the Theatre’, which is located next to a large shopping centre.

When does the light show take place? Only on Fridays, weekends and public holidays, hourly from 7 p.m. (November to March) or 7.30 p.m. (April to October).

3. Museum of Contemporary Art & Planning University (MOCAUP)

The MOCAUP is located in the heart of the Futian Cultural District and is actually a combination of two museums. Opened in 2016, it is considered a landmark of the city’s modern identity and is, of course, one of Shenzhen’s top attractions. I was fascinated by the futuristic combination of urban and architectural planning and contemporary art. Highly recommended for people interested in architecture and design!

4. Talent Park – drone delivery

Talent Park in Shenzhen is both a technology-focused district and a popular recreational area for visitors and locals alike. It is a mixture of parkland with paths and a lake, as well as modern elements such as art installations and new technological achievements. Large play areas for children are also integrated. Known for its beautiful landscaping, Talent Park is definitely one of the best sights in Shenzhen in my opinion. It’s the perfect stopover if you want to explore Shenzhen’s high-tech side and relax in green surroundings at the same time.

5. OCT Loft Creative Culture Park

The former industrial district has been transformed into a popular cultural and artistic centre and is now green and hip. Here you will find street art, small shops, vintage stores and unique cafés. Be enchanted by the flair of this district and relax amid green avenues and renovated buildings. The OCT Loft Creative Culture Park is ideal for spending half a day or a whole afternoon strolling and exploring, and is of course one of my Shenzhen tips for you.

6. My insider tip for Shenzhen: Gankeng Ancient Town

Gankeng Ancient Town is a historic site with restored buildings in the old Chinese style. It was developed from a 350-year-old village of Hakka culture. It offers a mixture of traditional architecture and modern entertainment. Here you will find, among other things, authentic houses, tea houses and bookshops.

A special highlight: you can even borrow and wear traditional Chinese clothing from different dynasties – with matching styling, of course. I really wanted to try this out and chose a costume from the Song Dynasty (960–1279). It was a great feeling to see myself like this and stroll around this fairytale place. Gankeng Ancient Town impressed me greatly and was one of my top sights in Shenzhen from the very first moment. Don’t miss out on this journey back in time.

Where is Gankeng Ancient Town? Just outside Shenzhen – accessible by metro line 10 (Gankeng station) or by taxi/Didi (Chinese Uber). The journey takes between 30 and 45 minutes.

7. Restaurant highlight: Chan’an Pavilion

Trying hot pot is an absolute must when visiting China. I thought it must be particularly good here at Chan’an Pavilion because when we arrived, we were greeted by a huge queue of people who had the same idea as us. But it was worth the wait! Chan’an Pavilion is actually one of the hottest hot pot restaurants in Shenzhen and, for me, one of the best sights. From the outside, it looks rather inconspicuous, but as soon as you enter, you are captivated by its enchanting ambience. Hundreds of lanterns glow in various shades from white to red, giving the beautiful building a cosy atmosphere. Its unique architectural design extends over several floors.

So, how was my first hot pot experience? Several people sit at a round table with numerous small bowls containing different fresh ingredients. You order a hot broth of your choice. Using small ladles or skewers, you can now cook the fresh ingredients in your broth – like a kind of fondue. Absolutely delicious! The locals love to meet up with their family or friends to enjoy this.

Another restaurant tip:

If you would like to eat vegan, then I recommend the signature restaurant Qing Chun Pumen (in MixC World). It is a completely vegan restaurant and you can enjoy the signature dish Black Truffle Fried Rice, among other things. Of course, there is also a large selection of other vegan dishes. A must-try! However, it is advisable to book in advance.

The Macao Peninsula is located approximately 70 km from Hong Kong and is a special administrative region of China – with its own legal system, currency (pataca) and even its own passport. Until 1999, it was a Portuguese colony for almost 450 years, which can still be seen today in its architecture, cuisine and lifestyle. The mix of Chinese culture and Portuguese heritage makes Macao a unique destination in Asia – often described as ‘Europe meets China’.

Macao is also known as the ‘Las Vegas of Asia’. Did you know that there are around 30 casinos here, which generate more revenue than the 100+ casinos in Las Vegas? But we were more interested in the Macao’s impressive flair and its hidden gems. This also included an extra large dose of adrenaline – but more on that later.

In this post, I will share with you to the most beautiful sights and highlights of Macao to inspire you to take a trip to the city of contrasts. As always, you will find a map below where I have marked all the spots for you.

When is the best time to visit Macao?

To really enjoy Macao’s many impressive sights, I recommend visiting between October and December. During these months, the weather is pleasantly mild, dry and sunny. Spring (March to May) is also beautiful and therefore a good time to visit, but it can be a little more humid. Summer (June to September) is hot, humid and can be affected by typhoons, which is why travelling to Macao at this time is less recommended.

How many days should you plan for your trip to Macao?

In my opinion, two to three days are enough to explore Macao’s main sights, the historic centre, the modern casinos and quieter places like Coloane at your leisure.

If you enjoy photography or want to experience the city at a slower pace, it is better to plan for three full days.

What is the best way to get to Macao?

Macao has its own international airport, but there are no direct flights from the United Kingdom or other European Countries. Most flights land in Hong Kong, from where you can reach Macao by ferry (the journey takes about an hour). Since 2018, there has also been the 55-kilometre-long Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge which makes the connection by car or bus super easy.

Historic Centre of Macao

The Ruins of St. Paul’s

The Historic Centre of Macao forms the heart of the city and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Ruins of St. Paul’s, the remains of a 17th-century church, is probably the most famous landmark in Macao and one of its top sights. The church was built between 1602 and 1640. In 1835, a major fire broke out, destroying everything except the front wall and facade. The ruins were finally restored at the end of the last century and still stand today

Monte do Forte Fortress

Another highlight of Macao is the historic Monte do Forte Fortress (Fortaleza do Monte), also built in the 17th century. From here, you can enjoy one of the best views of the city, the ruins of St. Paul’s and the iconic Lisboa Casino. Access is via stairs or, if you prefer a more comfortable option, via the escalator at the Macao Museum, which leads directly to the fortress. My tip: it is particularly beautiful up here at sunset. Admission is free, by the way. Please note: the escalator closes at 6 pm, after which you can only go up and down on foot.

Photogenic streets with European flair

The narrow streets surrounding Macao’s historic centre captivate visitors with their fascinating Portuguese-Chinese architecture and are perfect for strolling and taking photos. I found Calçada de São Francisco Xavier particularly photogenic, with its beautiful European-style houses and picturesque view of St. Paul’s Ruins. The street is a very popular photo spot in Macao.

The modern part of Macao – Cotai Strip

The Cotai Strip in Macao –  a sight that attracts millions of people every year – is actually inspired by Las Vegas. The long, wide boulevard is located in the new, glamorous part of the city, lined with gigantic casino resorts and themed hotels.

The most famous casinos include:

• Studio City
• The Parisian (with its own Eiffel Tower)
• The Londoner
• The Venetian Macao

Even if you don’t like to indulge in casino games, it’s worth spending an evening here. You can expect fantastic night scenes, shows, great restaurants and, of course, plenty of shopping opportunities.

Macao Tower

At a height of 338 metres (1,109 ft), the Macao Tower towers over the city skyline as another Macao landmark and attraction. From the platform, you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the city. If you’re feeling brave, you can also venture out onto the outer ring and walk around the tower. There is no railing, but you will be secured with safety harnesses for the so-called Sky Walk.

If that’s still not enough adrenaline for you, then I recommend trying a bungee jump from the tower, as I did. It’s the highest bungee jumping facility in the world! A 200-metre free fall is no small feat. I would be lying if I said it was one of my easiest exercises. Just before the jump, my knees were really shaking and I wondered what I had gotten myself into. But there was no turning back for me… And what followed was simply amazing!

My conclusion: the Macao Tower is ideal for adventure seekers or for taking impressive panoramic photos at sunset.

Coloane Village

Coloane Village is located in the south of Macao and is a charming, quiet village with European architecture, small churches and narrow streets – ideal for a relaxing stroll away from the hustle and bustle. For me, it is definitely one of the most beautiful sights in Macao. The contrast between traditional Coloane and the view of the modern skyline of mainland China on the other side of the bay is particularly charming and very impressive.

Don’t miss: the famous egg tarts at Lord Stow’s Bakery – inspired by the Portuguese pastéis de nata but with a slightly different recipe. They are considered the best in Macao.

My insider tips in Macao

Hac Sa Long Chao Kok Trail

This is a coastal hiking trail that leads along a footbridge over red rocks. Walking on it was a very special experience, with the huge, bright red stones next to and below me, almost like in a fairy tale. The landscape reminded me a little of the Seychelles.

The Hac Sa Chao Kok Trail is ideal for nature lovers and relaxation, as it is very quiet here. We only encountered two local fishermen and were able to really enjoy our walk – making it a real insider tip in Macao.

A-Ma Temple

The Taoist A-Ma Temple – my top insider tip for Macao – is located in the south of the city and is one of Macao’s oldest temples, built in 1488 during the Ming Dynasty. It is dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu (A-Ma). The temple is built on several levels on a rock and reminded me of an enchanted place out of a fairy tale.

Fun fact: A-Ma Temple is said to be the namesake of the city. According to legend, the name ‘Macao’ has the following origin: Portuguese sailors asked locals what the place they had arrived at was called and received the answer ‘A-Ma-Gau’ (‘Bay of A-Ma’). This later became ‘Macao’.

If you like, you can take a glimpse into the future while visiting the temple with the Kau Chim ceremony – a traditional method of divination in temples that is very popular with the locals.

Taipa Houses Museum

The historic villas of the Taipa Houses Museum are located on a large water lily pond with a wooden walkway. There are five houses from the 20th century that reflect the life of the Portuguese elite at that time. You will also find exhibitions on local history and culture here.

My insider tip is to take a walk on the wooden footbridge that crosses the pond, offering a photogenic view of Macao’s modern skyline with the casinos in the background. The Taipa Houses Museum is also a quiet place to enjoy and relax.

On the one hand, it is the mixture of different cultural influences that impressed me, and on the other hand, the dense encounter, almost fusion, of history and modernity. In Macao, it is possible to immerse yourself in the hustle and bustle of a cosmopolitan city and then escape it in the next moment to find peace and quiet in a temple or in nature. Both had their own special, irresistible charm.

When is the best time to visit Naxos Island?

The best time to visit Naxos Island is between spring and autumn. In May, June, September and October, the weather is usually pleasantly warm – ideal for swimming, hiking or excursions. In July and August, however, it can get very hot, and the island is more crowded during the holiday season. Therefore, it is better to avoid these two months.

How many days are ideal for exploring the island of Naxos?

I recommend planning at least five days to experience a good mix of sightseeing, beach time and nature. This leaves enough time to discover both the old town of Naxos and the traditional villages in the interior of the island. In between, you can relax on the long beaches or go on short hikes. If you want to take it easy or discover even more insider tips on Naxos, it’s best to stay a little longer.

How do you get to the island of Naxos?

The easiest way to get to Naxos is by domestic flight from Athens – the flight time is only about 40 minutes. If you are planning to go island hopping, you can also easily reach Naxos by ferry, for example from Paros, Santorini or Mykonos. The connection to the neighbouring island of Paros is particularly suitable for a day trip. Ferries run regularly and are a relaxed way to travel through the Cyclades.

What is the best way to get around the island of Naxos?

You should definitely book a small rental car. This will give you the flexibility to easily reach remote beaches, villages and all of Naxos’ hidden gems. The roads are well developed, and with a car you can discover the island at your own pace. Public buses run regularly, but are less convenient if you want to travel independently.

Temples

Temple of Demeter

The Temple of Demeter was built over 2,500 years ago in honour of the goddess of fertility and harvest. It was intended to ensure that the surrounding fields remained fertile – a central concern for agriculture at the time. The building material is particularly impressive: the finest marble from Naxos, for which the island is still famous today. In the past, it was used to make the roof tiles for the ancient Olympia Temple and the Acropolis in Athens. The Temple of Demeter is idyllically situated in the middle of the countryside. You can easily combine your visit with a short hike or a trip to the interior of the island.

Portara of the Temple of Apollo

The Portara of the Temple of Apollo is one of the most famous landmarks of Naxos – and yet a real insider tip if you want to experience the sunset in a special way. It stands on a small offshore island directly in front of the port city and capital of Naxos – called Naxos town – and can be reached on foot via a narrow path in the sea.

The Temple of Apollo was never completed and all that remains today is the imposing marble gate, over 2,500 years old, through the centre of which the sun sets spectacularly in the evening. This makes the Portara a very popular spot in the evening. Many locals and tourists bring wine or a cold beer with them to enjoy the spectacle in a relaxed atmosphere. Afterwards, it’s worth having dinner on the promenade in the town of Naxos – within walking distance and with a view of the sea and a large selection of restaurants.

Places worth seeing on the island of Naxos

Chalki

Chalki – for me, probably the cutest village in the centre of the island of Naxos – offers a nice contrast to the hustle and bustle of the coast. In the small alleys, you will find lovingly run cafés, cute restaurants and shops selling local products and handicrafts. The village invites you to stroll, linger and enjoy – without any hustle and bustle. Chalki is perfect for a relaxing day trip to the interior of the island.

Filoti

Filoti is a charming mountain village on Naxos and slightly larger than neighbouring Chalki – also perfect for a relaxing trip away from the beaches. Here you can shop for souvenirs, stroll through the shady alleys or take a break in one of the cafés. The walk from the Old Cinema café to the Eglise de la Vierge de Filoti church is particularly charming: a photogenic alleyway with small shops, traditional houses and typical Cycladic flair. I could spend the whole day strolling along here. Filoti is an insider tip on Naxos for anyone who wants to discover authentic island life.

Nature on the island of Naxos

The nature on Naxos is surprisingly diverse and a real highlight of the island. Unlike many other Cycladic islands, which tend to be barren and dry, Naxos is characterised by mountains, green valleys and lush vegetation. Between olive groves, shady hiking trails and small springs, you can discover the unspoilt landscape and enjoy magnificent views. This special combination of sea, mountains and Mediterranean nature makes Naxos unique.

The mountains around Filoti not only offer great hiking trails, but also viewpoints that you can easily reach by car – another insider tip on Naxos. We were particularly impressed by the picturesque view of the small white church of Agia Marina, which we discovered on the way to the Fotodotis monastery. There are more than 500 such typical white churches scattered across the island – many of them hidden in the mountainous landscape, making every excursion something special. For a population of only around 19,000, this is an astonishing number and shows how deeply rooted faith and tradition are on Naxos.

The beaches of Naxos Island

The beaches on Naxos are among the most beautiful in Greece – spacious, with fine sand and often turquoise blue water. Especially on the west coast, one dream beach follows another. Despite their beauty, most beaches are never overcrowded – ideal for swimming, sunbathing and unwinding. If you prefer something more active, some spots also offer good conditions for windsurfing or kitesurfing.

Hawaii Beach

Hawaii Beach on Naxos lives up to its name and is an insider tip for anyone looking for a secluded bay with turquoise blue water and fine sand. It is somewhat hidden and can only be reached via a short but partly slippery footpath – but you will be rewarded with an almost deserted backdrop. The waves are ideal for swimming, but this makes the beach less suitable for small children. As there are no shops or snack bars in the area, you should bring enough food with you, but believe me, it’s worth it!

Mikri Vigla Beach

Mikri Vigla Beach on the island of Naxos is ideal for families and anyone who wants to enjoy a relaxing day at the beach. The expansive sandy beach offers shallow access to the water, hardly any waves and plenty of space to play and relax. It is easily accessible by car, and you are only a few steps away from the sea. At the beginning of the beach, there is a restaurant, a small shop and the option to rent sun loungers and parasols. If you prefer a quieter spot, simply walk a little further – it gets much less crowded there.

Sunset dinner at Restaurant Rotonda

Restaurant Rotonda is picturesquely located in the mountains of Naxos and offers breathtaking views – the atmosphere here is especially unique at sunset. From the terrace, you can see not only the island itself, but also some of the surrounding Cycladic islands. In addition to the view, the cuisine also impresses with delicious dishes and a fine selection of wines, all at fair prices. A real highlight for a special dinner on the island. Important: Be sure to reserve in advance and ask specifically for a table with a direct view.

Routsouna Waterfall

A hidden oasis in the heart of the island of Naxos is the Routsouna Waterfall near the village of Keramoti – something you would not expect to find on a Cycladic island. After a short, idyllic hike through the green landscape, you will reach a small, hidden waterfall in the middle of the quiet interior of Naxos. Especially in summer, it offers a refreshing change from the beach and sea. You will hardly meet anyone else along the way – perfect if you want to experience Naxos off the beaten track. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to see this magical waterfall ourselves, but it’s definitely on our must-do list for our next visit.

I am always fascinated by how many wonderful places there are on our planet. The dreamlike island of Naxos enchanted me from the very first moment – with its natural beauty, rich history and the warm hospitality of its people. I was particularly impressed by the varied landscape with its green mountains, small villages and sun-drenched beaches. Naxos remains a very special place for me – one that I definitely want to return to.

The Great Wall of China is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It is a symbol of China’s millennia-old history and winds its way through mountains, valleys and deserts. Its numerous sections were once built to protect the empire from invaders. Even today, the Great Wall of China is one of the most famous sights in the world and attracts millions of visitors every year. So it’s no wonder that the most popular sections are often crowded. But imagine if you could experience the Great Wall of China all to yourself, without getting up for sunrise…

In this post, I’ll tell you my absolute insider tip how to discover the Great Wall of China in the most unforgettable way. Experiencing this monument without the tourist crowds is an overwhelming feeling that cannot be put into words.

Why was the Great Wall of China built?

Construction of the Great Wall of China originally began to protect the empire from attacks and raids by nomadic peoples from the north, especially the Mongols. The first sections were built as early as the 7th century BC. Under Emperor Qin Shi Huang, in the 3rd century BC, construction became more and more standardized. However, the Great Wall of China did not only have a military function. It also served to control trade routes such as the Silk Road, for communication and, of course, to demonstrate the power of the empire.

How long is the Great Wall of China?

It may be a myth that the Great Wall of China is so huge that it can be seen from space, but its length is still unbelievable! If you add up all the preserved and reconstructable sections, you get a total length of no less than 21,000 kilometres / 13,000 miles. It would take about a year and a half to walk this distance on foot! Even though not all parts are in such good condition that you can actually walk on them, there are some well-preserved sections with various access points. And that’s exactly where the difference lies!

You should avoid this section of the Great Wall of China:

Tourists usually book their tours to the Great Wall from Beijing. The major tour operators mostly go to Badaling – the most famous access point.

+ Advantage: This section is only an hour (about 70 km) away from Beijing by car or bus and is easily accessible by express train. You can basically step off the bus and onto the wall, so there’s not much walking involved. In addition, this section has been completely restored and is easy to walk on.

– Disadvantage: No matter what time of day, the Great Wall at Badaling is always crowded! One tourist group follows another. There are also strict opening hours between 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., making it almost impossible to relax and enjoy the sunrise or sunset. Drone photography is also not permitted.

My insider tip: Here you have the Great Wall of China all to yourself

After some research, we came across Jinshanling. A section of the Great Wall of China that turned out to be a real insider tip.

+ Advantage: Here, the wall winds its way through a picturesque, mountainous landscape as far as the eye can see. A fantastic backdrop for photos! Jinshanling is only partially restored and has therefore remained wonderfully authentic. And best of all, you’ll encounter significantly fewer or no other visitors here. Although there are opening hours at the ticket office, no one checks when you leave the wall. This allowed us to enjoy the sunset in peace and then stroll back to the exit at our leisure.

– The Only Down part: Jinshanling is located about 150 km / 93 miles from Beijing and is difficult to reach by public transport.

– My Tip: We therefore booked a private driver and it took us just under 2 hours from the city centre in Beijing.

As we wanted to see the sunset, we didn’t leave Beijing until around midday. The driver not only knew his way around very well, but also waited for us at the entrance to the Great Wall until we returned to drive us back. From the entrance, you hike uphill for about 20 minutes, but the path is paved and easy to find. You can expect restored as well as original passages with some stony steps and paths. Sturdy footwear is therefore important!

Don’t miss out on this experience: standing all alone at sunset on this epic monument, with no other soul in sight, feels like stepping into an adventure movie.

Another tip: it’s worth booking an accommodation in Jinshanling and spending a night right by the wall. (You can find my hotel tips below.)

The perfect route on the Great Wall of China in Jinshanling

There are also several entrances to the Great Wall in Jinshanling. After the ticket office, follow the main path to a fork, where it is best to keep to the right. Once you reach the wall, you can walk in either direction. You will pass various watchtowers with windows and great views. We started at Brick Crenel and walked west to Six-Window Tower. From here, you have a spectacular view of the untouched part of this section of the Great Wall, which is covered in dense greenery. We then walked back, past Brick Crenel again, and hiked about 8-10 towers further east until dusk set in. For our return journey, we chose the second access point to the wall from Shalingkou Tower.

Can you buy food and drinks at the Great Wall of China in Jinshanling?

Yes and no. There are a few small shops and even a restaurant on the main path, but everything was closed when we visited. I suspect this was because we were in Jinshanling on a Monday – the shops probably open more on weekends or public holidays? However, some locals had set up small stalls in the towers where they sold souvenirs, snacks and even cold drinks. And at fair prices! However, you shouldn’t rely on this. Be sure to pack enough water and maybe a few snacks – especially in summer.

When is the best time to visit the Great Wall of China?

The spring and autumn months are ideal. The temperatures are pleasant and the nature is absolutely beautiful. Summers are very hot with intense sunshine. Winters, on the other hand, are very cold and there may even be snow in the mountainous regions. We visited the Great Wall of China in August. Sunscreen with a high SPF, a sun hat and sunglasses were therefore essential.

A visit to the Great Wall of China from Beijing –  without the tourist crowds! My summary

I had been looking forward to visiting the Great Wall of China for a long time, but what I experienced exceeded my expectations by far! Not only due to its imposing size, but mostly due to all the unforgettable moments we had! Standing alone on this epic monument, with a breathtaking view of the endless landscape, overwhelmed me. Jinshanling turned out to be an absolute insider tip.

The best time to travel to Croatia

Shielded by the mountains in the east, Croatia has one of the sunniest coasts in the entire Mediterranean, with dry, hot summer days and mild, rainy winters. The summer months are therefore the best time for a beach holiday. However, if you want to go on a voyage of discovery, I recommend the period from the end of May to June or September to October. You can also enjoy relaxing moments on the beach during this time, as the weather and the sea water are pleasantly warm. There are also fewer tourists and the prices for accommodation are cheaper than in the high season in summer.

Getting around & mobility on your trip to Croatia

If you are travelling to Croatia by plane, I recommend taking a hire car so that you can be flexible and plan your own discovery tour of the country.

If you have planned island hopping on your trip to Croatia (which I highly recommend!), ferries and boat tours are a good option (e.g. Split → Hvar).

It is also possible to use public transport, but you should be prepared for the fact that rural areas are only accessible to a limited extent.

Recommended travel duration for Croatia

10 to 14 days is ideal for a relaxed round trip through Croatia. Although it is possible to limit yourself to just one week, you should then focus on 2-3 destinations to really immerse yourself in the fascinating flair. Be sure to include islands and national parks in your itinerary. More on this later.

Take a relaxed stroll through the historic old town with its small alleyways and pretty cafés and let yourself be whisked away to a distant, bygone era. Afterwards, you can relax on the nearby beach. 3 – 4 days are ideal for exploring all the sights in Pula.

Pula highlight:

Pula’s most valuable jewel, and therefore THE top attraction, is the Roman amphitheatre from the 1st century – one of the best preserved in the world. It dominates the city skyline and is located directly by the sea. The amphitheatre is not only a historical monument, but also a place where concerts and events are still held today. A visit in the evening is particularly impressive, as the façade is beautifully illuminated.

My insider tip: Under Pula is an extensive underground city (Zerostrasse)  with tunnels and shelters. It dates back to the First World War and was built by the Austrians to protect their citizens. If you are interested in history, you should definitely plan a visit. You can take a lift up to the castle with a great panoramic view over Pula.

Brijuni Islands – nature, history & safari flair

The Brijuni archipelago stretches directly in front of Pula. The national park, which covers around 36 square kilometres, includes 14 beautiful islands surrounded by crystal-clear water that is perfect for swimming. You can explore the Brijuni Islands on a boat tour from Pula. A paradise of breathtaking nature awaits you. However, not all of the 14 islands in the Brijuni National Park can be visited.

Highlight: The main island of Veliki Brijun not only has hotel facilities, but also a large wildlife park. Exotic animals such as zebras, llamas and even elephants live here. This is thanks to former President Tito, who chose the Brijuni Islands as a retreat and received animals as gifts from statesmen from all over the world. These living gifts and their offspring found a new home on Veliki Brijun. You will also find some Roman ruins on the main island that are more than 2000 years old.

Insider tip: Go in search of traces of dinosaurs. Only about 100 years ago, 125 million-year-old dinosaur footprints were discovered on Veli Brijun, hidden under layers of rock and thus very well preserved.

Plitvice Lakes & the Plitvice Valley – The clearest water in Europe

With the Plitvice Lakes, nature has created a true masterpiece that is definitely one of Croatia’s natural highlights. 16 lakes, like steps of a staircase, flow into each other through thundering waterfalls. The Plitvice Lakes National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and enchants every visitor with its pristine beauty.

Wooden hiking trails lead through the park over the crystal-clear water, which shimmers in all colours from turquoise to deep blue, past the impressive waterfalls – a unique paradise for nature photographers.

The main attraction is the 78 metre high Veliki Slap (Great Waterfall). It is best to visit it early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds of tourists.

Take 3 – 4 days to enjoy the magic of the Plitvice Lakes and the Plitvice Valley – which has much more to offer than the nature park:

In the 3 – 5 million year old Baraceve Spilje caves, you can marvel at mighty stalactites and stalagmites as well as the remains of prehistoric animals and the remains of prehistoric man. You embark on a mysterious journey into the past. Researchers have found the skeletons of countless prehistoric animals here, such as a cave bear that lived here around 70,000 years ago. You can see it directly on site. Other artefacts and replicas, all of which were found in the caves, are on display in the new Speleon Museum.

If you like animals, I recommend visiting a horse ranch and going on an adventurous ride. We opted for the Wild Spring Ranch and were delighted by the friendliness and cheerfulness of the couple who run the ranch.

My insider tip: If you fancy a bit more adrenaline, I suggest a buggy tour to Zeljava Airbase. The former underground military airbase was built by Yugoslavia during the Cold War to withstand nuclear attacks. It is an almost eerie feeling to drive into the darkness of the tunnel. You can also race along the old runway in a buggy or explore an old aircraft wreck.

Omiš – adrenalin & the romance of the old town

The picturesque coastal town of Omiš is located at the mouth of the Cetina River in southern Croatia. Its dramatic backdrop of steep cliffs rising majestically from the sea is striking – perfect for outdoor activities and adventures.

Omiš itself captivates with its charming old town centre, right by the sea, as well as two fortresses (Mirabella and Starigrad). It is super romantic to stroll through the alleyways and enjoy the hustle and bustle of the pretty little town in the small cafés.

Highlights in Omiš:

Rafting on the Cetina River: The Cetina River meanders between the towering mountains and is perfect for rafting. Get ready for an adventurous river trip with plenty of spectacular moments.

Ziplining over gorges: The adventure continues, this time not on the Cetina River, but high above it. The Cetina Zipline with a total of 7 exciting and long ziplines is absolutely amazing.

Omiš truly offers an ideal combination of breathtaking activities and relaxation.

Split – antiquity meets harbour flair

As soon as you enter the beautiful city of Split, located on the Dalmatian coast, you will literally be taken in by the ancient walls that meet chilled Mediterranean vibes up close. Split is a crossroads between history and modernity and one of Croatia’s most spectacular sights. Around 1,700 years ago, the Roman Emperor Diocletian had a gigantic palace built here for his retirement, the ruins of which were later used to build the city. More than 200 buildings can still be found today between the white stone walls and under the inner courtyards – shops, hotels, pretty cafés and bars characterise the cityscape. Just let yourself be carried away by the special flair – this magical place is truly unique.

The highlights of Split:

Start your Split visit with a walk through the monumental Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The atmosphere is so epic, especially below the city. Incidentally, one of the many Game of Thrones filming locations in Croatia is located here. You absolutely have to see it.

Afterwards, stroll along the Riva, the elegant promenade where life flows peacefully between palm trees and Austro-Hungarian façades. Relax in one of the cosy cafés or restaurants and enjoy the scent of lavender and the sound of the sea.

My insider tip: The bell tower of the Cathedral of St. Domnius, originally the emperor’s mausoleum, offers fantastic views over the city and the Adriatic Sea.

Island hopping in Croatia – Hvar, Brač & the Pakleni Islands

Island hopping is an essential part of your trip to Croatia, because only then will you feel the paradisiacal magic of this country. I recommend a day or multi-day tour from Split.

Hvar

It is said that the sun-kissed island of Hvar is the most beautiful of the Croatian islands. It boasts a picturesque old town, beautiful beaches and fragrant lavender fields. From the lively harbour, you can explore Hvar through the cobbled streets. The pulsating heart is St. Stephen’s Square, dominated by the imposing Renaissance cathedral. Be sure to take a walk up to the Spanish fortress, which was built at the beginning of the 16th century. It offers fantastic views of the town below and the Pakleni Islands. Hvar is a favourite destination for visitors of all ages.

Brač

No less worth seeing is the charming island of Brač with the most famous beach in Croatia, Zlatni Rat (Golden Horn), which is particularly popular with windsurfers. Take a stroll through the cute harbour town of Milna, which is surrounded by picturesque bays. There are many cafés and restaurants on the palm-lined promenade, from whose terraces you have a great view over the bay.

Pakleni Islands

The Pakleni Islands are an absolute highlight when island hopping in Croatia. This archipelago, consisting of 14 islands, enchants with its picturesque bays, crystal-clear water, hidden beaches and snorkelling spots – a paradise for nature lovers and those seeking peace and quiet. Once you’ve witnessed one of the breathtaking sunsets, you’ll agree with me: The Pakleni Islands are a little Caribbean in Europe.

Why Croatia should be on your bucket list

Once again, I realised how many magical places there are on our planet that are just waiting to be discovered and appreciated. Croatia is definitely one of them. You simply have to experience Croatia for yourself! Every step reveals new, unique perspectives. The harmonious balance between nature and culture touched me just as much as the friendliness and warmth of the people who live here.

The popular island of Sardinia, located on the west coast of Italy, is not only the second largest in the country, but in the entire Mediterranean. Some even call Sardinia the Caribbean of the Mediterranean. No wonder, because its dreamy sandy beaches and turquoise waters are simply breathtakingly beautiful. The combination of dolce vita, diverse nature and idyllic bays truly makes Sardinia a top holiday destination.

A 7-day Road Trip is the perfect way to explore Sardinia. That’s why I’ve put together a one week Sardinia itinerary for you – with the best sights, tours, beaches and hidden gems. As always, you’ll find them all on a detailed map.

Sardinia Road Trip – a few important tips in advance:

• The best times to explore Sardinia by car are May – June and September – October. During this time, it is not as hot as in summer and there are significantly fewer tourists.
• A small car or SUV is best suited as a rental car to go around the island. Familiarise yourself with the park rules beforehand, as they can vary a lot between the north and south.
• You should book boat tours well in advance – especially for the Grotta di Nettuno, the Golfo di Orosei and La Maddalena.
• Don’t forget to take cash with you, as cards are often not accepted in smaller villages and remote areas.

My 7-Day Sardinia Road Trip Itinerary

Sardinia Day 1: Arrival in Cagliari & start of the trip

After landing at the international airport in Cagliari and picking up your hire car, you start your Sardinia road trip with your first breathtaking coastal drive towards Chia. The small village is located 48 kilometres south of Cagliari, nestled in a coastal area with beautiful beaches and crystal-clear water. The setting exudes true Caribbean flair. Between fine dunes full of fragrant greenery, you can relax wonderfully on the fine sandy beaches.

My Restaurant Tip:

For dinner, I recommend the Trattoria da Angelo in Domus de Maria. It is located just a few minutes from the Hilton Chia Laguna. Here you can enjoy authentic Sardinian specialities such as porceddu (suckling pig), fregola ai frutti di mare (roasted pasta with seafood) and seadas (honey dumplings with pecorino cheese).

My hotel tip: Hilton Chia Laguna Sardinia

The Hilton Chia Laguna impresses primarily with its fantastic pool and excellent spa area. There is also a shuttle service to the Spiaggia di Monte Cogoni – a picturesque sandy beach from where, with a bit of luck, you can even spot dolphins.

Sardinia Day 2: Along the Costa del Sud

The second day of my Sardinia itinerary takes you further along the panoramic coastal road along the Costa del Sud – with breathtaking views of beautiful bays and cliffs. I promise you won’t get enough of the idyllic sandy beaches that pass you by.

Stops you shouldn’t miss during your road trip:

• Tuerredda Beach – an absolute dream beach in Sardinia with shallow turquoise waters that are always calm. You really feel like you’re in the Caribbean here.
• Capo Spartivento – here you’ll find a lighthouse, which is one of the oldest still functioning on the island. From here you have a great view of the sea.
• Porto Pino – an atmospheric place with white, never-ending sand dunes and tranquil lagoons.

Your final stop for this day is Oristano. This historic, authentic Sardinian town is located on the west coast between picturesque, rocky bays and is perfect for your second overnight stay of your Sardinia itinerary. The province is not only surrounded by beaches, but also by the impressive mountains of Monte Ferru. And if you’re a night owl, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to get your money’s worth in Oristano.

Sardinia Day 3: Bosa – the colourful jewel of Sardinia

Today’s first destination on your Sardinia round trip is Bosa – one of the most beautiful small towns in Sardinia. Bosa may not be large (just under 8,000 inhabitants), but it is full of charm. You simply have to immerse yourself in this magical flair and let yourself be carried away by it. The historic town centre with its pretty alleyways, pastel-coloured houses and cute shops will cast a spell over you. It’s simply fun to stroll around here and stop every now and then to marvel.

My insider tips in Bosa:

• Visit Castello Malaspina – A walk of about half an hour takes you from Bosa’s old town centre up the Scalinata staircase, which is hung with roses, to Castello Malaspina. The castle was built at the beginning of the 12th century and offers a fantastic panoramic view.

Arriving in Alghero

We continue along the coast to Alghero. The lively little town, surrounded by a city wall, is a former Catalan enclave and is often referred to as Little Barcelona. You will surely love the picturesque harbour. Alghero is world-famous for its traditional red coral jewellery.

In the evening, I recommend the Alghero Sunset Sailing Aperitif Tour – a leisurely boat tour with an aperitif at sunset.

Sardinia Day 4: Beach time & Grotta di Nettuno

The morning of the fourth day of your Sardinia round trip by car can be spent relaxing on the Spiaggia di Maria Pia – an approx. 2-kilometre-long beach in Alghero with golden sand, bordered by a pine forest that provides shade.

Afterwards, you can take a boat tour or hike to the Grotta di Nettuno – an impressive stalactite cave with spectacular stalactites and stalagmites, accessible via a picturesque boat trip or an impressive staircase with 654 steps along the cliffs.

Later, you have the option of taking part in a wine tasting at the renowned Sella & Mosca winery, which I would definitely recommend if you are a wine lover.

After a short break, the journey continues towards the east coast with an overnight stay in Cala Gonone. This town on the east coast of central Sardinia is the perfect base for a boat tour to the best beaches in Sardinia the next morning!

My restaurant tip in Cala Gonone:

• Sa Cuchina piccolo listeria enoteco – Here you can enjoy delicious homemade pasta, and traditional Sardinian classics such as Culurgiones (filled Pasta with potatoes and cheese served with tomato sauce). It is a very small restaurant run by a cute couple – so you might need to wait a bit for a table.

Sardinia Day 5: Golfo di Orosei Boat Tour & San Pantaleo

Start the day with a boat trip to the most beautiful beaches, the bluest water and hidden little caves. A boat is the best choice, as most of the beaches on the east coast can only be reached from the water or after a strenuous and steep hike – especially on the way back up the cliffs.

You will see unique white beaches with dreamlike blue water, for example:

• Pools of the Venus – a perfect spot to stop the boat and go for a swim in the bluest water
• Cala dei Gabbiani – an idyllic little bay with crystal-clear water
• Cala Mariolu – with rocks for cliff jumping and also crystal-clear water
• Cala Luna – with caves at the beach which are ideal to hide from the intense sun
• Cala Goloritze – the most famous beach with its iconic rock formation

I highly recommend booking a private boat (with or without skipper) instead of booking a tour on a big ship with countless other people – It’s a whole different experience! I have linked you the exact tour we booked below!

The tours usually end in the late afternoon so make sure to pack enough water and snacks during your boat trip as there are barely any places to buy drinks or food at the beaches.

San Pantaleo Mountain Village

After a day on the water, continue your road trip to San Pantaleo. I absolutely loved this tiny village surrounded by the mountains with the cutest market square where you find little cafes and local shops with sustainable fashion. It is an absolute hidden gem in Sardinia!

Sunset and early mornings are the best time to explore the village which is why I highly recommend spending one or two nights here.

My hotel tips in San Pantaleo:

My restaurant tip in San Pantaleo: 

• Grab your morning coffee and, ideally, a shakarata (iced shaken espresso) or the decadent ciccolata calda (thick hot chocolate) at one of the cafés around the main square this is also where you find the majority of restaurants for lunch or dinner

Insider Tip:

If you happen to come to San Pantaleo during a Thursday morning, visit the Thursday artisan market with local ceramics, crafts, and delicacies – it’s a highlight in San Pantaleo.

Sardinia Day 6: La Maddalena Archipelago & Olbia

On this day of your 7-day round trip Sardinia by car, you will head towards Palau – a pretty town in the north of Sardinia. From here, you can also embark on unforgettable tours. Treat yourself to a boat or catamaran tour through the La Maddalena archipelago – one of the most beautiful island groups in the Mediterranean, with dreamy bays and turquoise-blue water. You will find a true snorkelling paradise among the more than 60 islets.
